Many blues artists are taking their music in a more contemporary-friendly direction, nearly devoid of the scholarly dedication to their deepest heritage seen in past decades. On the other hand, “Studebaker” John Grimaldi is happy going the opposite way. Continuing a debt of gratitude to his beloved, gravel ‘n grit Chicago street-corner boogie, John digs even deeper into the primordial blues ooze for Kingsville Jukin’.

Studebaker John’s specialty is basically an urbanized, rough-necked bastardization of Mississippi Hill Country blues, set to an ice-cool, backstreet attitude. John and the boys are well-versed in big city blues of all varieties, like the Jimmy Reed shuffle of “When They Played The Real Blues.” However, the cuts with real teeth are the crude slices of frayed-speaker wreckage, like “She’s Alright,” and “I Am The Houserocker,” both of which could have been plucked from some lost, roaring Hound Dog Taylor session over a case of Schlitz. The utilization of gloriously analog relics like 1950’s RCA ribbon mics and Ampex tube tape recorders ensures authenticity.

Other standouts like “Wicked Soul” are instantly trance-like, with an impulsive snare drum monotony opening up a potentially endless jam; a few simple notes inducing the listener’s most primitive shivers of nirvana.

There is perhaps no better champion of the classic, rolling-stoned Maxwell Street beat. Studebaker John shuns the 12-bar norm for one heck of a dirt-under-the-nails good time. --- Mark Uricheck, elmoremagazine.com

John Grimaldi, better known by his stage name Studebaker John is an American blues guitarist and harmonica player. He is a practitioner of the Chicago blues style. Studebaker John's father was an amateur musician, and he played early in life at the Maxwell Street flea market. Grimaldi began playing harmonica at age seven. In the 1970s he put together his band, the Hawks, and worked as a construction worker while recording and performing on the side. He recorded extensively for Blind Pig Records in the 1990s. Grimaldi counts Hound Dog Taylor as the reason he began playing slide guitar.

Studebaker John was born in an Italian-American section of Chicago and started playing harmonica at age 7. Under the spell of music he heard on Maxwell Street, Chicago’s famed blues melting pot, Grimaldi began performing as Studebaker John and the Hawks in the ‘70s. The band name referenced the Studebaker Hawk, a car Grimaldi still owns today, and was also intended as a tribute to his friend, J.B. Hutto and the Hawks. John began playing guitar after a life-changing experience of seeing Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers perform. After playing at various Chicago clubs, John records his first record, Straight No Chaser, released on Retread Records. His second recording, Rocking the Blues, is released in 1985 on Avanti Records. John continues to work clubs and concerts in Chicago and the mid-west region. As a songwriter and musician, Studebaker John has emerged as a major creative force in the world of the blues today. Ahead of the pack, with vision and foresight, creating a new standard and landscape for this music’s future with John at the wheel, the future is now! Studebaker John & The Hawks new release was the album ‘Eternity’s Descent’ (2016). --blues.gr

Studebaker John has always been one of the most talented and versatile artists in the blues world. He's equally good at slide guitar and harp. And his playing has always been some of the most intense that I've ever heard. He doesn't disappoint with this effort. He's dropped the name the Hawks here following his name, but this is the same tight little rhythm section that he's had on his last few albums. But this cd sounds miles better to me than his last outing Howl With The Wolf. It has the live feel of someone who just came off tour and has retained that spontanious energy of a live concert. The solos here, both slide and harp, are simply amazing! In my opinion tha best he's ever done. Some great standout songs here include the slide happy "Hard Place And The Ground". The magnificent "If I Had A Nickel" which features some of the fattest and nastiest harp that he's ever done. But perhaps the standout song for some here will be the 8 minute album closer "Cold Chills", which has some of the catchiest chord changes that I've heard in a long time. What's remarkable about this album is that Studebaker John said this whole thing came about by accident.

Studebaker and the band went into the studio to back a popular blues musician, who he said would remain nameless. But as it turned out this artist got drunk at a local pub and never showed up for the recording session. Since they were already in there, Studebaker decided to use the studio time himself in one marathon live-in-studio recording session for this album. After just coming off a month long UK tour and performing these songs on the road, everything here was ripe for the picking. What is maybe just as remarkable is these songs have been ready for over 2 years, but he had trouble with the music industry and unbelievably parted ways with Evidence Records. Now on a small independent label, this cd probably won't be promoted like it should. It's too bad. I've got all of his cd's, and i think this is his stongest to date. If your a fan, roll the dice and see for yourselves. I don't think you'll be disappointed. This is a real blues gem! --- Patrick Earley, amazon.com

Outside Lookin' In finds Studebaker John perfecting his overdriven, propulsive Chicago blues. His originals may not always be memorable, but they're ... Full Descriptionsturdy vehicles for his hard-driving harmonica and gutsy guitar. Studebaker hasn't changed his style at all -- essentially, this is the same album he's delivered before, and he made several others like it afterward -- but this is the one that features his best playing. --- Thom Owens, Rovi
