I've been waiting 3 years to see how Anni Piper was going to follow up her debut CD "Jailbait". Well, "Texas Hold 'Em" was certainly worth the wait! It's immediately clear that Piper has evolved on all levels with this release, which is no mean feat given the award winning strength of "Jailbait". Anni's song writing is inspired & insightful, complimented by some stellar performances by the band.

Anni takes the listener on a journey through the blues; from the Delta inspired feel of "Mystery of Love" to the Rockabilly grooves of "Texas Hold 'Em", the Country-esque "Love's Truly Blind" to the Gypsy-fuelled "Playing Your Bottom Line" (which features some inspiring interplay between the Fiddle & Resonator guitar!). Anni even works a Sesame Street feel into the cleverly penned "Little Redhead" with outstanding results. This CD also includes some insight into Anni’s inspirations with the inclusion of 4 covers: “Blues Before Sunrise”, “Watchdog”, SRV’s “Empty Arms” – & my favourite being her take on “The More I Keep on Losin” (the Jeff Turmes penned Janiva Magness tune) which Anni makes her own with an exceptional vocal performance.

Overall “Texas Hold ‘Em” is, simply put, a sensational CD. The songs are well written, the band grooves, and Piper’s vocals are fantastic. (I felt particularly moved by the emotion-wrought performances of “Untrue” & “Love’s Truly Blind”) My advice? Anni & co-writer Al VanderLinden have concocted a special brew that is poured straight into the soul via the performance of each member of her band. With Anni's solid bass grooves laying the foundation the guys deliver inspired blues performances. Australian blues sensation Anni Piper's sultry vocals have attracted significant overseas interest and she signed with USA label Blues Leaf Records in 2008. The 'Blues Leaf' catalogue includes releases by many successful American performers including the award-winning Janiva Magness. Anni's USA debut, titled 'Two's Company' was released in January 2009 and hit #1 on the Australian Roots music charts.

Anni Piper remembers the moment she first heard the blues. "It was Paul Butterfield Blues Band playing Born in Chicago - I knew straight away this was the direction I was heading," she says. She is one of the young, exciting new blues players emerging in Australia, winner of Best New Talent at the Australian Blues Music Awards in 2005. Anni quotes Stevie Ray Vaughan as a huge influence on her playing, and the influence of Texas blues is evident on her debut. Her instrument is the bass guitar, ("preferring to lay down a groove rather than scream out a solo"). She is one of the premier Australian blues songwriters, able to capture the economy of language and wit of the blues in her lyrics.

Anni has won several major awards in the time her album has been available. 2005 Australian Blues Music Award winner for Best New Talent, Anni Piper introduces her music to the rest of the world with her first Blues Leaf release “Two’s Company”, a compilation from her two Australian releases. Select cuts were remastered to showcase her talent as a vocalist, bass player, and songwriter, as ten of the twelve cuts are originals.

This CD is versatile to which Piper together with her band shines with well-chosen songs and texts. But the most attractive on this CD is Piper’s voice, she can get to the bone managed to get by her deep voice, and later she sounds more poppy as “Watchdog “. In this Piper sounds equally wonderful. If it sounds on the title track as Bonnie Bramlett in the 70s.”
