As a surprise for his army of fans, Seasick Steve has released a brand new album which is available digitally now! Entitled ‘Blues in Mono’, the album cover tells you exactly what to expect from the album. Just one man, his voice, his acoustic guitar and one microphone.

‘Blues in Mono’ is a timeless tribute to traditional, acoustic country blues recorded with a microphone from the 1940s, with Seasick Steve performing the songs solo, direct to an old tape machine. This is an album that fans have been crying out for, for years.

‘Blues in Mono’ finds Seasick Steve giving some of his finest performances to deliver a fresh, stripped down blues album that offers the perfect antidote for the troubled times in which we live. Steve has curated a selection of songs to cover, from his favourite artists such as Willie Dixon, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Charlie Patton and Mississippi Fred McDowell.

The album also features 4 new Seasick Steve tracks including the lead track Well, Well, Well. ---bluestownmusic.nl

John Lee Hooker built a long, rich career out of writing the same song over and over again for close to 50 years. That's not to say Hooker wasn't a great songwriter, as he most certainly was, but for him the most important thing wasn't the melody or the lyrics, but the boogie, the ceaseless forward rhythm that drove his music with an unholy force and was the foundation of nearly all his great songs. Seasick Steve is no John Lee Hooker, but he does share Hooker's true devotion to the deep and sinewy groove, an element that's run strong through Steve's music since he belatedly launched his recording career in 2006, and his albums have been cut from similar musical cloth, with the Seasick One wailing hard on a buzzy slide guitar while his rhythm section stomps behind him like the beat owes them money.

2015's Sonic Soul Surfer doesn't break a lot of new ground for Seasick Steve (the artist formerly known as Steve Wold); it's dominated by butt-shaking groovers like "Roy's Gang," "Sonic Soul Boogie," and "Barracuda '68," where Steve cranks his amp and the band turns up the heat, while smoky late-night numbers like "We Be Moving" and "Your Name," and atmospheric acoustic tunes such as "In Peaceful Dreams" and "Heart Full of Scars" give the album variety and texture. When Steve hits fourth gear and picks up a good head of steam, his indefatigable stomp is a joy to behold, and he rocks blissfully hard for a man eligible for Social Security. However, Sonic Soul Surfer is an album that doesn't need to be 57-minutes long, and the final third features more than one moment where the record feels like it should coast to a close, only for another slow number to jump up and keep the show rolling. When Seasick Steve is laying out a fiery groove, Sonic Soul Surfer more than delivers the goods, but he should remember than John Lee Hooker didn't cut too many double albums in his day for a good reason -- you can only boogie for so long in one go, and when you run low on gas, it's not entertaining for anyone involved. ---Mark Deming, AllMusic Review

Given he has been earning a solid living as a session musician and producer since 1973, Seasick Steve’s ornery-old-hobo shtick can be a little hard to take, but by God it has worked. This 75-year-old is about to fill Wembley Arena with nothing more than his three-stringed guitar and throaty tales of hopping freight trains. Keepin’ The Horse Between Me And The Ground is the eighth album by Seasick Steve — aka Stephen Wold — and it strays out of his usual raw blues patch while maintaining the unadorned simplicity that is at the heart of his appeal. --- thetimes.co.uk

Lovable blues troubadour Seasick Steve has been called into question just lately due to an unauthorised biography claiming that his life was nowhere near as rough as he made out and the bluesman we know is simply an invented character. The truth likely lies somewhere in the middle ground, but in amongst all this the man himself has dropped his latest album on the anniversary of his Jools Holland performance that propelled him into stardom. By now we all know what to expect from a Seasick Steve album; rough and ready blues, tales of a misspent life on the road, played on absurdly makeshift instruments. Naturally this is all part of his charm but there are moments where the whole affair feels tired.

Keepin’ The Horse is a curious addition to his discography for various reasons. It’s his first double album, a notoriously risky move in music, and it comes just a year after his previous album Sonic Soul Surfer. The majority of the songs are acoustic ballads including the notable addition of a country bluegrass jam (‘Grass is Greener’), a cover (‘Everybody’s Talkin’ At Me’), a duet in the form of album closer ‘I’m So Lonesome’ and a reworking of his classic track ‘Walkin’ Man’ that is no different from the original. Whilst there are some notable moments that will one day find themselves on his greatest hits there is nowhere near enough quality content here to justify a double album. The album is more suited to hardcore fans and pales in comparison to his earlier work. ---James Fenney, belwoodmusic.com

Yes, they really do still make albums like this in the 21st century. Steve Wold, otherwise known as Seasick Steve, released his second album, Dog House Music in 2007, his first purely solo effort; he had previously released an album entitled Cheap several years earlier for which he shared the credit with Swedish band the Level Devils. Dog House Music is like a really old John Lee Hooker or Muddy Waters album, or maybe something even less commercial as Steve strums his guitar and sings along, his voice sounding drowned in bourbon, and occasionally a song such as "Fallen off a Rock" crashes to life, literally, with the guitar no longer picking out a sorrowful blues lick but strumming wildly and the drums smashing away in the foreground played by two members of his family, HJ Wold and PM Wold. Apart from that however, the entire album is played by Steve, recorded in what sounded like one take, when he might have been sitting in a leaky shack by the Mississippi, almost every track given a short introduction almost as if to explain to a personal audience what the forthcoming song is about and why it is important. The album begins with the very short (just over one minute) track, "Yellow Dog" which sounds like it was been recorded at the bottom of a well, the acoustics are so terrible. When the final track, "I'm Gone," finishes, there is a small gap which is followed by Steve reciting a real shaggy dog story, over five minutes long, no music, just Steve rambling about being arrested and after spending six months in jail, looking for his runaway dog; this eventually runs into another sad blues song (about a dog). Not sure why anybody would want to listen to this story more than once. Even the album cover looks like it was designed and drawn by a six-year-old, but that simply adds to the unpolished and underproduced nature of the work, which is a credit, not a fault. ---Sharon Mawer, Rovi

There you go, Hubcap Music. At least you know where you are with Steve who – on his sixth album in nine years since he became an overnight success in his early 60s – sticks with the grizzly, scuffed-up blues that made him such a hit with the purists. It's the same unspoilt lo-fi approach that's attracted starry names like Jack White and John Paul Jones to play on this album, and the same one that makes you not even notice they're there.

The downside to raw appeal is it becomes an end in itself, and here the songwriting suffers. Hubcap Music has a surfeit of barrelling blues tracks that feel as if they've been made a million times over, from the heads-down redneck boogie of Down On The Farm and Self Sufficient Man to the Exile On Main Street-era Stonesy rifferama of Freedom Road. And the dumb funk of Keep On Keepin' On has pub band written all over it.

But then the delicate, wistful Purple Shadows pops up along with the Muscle Shoals soul of Coast Is Clear, and Steve's a different proposition altogether. Perhaps you can teach an old dog new tricks after all. --- Matthew Horton, virginmedia.com
