Put On Your Red Dress Baby is a brand new 2018 CD by Teeny Tucker. It is soulful, dynamic, laced with edgy humor, and emotional songwriting. It tells stories of broken love and internal resolve. Twists, and turns are the order of the day along with some fun interjections for good measure. It’s Teeny at her very best!

If you like to dance, there’s plenty here for you. You may be reminded of fun times of past dance floor flourishes along with a reminder of a “call and response” to Tommy Tucker’s (Teeny’s Dad) 1964 classic song, “Hi Heel Sneakers” honoring its recent induction into The Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis, Tennessee.

Teeny personally accepted the HOF honors and during her acceptance speech, she recalled her most recent visit to her father’s gravesite. As she cleaned the mud from his grave, Teeny was reminded of the haunting words from Blind Lemon Jefferson’s “One Kind Favor” which is included in this set.

For the most part, Put On Your Red Dress Baby encompasses emotional needs which beg to be heard, loved and understood. Dysfunctionalities, heartbreak, conflicts, and disagreements with people you love are all fair game for the inspiration for blues interpretations.

There is even a song which describes divine intervention from listening to that inner voice which comes from a prayer made on your knees in a sacred place, with your head bowed, seeking an answer to a difficult situation.

Also on this CD, you will hear a story which inspired a young boy to fall in love with the blues when he heard the guitar styling of B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix. That little boy (Robert Hughes) is playing all of the guitar leads on Put On Your Red Dress Baby.

Teeny is thrilled to share the music which originated from the poorest people in the richest place in the world. ---bluesfestivalguide.com

Upon checking out the title, along with the track list, which includes song titles such as “Voodoo Woman”, “Voodoo Voodoo”, “It’s Your Voodoo Working” , and “Love Spell”, one might be able to identify the recurring theme of Teeny Tucker's latest album, if hard-pressed. That being said, Teeny Tucker doesn’t need voodoo to get anyone to love this recording, Voodoo To Do You! She’s got it covered with powerful vocals, down-home blues, choice song selections and a great band which includes guitarist Robert Hughes, bassist Robert Blackburn, drummer Darrell Jumper, David Gastel on harmonica and keyboards.

Tucker kicks this thirteen track album off with a fantastic cover of Koko Taylor’s “Voodoo Woman”. It’s fast paced Blues, buttered on one side with her cool raspy vocals, and on the other side, with Hughes’ killer electric riffs. Linda Dachtyl, sitting in on this one with her B3, adds a cohesive bonding that nicely pulls the song together. Then without skipping a beat, the intro to Howlin’ Wolf’s “Commit a Crime” gently rolls in. Hughes scores big points on this one as he nicely sets the song in motion. Introducing new lyrics, Tucker tackles this one from a woman’s point of view. “Tough Lover” is another cover, with a little modification. This one isn’t your Etta James’ version. Tucker takes the original and slows it down a bit, which I think is a great decision. Interestingly, as the tempo increases, Hughes briefly steers the song from Blues to Rockabilly before bringing it back home again.

One of my favorite tracks on the album is Tucker’s rendition of “Death Don’t Have No Mercy”, originally by Gary Davis, and covered later by the Grateful Dead. I love the guitar licks Hughes lays down on this dark and sullen song. I can feel the emotion pouring off his guitar strings as he plays. This is probably the coolest song on the album.

Tucker must have had her mojo working double time when she got the idea for the closer song, “Sun Room”. This upbeat original, about the history and spirit of the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, coincidentally was recorded at the Sun Studios. When this song plays, I feel momentarily transported to the studio itself. Tucker makes it easy to envision the iconic building at 706 Union Avenue, with her crafted lyrics. ---Phillip Smith, phillycheezeblues.blogspot.com

Blues vocalist Teeny Tucker is carving out a good career, following in the footsteps of her rhythm & blues singing father Tommy Tucker. This third album shows she's maturing rapidly, although frankly, she's always had spunk and drive enough to rise above garden-variety vocalists in this genre. With the poise, guts, and no-nonsense voice similar to Etta James, Tucker and songwriting partner/guitarist Robert Hughes have created this program of original material that speaks to both the electric or urban tradition with modified and updated lyrics based in contemporary issues. There's a personalized approach where Tucker speaks about the hard life in songs during brisk rockers "I Live Alone," and the autobiographical "Make Room for Teeny" written by Pam and Lee Durley, where the singer claims she lives the "one hundred and fifty proof blues." The swing shuffle of "Old Man Magnet" might be a sign of current-day fashionistas having the provocative upper hand, while the title track sports a full vocal choir with the solid-sending voice of Tucker leading the charge. Slower tunes really emphasize how she's influenced by Etta James, but also that the acoustic side of blues is important to her, as heard during "John Cephas," where she rattles off names of past backporch, unplugged heroes such as Cephas, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Boy Fuller, Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Blake, Tampa Red, and Skip James. The addition of organist Linda Dachtyl on three tracks doesn't hurt, either. Teeny Tucker is among a growing number of female blues belters taking different paths to stardom or wider recognition, but she's one of the very best, as proven on this fine recording that most blues lovers should fully appreciate. ---Michael G.
