Pete Cornelius grew up as far away from the Delta heartland as is almost humanely possible. He’s never picked cotton, never hitched a ride on a freight train, nor traded with the Devil. Not knowingly, anyway. Yet the 29-year-old Tasmanian is one of the most experienced young bluesman in the country, with more live shows and festival appearances, album releases and awards under his belt than most performers twice his age.

At 15, ‘Pete Cornelius & The DeVilles’ were formed, going on to perform at all the major festivals around Australia, and were invited back to most of them on numerous occasions. Releasing a number of albums including Live @ Narooma, Gotta’ Live, Creatures of The Night, Suburban Hell and Live at The Lakes, they toured Australia numerous times and headed stateside in 2003. Pete Cornelius & the DeVilles est 1999, have released 7 full length albums, toured relentlessly, both national & international.

The DeVilles have gone through a few different phases in the past 11 years. Originally a hard hitting Texas blues band, playing tunes from the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. But have now settled into a new groove. Pete Cornelius wrote most of the songs on the album and does all the vocals. They are good songs for the most part and not all rockers. “Billfish Bay” is a thoughtful piece with picked guitar and slide, and in praise of fishing, in the bay of the title. “Running in the Red”, by contrast is a crunchy guitar piece with a hook, about a 57′ – Chevvie or Holden we are not told! “Youth in Asia” is a slow, overdrive 12 bar. More of a contrast is “Asher’s Room”, low instrumental with Cornelius’ overdubbed piano adding simple big chords behind a mournful minor keyed progression on guitar that slowly builds to a climax.

“Rock n Roll” is a funky blues about the usual blues subjects, money women and jobs. “Cherry Bomb” is a shuffle that drives and has a neat variation on the usual 3 chord form, with a nod towards Texas. “Stairway to Hell” keeps the Texas style and continues the driving theme. “Goin’ Down” is a showcase for Cornelius’ slide playing over a riff reminiscent of Clapton’s Crossroads. “Albatross” is probably a homage and stays close to the Peter Green original, and is, naturally, beautiful. --- blues.nz

At 29, Pete Cornelius is possibly Australia’s youngest veteran of the blues scene. He released his first album at 13 and has worked tirelessly in the studio and on the road ever since. Pete Cornelius & The DeVilles continue as the gun guitarist’s predominantly ‘blues’ band. (2004’s Creatures Of The Night remains one of my all time favourite driving albums.) His band on Groundswell, however, heard on last year’s Tumbleweed, was purpose-built for Cornelius’ cross-genre work.

This time all guitar, bass and drums were recorded live to deliver a big tasty slab of blues, soul, funk and rocking country across 11 tracks. Opener ‘Drinking The Blues’ is classic Cornelius with a side order of horns and piano. Then he really gets his git-tar on for a fine version of Rev. Al Green’s ‘Love And Happiness’. More heroes are covered including Otis Rush (‘Right Place, Wrong Time’), Tom Waits (‘Cold Water’) and Ray LaMontagne. His take on the latter’s ‘Repo Man’ is an infectious ripper. A sassy nod to Freddie King serves up an irresistibly crooked rhythm-play on ‘Woman Across The River’. But Cornelius’ own eclectic set of songs prove just how naturally soulful and versatile he is. Written and tenderly sung for his baby girl, ‘Goodnight My Love’ is right up there with ‘Isn’t She Lovely’ or ‘Little Ray of Sunshine’. Cornelius was inspired to write ‘Talkin’ Bout New Orleans’ after “jamming with a few cats” from The Big Easy, despite not getting to the city in person. Well, maybe he was switched at birth ‘cause the track is soooo bona fide, you can almost smell the crawfish cooking. If the Tasmanian ever returns to visit N’awlins, he can take a place right up front in the second line. Hell, he could just start up a parade of his own! --- Chris Lambie, rhythms.com.au
