"Bloodstains On The Wall." This world we live in is rapidly changing where lives or a life seem to be be worth very little. But, all life and all lives have meaning. Black, White, Red, Yellow or whichever color you may be.....all lives matter. Too much blood is being spilled on our streets. "Bloodstains On The Wall", is a solid set of songs performed by some great musicians. --cdbaby.com

If you have ever listened to the blues as played by the iconic Muddy Waters, then you will be amazed at the similarities to the vocals of his son, Big Bill Morganfield. Not only does he possess that rootsy, robust baritone delivery, but his slide and guitar are also front and center on his latest set for Black Shuck Records, “Bloodstains On The Wall.”

There are four originals along with eight covers that are comprised of some deep, borne-of-the-Delta blues, some Chess-styled offerings, and some good-time jump-blues, too. Bill brought in an A-;list of special guests on this one, too, to go along with his Mofo Party Band. The guests include guitarists Bob Margolin, Chuck Cotton, Colin James, and Eddie Taylor, Jr., with Mookie Brill on bass, Doc Malone and Steve Guyger on harp, Augie Meyers on piano, and Jim Horn on sax.

Leading off is Big Bill’s brooding, echo-laden take on the Excello chestnut, “like a bird without its feathers, I’m Lost Without Your Love.” The fellows change gears for the next cut, the rompin’, stompin’ Chicago-styled “I Don’t Know Why,” with Steve on harp and Steady Rollin’ Bob on guitar. Bill keeps that rollicking mojo workin’ with his original, partly spoken-word tune to remind us to “Help Someone–you might need help yourself one day!” And, he covers Jimmy McCracklin’s humorous tale of swagger and braggadocio, “if you see me in a bear fight, don’t help me, Help The Bear!”

Our favorites were polar opposites of each other. Bill pays a solemn, slide-heavy tribute to his loving, late mother on “When You Lose Someone You Love.” Bill has also had the good fortune to have been asked to compose music for the Fox TV series, “Shots Fired,” and included herein is the bonus track that closes the set. It’s a Delta blues-meets-hip hop cut entitled “Hold Me Baby,” produced by Da Honorable C-Note. It fuses the blues with an urban urgency, intended to reach out to established fans and the younger listeners as well.

Muddy always wanted someone to “carry this bidness on” after he passed. Big Bill won the Handy Award (now the Blues Music Award) in 2000 for Best New Artist, and continues to carry on his Pop’s legacy and forge new fans as well, thru excellent sets such as “Bloodstains On The Wall.” Until next time….Sheryl and Don Crow, The Nashville Blues Society. ---donandsherylsbluesblog.wordpress.com

This CD by Big Bill Morganfield is appropriately named, Blues With A Mood. He states in the liner notes that he "… wanted to put together a set of tunes ... which stay close to the musical genre of Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, and several other of my musical heroes." Of the 11 tunes on this disc, 7 were penned by Big Bill Morganfield, son of Muddy Waters, who authored the first tune "Look What You've Done." People, this apple did not fall far from the tree! Morganfield stays close to the roots. Whether he is covering his "Pops" (as he calls his dad), Peter Chatman, aka Memphis Slim, Richard "Doc" Malone, or Willie Dixon, the blues are a strong presence! Throughout this recording Morganfield is supported by a fine cast of musicians, among them guitarists Eddie Taylor, Jr. and Bob Margolin - a Muddy Waters Band veteran and one of the finest slide guitarists alive today! Also on the job are Mark Williams, Jim Horn, Chuck Cotton, Augie Meyers, Colin Linden, Doc Malone and last but certainly not least, one of my personal favorites, Tom "Mookie" Brill on bass.

The first song on this recording that Morganfield penned is a lament about the economy, "Money's Gettin' Cheaper." Then he goes on to cover a rare Dixon tune "Ooh Wee."

