You will be hooked on this album within the opening minute of Track 1 Rose on the Water. Javier is one amazing guitarist. I own all his CDs (And DVDs), and Texas Tango is without doubt his finest hour (Definitely when it concerns the Blues).Vargas Blues Band CDs usually have at least one Latino tune in the Santana field. This CD is 100% Blues Mastery. Rose on the Water is more in the Rock vein, but then we are taken into the Classic "Blues Pilgimage". The vocals of Jeff Espinoza are deep and soulful.Title Track "Texas Tango" could easily be called Texas Boogie. It will definitely remind you of Classic early ZZ Top (Vocals included).Scorching guitar follows."Love aint got nowhere to go" is a slow moody BB Kingish style tune that is accompanied by Background Organ."Ride baby Ride" featuring Double Trouble, is start to finish 100% Rocking headbanging boogie.Love it ! "Black Cat Boogie" is another classic and always features on the VBB live set-list.Wicked harp playing from Jeff Espinoza and female backing vocals.I have this song on Video from Montreux from about 7 years ago and the harp jam vibe was a sight to see. "1969" is another slowish soft starting song that builds in intensity. The song obviously pays homage to the hippy-flower power era, and there are nice touches of Hendrix notes in there for nostalgic purposes."Riding High" is an absolute killer.Javier really in mindblowing form here (At times you will think of Eddie Van Halen). The Keyboards ably back the guitar here. The remaining songs will bring you back down to earth with the very mellow "Thinking of you" and "Buenos Aires Blues" and the Standard Blues of "Big Boss Man" "253" and "Blood Shot". It is no wonder that the greatest Blues Backing band (Double Trouble) were quick to play with Mr Vargas. Other Blues legends have also featured on VBB CDs and at live concerts including Lonnie Brooks/Larry McCray/Sugar Blue/Chris Rea to name just a few. It will be very hard for the Vargas Blues Band to top this almost perfect recording. ---Paul Watson, amazon.com

Javier Vargas fronts the band, his musical influences have been shaped by living in Argentina and Venezuela, moving to the USA and living in Spain. Having played the guitar for most of his life firstly a Spanish Guitar moving onto electric guitar at twelve it isn’t surprising that this album is guitar driven rock that draws its influences from many musical streams including the blues.

Vargas Blues Band, From the Dark have created a true crossover sound melding and blending musical textures and tones to create a sound that is uniquely his. This is the album that showcases his stellar guitar skills with intuitive and slide guitar and lead breaks that soar and crash melodically into the support of the rhythm section. The cherries on top of this musical cake are the vocals of Gaz Pearson, as they articulate and flow around the words that wrap around the guitar creating a homogenous sound making this album stand out from the crowd.

The album opening track makes a statement from the off with Bye Bye Zombie this is a crescendo of sound punctuated with some stylish use of the wah-wah pedal in the solo’s that gets your musical ear engaged you want to hear the rest of the album. We have a change of beat and emphasis with Latino driven blues riffs on Moon Light Blues, this track cements the power of Gaz’s vocals and Javier’s guitar work and the only time the hints of his South American influences are heard.

This is an album that has tracks that have a beat and rhythm that would fit into many a radio station, coincidently both starting with ‘R’; Radioactivity and Runaway. It is his trademark slide guitar with its bluesy sound that gives this album a tone not found on energetic guitar-centric rock inspired music full of melodic power chords and searing bending of the strings with a twist of the blues added to the mix.

The cover of Palace Of the King has great backing vocals but this track has been re-hashed so many times it does not add anything to the album, From the Dark would be just as good without another variant of this perennially recorded ad-played anthem.

