Road Rockers is a scorcher taped 95 percent live-on-the-floor over two days with very few overdubs. It's an honest recording, in the same way that you could always count on Janis Joplin to exude sincerity. "This Is My Life" provides the album's highlight, a passionate statement on individualism -- complete with gut-churning guitar solo -- that makes you wish it was your life too. The disc includes both an acoustic and an electric rendition of Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited." While it's the latter that appears on the soundtrack album for Bruce McDonald's film Highway 61, the acoustic version allows the subtleties and full-range of Chiarelli's expressive vocal instrument to shine. ---Roch Parisien, AllMusic Review

The music we call the blues was born of pain and suffering. The performance of this exquisite ache is intended for spiritual release, even if physical freedom is unavailable. Nowhere is this understood better than in Louisiana’s Angola Prison, a maximum-security prison on a property the size of Manhattan that holds 5,000 inmates convicted of the worst of crimes and serving the longest of sentences.

It was once known as “the Bloodiest Prison in America” for its past history of violence. It’s the grim place where two musically minded and celebrated Torontonians, blueswoman Rita Chiarelli and filmmaker Bruce McDonald, head for the social and sonic adventure that is Music from the Big House. Chiarelli lends her three-octave voice and deep compassion to a collection of murderers and rapists whose many years behind bars have made them sorrowful and eager for redemption. The liberating power of the blues — and also a little country and R&B — is seen in the smiles and swaying of the inmates, none of whom would make it past the first audition of American Idol.

This isn’t about finding prodigies behind bars. It’s also not about gawking at criminals as if they were zoo animals. Not until the credits roll do we find out what crimes these men have committed. Music from the Big House is about exploring the redemptive power of music. Chiarelli provides insights into her own hard life, growing up as the daughter of poor Italian immigrants struggling in steeltown Hamilton. Music was her liberation, as it is for these men, even though many of them will never see freedom: “Here, when they say life, they mean life,” one of them says.

In less sincere hands, the concept might seem exploitive or too reminiscent of Johnny Cash’s famous prison concerts. This is utterly sincere, and there is lasting value in getting violent men to turn their energies to peaceful expression: “When you’re singing, you’re not angry,” Chiarelli says. ---Peter Howell, thestar.com

Rita Chiarelli stands firmly behind her bid as a vocalist. Joining her for "Breakfast at Midnight" was a pleasant yet, I found, "low-cal" musical repast. Eleven cuts totaling 47:50 span a wide yard, covering obviously blues-flavored tunes, light rock, a bit of the folky, and even country flavors. There is no lack of fine musicianship; tasty licks and "tones of the learned" boast guitarist Colin Linden's journeyman style, and the rest of the players are very capable assets as well.

Rita is the songwriter, credited with the lyrics and music for all the works, a well-arranged batch not meant, however, for the "hot-blooded." "Woman in Blue" was a good choice to top the disc, (as it feints the nastiness that registers excitement to my ears at first); it comes on strongly. It does continue with a certain fervor; I simply prefer my milk with the cream still in the bottle, and my giblets fried instead of boiled. Familiar trademark phrases and chord patterns abound. "Horse of a Different Color" borrows the hook phrase from Bonnie Rice's "Mustang Sally," (a song very reminiscent of my work with Wilson Pickett- "ride, Sally, ride!") but produces a smooth, new, and artistic product. Cut 3, "Never Been Loved Before" is a light rumba laced with accordion, where Rita is joined in a singing duet with a male voice that, in my opinion, is a poor match for blend; a distraction in an otherwise nice tune. In "Memphis Has Got the Blues," I'm hit with a catchy musical phrasing...... a spin derived from Floyd Cramer's "Last Date" that is not quite covert enough for these old ears. To summarize, the songs are good, but not terribly innovative; warm, but not on fire.

There is no doubt that Rita Chiarelli is a gifted singer and has golden lungs. I found her very effective in at least 3 different styles, which is a tribute to Rita's abilities, but not necessarily an asset in the effectiveness of the CD as a work. The album does leave me with a strong impression that if used to it's fullest, the lady and the voice COULD be a part of a simply "knock-out" sound. As for the promo info I received putting her on the same shelf as Bonnie Raitt........... well, that just may be a bit of an exaggeration, but if anyone deserves a nice word, it's Rita. --- Bobby Manriquez, mnblues.com

Hamilton-born blues belter Rita Chiarelli is considered one of the few queens of the Canadian blues scene. 1994's Just Gettin' Started is a solid collection of frills-free blues-rock featuring some of the scene's top players, including hornsman Pat Carey, guitarist Colin Linden, and the members of Prairie Oyster. Chiarelli roars through familiar themes of heartbreak and revenge on these tracks, refusing to smooth out the rough edges and giving an even grittier feel to the low-budget recording. Most of the songs are more barroom rock than straight-up blues, yet while the passion is there, the songwriting really isn't. Singing about dust storms and Tupelo, Mississippi, is a bit rich when you're cutting your record in downtown Toronto. ---Matt Galloway

Rita Chiarelli is one of the most exciting new singers in Canada. Her unique blend of rock and blues has been compared favorably to Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge, and Susan Tedeschi. In 2000, she was named the "top blues singer" at Canada's Maple Leaf Awards. The world's discovery of Chiarelli comes after years of her paying dues. Singing with Hamilton, Ontario-based group Tempest at the age of 15, she toured throughout North America with a nine-piece R&B band, Battleaxe, after graduating from high school. Chiarelli continued to sharpen her chops as a member of Toronto-based rockabilly pioneer Ronnie Hawkins' group. After a year, however, she moved to Italy, where she worked as a studio vocalist for six years. Returning to Canada in the late '80s, Chiarelli had her first success when her tune "Have You Seen My Shoes?," which was featured in the film Roadkill. Releasing her debut album, Road Rocket, in 1992, she took things a step further with her second effort, Just Gettin' Started, three years later. Produced by Jane Siberry-producer John Switzer, the album showcased Chiarelli's hook-laden songwriting, with all but one song -- a cover of Elvis Presley's "Love Me" -- original. Long John Baldry covered Chiarelli's song, "Midnight in Berlin," on his 1996 album Right to Sing the Blues. Breakfast at Midnight, released in 2001, includes such guests as ex-Band keyboardist Richard Bell and guitarist Colin Linden. ---Craig Harris, Rovi