Now, there are still people who think that the blues means sad music about losing someone or something (like your booze) , but you get down tune number 5, that musically starts out sounding like your typical blues about the aforementioned and SURPRISE! I must tell you, when I read the song titles to my husband/guitarist, Jim, his reaction was predictable, seeing how he's a Southern man. "No Butter For My Grits” What kind of nonsense is that? I never heard of such a thing! Everybody knows you gotta have butter for your grits," he exclaimed! Well, it becomes obvious that Big Bill knows it, too, as he tells a tale in song about going from store to store and place to place, even knocking on his neighbor's door looking for some butter for his grits! He continues his playful style with another original titled "Tight Things," but gets back to business talking about the "Devil At My Door."

Big Bill and Doc Malone do a little up-tempo swing/blues duet on number 8, "I Feel Alright Again." The final 3 songs, all originals, finish this disc off nicely. The mood stays light on the next tune, "Another Lonely Night" in spite of the subject, then it's back to "the blues" as we know them with the powerful intro of "Hot Love." The last tune, "Son Of The Blues," is auto-biographical with a groove reminiscent of his "Pops" songs "Still A Fool" and "Catfish Blues."

All in all, the title of this recording says it all, "Blues With A Mood." Big Bill Morganfield's guitar playing and strong, commanding vocals do the job. --- Ms. Marci, bostonblues.com

Big Bill Morganfield continues to forge his own sound with a delicate balancing act on this, his forth album. He pays tribute to his dad and the Chicago sound he helped create on the title track, but he has a jazzy side that keeps moving the blues in a more sophisticated direction as well. Al Duncan's "Too Late Brother" opens things with a juke-joint rocker in the style of Morganfield's dad, with Steve Guyger's harp tossing some fat on the fire. "High Gas Prices," a Morganfield original, gives the country blues an urban edge with a tune too many sang in the waning months of 2009. Morganfield sings Pearl Woods' "I Play Dirty" with a winning combination of humor and aggression, with Clark Stern's organ giving the tune a sanctified feel. "Who's the Fool," another original, is a shuffle on the familiar subject of a faithless woman, and Morganfield growls out the lyric with plenty of panache. What really distinguishes Morganfield from his dad is his way with love songs. Muddy always sounded dangerous, even when he was proclaiming his passion. Big Bill's voice is smoother and more mellow, and when he sings a soulful tune like Buddy Guy's neo-R&B ballad "My Love Is Real," his voice has a seductive power his dad lacked. On Howlin' Wolf's "My Last Affair" he turns up the wattage and bares his tortured soul with a hopeless vulnerability that's enhanced by some stinging guitar work. Former Waters guitarist Bob Margolin, the man behind Morganfield's first two sets, produced the album and kept things grounded in the traditional Chicago sound. Guyger's harp is splendid throughout, but with three guitarists playing in the session -- Morganfield, Margolin, and Brian Bisesi -- some detailed liner notes would have been helpful to determine who's playing on the various tracks. --- j. poet, Rovi

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 19, 1956, Big Bill Morganfield is the son of McKinley Morganfield, better known as Muddy Waters. Big Bill Morganfield was raised by his grandmother in southern Florida and now resides in the Atlanta area. Muddy Waters wished that one of his kids would follow him and play music, says Big Bill Morganfield. A few years after his father died, Big Bill Morganfield started playing guitar. In the meantime, he used his bachelor's degrees in English from Tuskegee University and Communications from Auburn University to make a living as a teacher. Than he formed a band and was unhappy with the sound of the music. Big Bill Morganfield learned the art of songwriting and to play the blues. Big Bill Morganfield's debut recording, Rising Son was recorded in the "windy city" and produced by Bob Margolin, Muddy Waters' long time guitarist. Other former members of the Muddy Waters Blues Band also joined Big Bill Morganfield in the studio: Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Paul Oscher, Pinetop Perkins, and Robert Stroger. Like his father, Big Bill Morganfield sings with a deep and hard, throaty voice. His Left Hand Blues which chucks along railroad-style over a lazy slide riff, is one of five original songs on Rising Son. He also covers two of his father's songs, Screamin' and Cryin' and Champagne and Reefer. Big Bill Morganfields's continuing success in presenting a new Morganfield Blues music into the next century that would certainly make his father proud. --- bluessearchengine.com