Roy’s Blues and Esperanto draw the album to a close and it is that combo of Vargas and Pearson that lingers on and makes this album an enjoyable listen

If you love guitar with attitude and lots of tonal texture combined with powerful vocals, from a guitarist who has played with an eclectic mix of stars including Prince, Chris Rea, Frank Marino, Junior Wells, Glen Hughes & Devon Allman on stage and in the studio; delivering music that refuses to be of-a-type, then this is an album for you. --- bluesdoodles.com

Javier Vargas, the son of Spanish emigrants to Argentina, was born in Madrid soon after his parents left Buenos Aires. When he was nine years old, the family moved back to Argentina, which is where he started playing the guitar.

His earliest influences can be seen in Argentine rock of the late 60s and early 70s, in groups such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Cream, The Rolling Stones and The Doors, and in guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and B.B. King, who still provide great inspiration for him today.

In the late 1970s, Javier took his guitar and went to the U.S.A. to study music. He lived in Nashville, Tennessee, and in Los Angeles, where he played in clubs, and also took part in recordings as a session guitar player. Every night he used to jam with American and English musicians and he met many well-known musicians such as Alvin Lee, Roy Buchanan and Cannet Heat, who also influenced his style.

In the 1980s he returned to Spain and became a member of Miguel Ríos‚ band, playing the guitar in several of his albums. He also played with La Orquesta Mondragón, and worked as a session guitar player and composer.

In 1991 he took the most important step of his career and formed his own band. All Around Blues was the first album recorded by Javier Vargas as the leader of the Vargas Blues Band.

For years, the Vargas Blues Band has been entertaining audiences throughout Europe at such major venues as Switzerland's Montreaux Jazz Festival, Germany's Pop Korn Festival, The Great British R&B Festival, and the Antwerp R& B Festival, as well as extensive touring elsewhere throughout Europe and Latin America. Carlos Santana, who has performed with Vargas in Spain and France, remarked on the Spaniard's unique talent to blend Rock, Soul, Flamenco and Latin influences. Now exploding on the shores of the US, the Vargas Blues Band gives music lovers in the states a great taste of his fusion of sounds. ---Editorial Reviews

Destacan temas como "Talking About the Blues", "You Got Me", "Passion Blues", o "Mojo Protection".

Have always enjoyed J Vargas's work; though his previous releases have usually been wildly uneven in reference to song quality, I find this to be one of his more consistent efforts ( in addition to "Feedback"- my favorite cd.)

At turns taking the lead stylistically from Santana, SR Vaughan, Chicago blues, synthesized flamenco, and all out late 60's psychedelia, Mr. Vargas turns up the Fender Twin and sets his Strat for "stun". If anything, the man can pack quite the sizzle when he lets his distortion and wah-wah pedals do the talking for him. Doesn't hurt that he knows how to slow it down too-

Though the singing can be a bit over the top at times, if you are a fan of the aforementioned influences and like a Latino kick, you most likely will not be disappointed. And if this one turns you on, look for "Feedback" -that one is also well worth hunting down.

--- lahiguera.net

Javier Vargas, creator of the Vargas Blues Band was born in Madrid in 1955 but his family moved to Argentina when he was barely six years. With ten years old his father gave him his first guitar and started guitar lessons and music theory, but soon tired of these classes and continued to learn on their own.His beginnings were influenced by the blues, rhythm fashionable at the time.

In 1971 he went to Venezuela, although not long in leaving the U.S., where I wanted to really learn the true masters of the blues and learn about new trends. His first contact in North America led him to Tennessee, where he drank from the fountains of the country and worked with the Mad Covers Band, playing covers of famous bands. Her next step was to go to Los Angeles where he rubbed elbows with many established stars such as Van Halen. In 1977 he returned to Spain. At its inception collaborated with Miguel Ríos, Joaquín Sabina and Manolo Tena, who made the disc with Spanish blood. Along with these collaborations, created the band called Vargas Blues Band, with a bass and a drummer, and turned to go Spain to become known.

In 1991 he published his first album, All Around Blues, with the collaboration of Elena Figueroa, among other distinguished friends. In 1992 publishes Madrid-Memphis, with whom he won a notable success in Spain and sold a considerable number of copies. --- whoisthemonk.wordpress.com
