Rounder Records proudly announces the forthcoming release of a special edition blue vinyl LP titled GEORGE THOROGOOD AND THE DELAWARE DESTROYERS - the original mix of George Thorogood And The Destroyers’ self-titled debut album, which was originally recorded in 1976. The rare collection, which also includes a bonus never-released before song, “Goodbye Baby,” and cover artwork of Thorogood’s first-ever publicity photo, will be available only Record Store day on April 18 at participating independent retailers nationwide. The release of the album contains: "You Got to Lose," "Madison Blues,” “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,” "Can't Stop Lovin',” "Ride On Josephine," "Homesick Boy," "I'll Change My Style," "Delaware Slide" and “Goodbye Baby” (bonus track).

The “first take” of the band’s debut album featuring Thorogood’s original three-piece -- Thorogood on vocals, electric guitar, harmonica, Ron Smith on guitar and Jeff Simon on drums, the album features Thorogood’s first incarnation of the then George Thorogood And The Delaware Destroyers, modeled on Hound Dog Taylor’s format—two guitars and drums. The actual studio album that was later released in 1977 included bass player Bill Blough, who joined the band several months after the first raw sessions took place. The decision was made to overdub Bill onto the existing tracks for the studio release, and the chemistry was so strong, that Thorogood, Blough and Simon are still together in 2015.

Says Scott Billington, Vice President, A&R of Rounder Records, “Rounder founder Ken Irwin kept remembering the original mixes—the rawness and immediacy of George playing live in the studio, which is the missing early recorded chapter of the band’s history. We are now offering to fans, the first album by George Thorogood And The Delaware Destroyers, as it was first heard, remixed from the original 24-track tapes by Paul Q. Kolderie (whose credits include Radiohead and Pixies).

Billington adds, “The most startling aspect about this album is the focus and power of George’s performance—how he had found not only a compelling voice for reinterpreting the songs of his heroes, but how he delivered them with such convincing and unaffected authority. It’s something to which every young blues band aspires, and George had it from the beginning.”

George Thorogood and the Destroyers has become an American music institution, carrying the flame of no-frills rock ’n roll from one century to the next. When the band played its first gigs in the mid-1970s, Thorogood’s heroes such as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and John Lee Hooker were still actively touring. Having added to their legacy with his own repertoire of new blues and boogie standards, Thorogood, over the decades, stands as one of the stalwarts of American roots music. George Thorogood (born December 31, 1951) is a blues-rock and rock performer from Wilmington, Delaware. He was raised on Clearview Avenue in Naamans Gardens, a suburb of Wilmington, Delaware. During this time he went to Brandywine High School. Thorogood cut his debut album titled Better Than the Rest in 1974, and released it that same year. In the autumn of 1976 he recorded his second album, the eponymous George Thorogood with his band, The Destroyers (sometimes also known as The Delaware Destroyers or simply GT and D) and issued the album in 1977. Thorogood released his next album titled Move It On Over in the autumn of 1978 with The Destroyers, which included the hit “Move It On Over” in 1978. “Please Set A Date” and “Who Do You Love” both followed in 1979.

During the 1980s, and 1990s, Thorogood recorded some of his most well known works, Bad to the Bone (used to great effect during the bar scene in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and in the opening scene of John Carpenter’s Christine), “I Drink Alone” (from his Maverick album), “You Talk Too Much”, and “If You Don’t Start Drinking, I’m Gonna Leave”.

Thorogood is best known for his animated stage presence and loud, raucous electric slide guitar playing. He is also known as “Lonesome George”. ---last.fm

George Thorogood (born February 24, 1950) is an American blues rock vocalist/guitarist from Wilmington, Delaware, United States,[1] known for his hit song "Bad to the Bone" as well as for covers of blues standards such as Hank Williams' "Move It On Over" and John Lee Hooker's "House Rent Boogie/One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer". Another favorite is a cover of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?".

George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers have released sixteen studio albums, including two that were certified Platinum and six that have been certified Gold. The band has sold fifteen million albums worldwide. The band is credited with the early success of Rounder Records.

On their 17th studio album, George Thorogood and The Destroyers pay tribute to their Chess Records heroes, including many of Thorogood's legendary mentors who helped to launch his career in rock & roll. Titled 2120 South Michigan Avenue, the 13-track album will be released by Capitol/EMI on July 12 on CD, vinyl LP, and digital download. '2120' features Thorogood's raw, rocking turn on classics by a who's-who of the blues, including Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter and other Chess greats, as well as new original songs written by Thorogood, the album's producer, Tom Hambridge, and Richard Fleming.

George Thorogood and The Destroyers have been recording and touring for more than 30 years. While in his teens in Delaware, Thorogood was turned on to Chess Records and the label's genre-defining artist roster by the Rolling Stones.

"The first Rolling Stones album I bought, 12x5, included '2120 South Michigan Avenue'," says Thorogood. "I said, 'I know I've heard this somewhere before" I wrote to Chess, they sent me a catalog, and my life was changed."

