Flávio Guimarães iniciou seus estudos na harmônica cromática em 1982, tendo Maurício Einhorn como mestre. Algum tempo depois, sua paixão pelo blues o fez voltar-se para a harmônica diatônica.

No final de 1985, formou sua primeira banda, Blues Etílicos.

Em 88, foi para Chicago ter aulas com Sugar Blue e Howard Levy. De volta ao Brasil, começou a transmitir seus conhecimentos a uma legião de alunos através de seus cursos e workshops. Pouco depois, produziu a primeira “vídeo aula” direcionada ao tema no país.

A harmônica cromática, apelidada no Brasil de “gaita de chave”, é em geral mais utilizada no jazz, bossa nova, choro, música erudita. Ela possui timbre e características próprias que a diferem bastante da harmônica diatônica, mais utilizada no blues e no rock. A “gaita diatônica” era um instrumento praticamente desconhecido dentro do cenário da música brasileira até o aparecimento de Flávio Guimarães, indiscutivelmente o grande pioneiro na profissionalização desse instrumento no país. O ineditismo de seu trabalho fez com que se tornasse um instrumentista requisitado para dezenas de gravações de discos, trilhas para novelas e séries de TV.

O Blues Etílicos alcança grande destaque nos anos 90, com músicas nas rádios e programas especiais na TV Cultura, Manchete e MTV. Graças a Flávio, a harmônica diatônica se populariza no Brasil e uma nova geração de músicos adere ao instrumento.

Em 1999, Flávio criou o Encontro Internacional da Harmônica, principal evento temático do gênero na América do Sul, realizado por treze anos seguidos na cidade de São Paulo, no Sesc Pompéia. A partir de 2004, passou a dividir a produção do evento com o parceiro e também gaitista Thiago Cerveira.

Ao longo dos anos seguintes, Guimarães estabeleceu um intercâmbio constante com alguns dos maiores nomes da harmônica mundial, como Charlie Musselwhite, Rick Estrin, Joe Filisko, Gary Smith, Mark Hummel, Mitch Kashmar, Steve Guyger, Sugar Blue e Howard Levy, músicos com quem teve a oportunidade de realizar turnês e dividir o palco.

Flávio vem atuando como produtor artístico e curador de diversos festivais, destacando-se o Festival do Porto, evento que faz parte de reestruturação da região portuária do Rio de Janeiro.

Em 2015, participou quatro vezes como convidado especial do Quarteto Onze e Meia, do Programa do Jô. ---flavioguimaraes.com.br

He started his musical career around 1985. In 1986, he formed the group Blues Etílicos, with Greg Wilson (vocals and guitar), Otávio Rocha (guitar), Gil Eduardo (drums) and Cláudio Bedran (bass). With the group, Guimarães did many show around Brazil and world and recorded several albums.

In 1988, Guimarães travelled to Chicago, where he played with many American musician, including the harmonicist Sugar Blue. One year later, he opened Festival de Blues, in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil, playing with Buddy Guy. In that same year, he also opened shows for John Lee Hooker and John Mayall, during Free Jazz Festival. In the following years, Guimarães played in the most important festival in Brazil, such as Blues Fest, Rock in Rio II and Nescafé in Blues. During this period, he also played with many famous Brazilian artists, like Ed Motta, Roberto Frejat and Paulo Moura. He played with internacional artists too, such as Midnight Blues Band.

Since 1990, when Bizz magazine indicated Guimarães as one of the best hamonicists of Brazil, he has participated of many hamonica players meetings. In fact, Guimarães became famous between Brazilian harmonicists because he was the first one to play diatonic harmonicas in that country, introducing new possibilities of timbre to the music of his nation. In 1998, he participated of Harmonica's Night, with Carey Bell and Peter Madcat. In this same period, with a new band, he opened show for B. B. King, in Via Funchal, Brazil. He, with Tavares da Gaita, was considered one of the most important attractions in the history of Rec-Beat festival, in Recife, Brazil.

Along his career, Guimarães recorded many album. His first solo album was Little blues, in 1995. ---bmansbluesreport.com

The main harp player from Brazil, Flavio is a very interesting blues player, with lots of feeling and a good sense of when to play and when not to play (a rare feature of any instrumentalist !) This album has one track dedicated to William Clarke, and the influence cannot be denied, especially on jumpy 3rd position tunes like"Blowin' the family jewels". He has gone beyond that though and the more unusual tracks like the funky instrumental "Berimbau Nao E Gaita" feature really nice playing.