Named for the address of Chess Records? Chicago headquarters, 2120 South Michigan Avenue is produced by musician, songwriter and producer Tom Hambridge, a four-time GRAMMY Award nominee and 2010 GRAMMY winner for Best Contemporary Blues Album (Hambridge produced Buddy Guy's Living Proof) and ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award winner. The album's featured guests include 2010 GRAMMY Award winners Buddy Guy and Charlie Musselwhite.

The album opens with 'Going Back,' a blistering new song written by Hambridge and Thorogood, setting the stage for Thorogood and The Destroyers to rip through classic Chess chestnuts including 'High Heel Sneakers' (featuring Buddy Guy, who originally recorded the song for Chess), Willie Dixon's 'Seventh Son,' Howlin? Wolf's 'Spoonful,' Chuck Berry's 'Let It Rock,' Muddy Waters' 'Two Trains Running,' Bo Diddley's 'Bo Diddley,' J.B. Lenoir's 'Mama Talk To Your Daughter,' Sonny Boy Williamson's 'Help Me,' Little Walter's 'My Babe' (featuring Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica), and Jimmy Rogers' 'Chicago Bound.' George Thorogood forged his signature sound of blues-infused rock & roll with the musical guidance he received from his Chess heroes. The Destroyers fought their way to the top, barging out of Delaware in the '70s as a jarringly high-energy bunch (also featuring drummer Jeff Simon and bassist Billy Blough), playing raucous, slide guitar-stoked, blues-rock takes on tunes by Chuck Berry, Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley and others. Soon, they were touring and gigging with many of these statesmen of the blues, and learning invaluable lessons with every encounter.

"We were playing with these tough guys ' these legends ' away from their mean streets of Chicago. The audiences on the road were a real shift from the rough scene they fought through at home," says Thorogood. "That's the blues. That's the education I got, hanging out day in and day out. There isn't much mystery involved with a George Thorogood record -- you know you're going to get some raunchy slide guitar, growled vocals, barroom ready rockers and loads of rough and ready blues & roll. The only real question is will Thorogood and his group deliver the real deal Thorogood of the past or a watered-down imitation. His 2006 album The Hard Stuff delivers the hard stuff in a way Thorogood hasn't for awhile. The title track serves notice right away that Thorogood's heart and soul are in all the way. It rips and hollers like classic Destroyers; Thorogood evens sounds passionate and angry for a change. The rest of the record struggles a bit to keep up but is varied and exciting enough to sound like the soundtrack to a wild night at the local old-timers bar. There's some New Orleans R&B (a cover of "Hello, Josephine") jumpy blues ("Moving, Love Doctor," a faithful and raucous cover of the great Hound Dog Taylor's "Give Me Back My Wig"), hard driving, generic (in a good way) rockers ("I Got My Eyes on You," "Any Town USA," "Rock Party") and a John Lee Hooker cover ("Huckle Up Baby"). All of which are pretty standard for Thorogood but the fire with which he runs through his usual paces on The Hard Stuff adds enough vigor to make it an impressive addition to the man's catalog. To his credit, there are some welcome surprises that liven things up immeasurably: the tender and sweet late night ballad ("Little Rain") which shows admirable restraint and sports a gloriously clichéd and perfect sax solo, a rollicking acoustic slide workout on Johnny Shines' "Dynaflow Blues," and most surprising of all, a jangling and reverent cover of Bob Dylan's "Drifter's Tale." While the record doesn't exactly capture the loose, rock hard feel of albums he cut in his glory days, it is no patch on them and should remind people that Thorogood is a master of good time rockin' blues. ---Tim Sendra, allmusic.com

In 1978, George Thorogood was just beginning to make some noise on the blues-rock circuit. This was his second album, and what's now almost a cliché then sounded fresh and vital. Thorogood's energy, rousing vocals and driving guitar playing came roaring through on inspired covers of Elmore James' "The Sky Is Crying," Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love" and Chuck Berry's "It Wasn't Me." He even did a credible Piedmont blues on Brownie McGhee's "So Much Trouble." While Thorogood went on to make more commercially succesful albums, the spirit and innocence in his early releases has seldom been duplicated. George Thorogood is forever consistent and Maverick is more of the blues/rock driving sound the journeyman guitarist is known for. John Lee Hooker's "Crawling King Snake" is what you expect from this crew while "Memphis, Tennessee" bursts at the seams with George's trademark slide and Hank Carter's saxophone. Recorded at the legendary Dimension Sound Studio in July of 1984 on the outskirts of Boston, the earthy sound catches all the band's primal energy from opener "Gear Jammer" to the wailing sax of "Long Gone." There are only four originals from Thorogood, the album chock full of Johnny Otis, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, John Lee Hooker and others. It is territory that the group has covered on pretty much every previous record, but it's done with the artistic passion that makes it real. You wouldn't expect any changes from George Thorogood, whose pile-driving rocking-blues and boogie have maintained their appeal despite the emergence of numerous similar-sounding ensembles. Thorogood's rough-hewn singing and always tantalizing playing are on target through the usual mix of originals and covers (this time including Bo Diddley and Willie Dixon).
