I first heard the Krommer concerto #1 performed live by the late Jack Brymer with the London Philharmonic orchestra in 1976, and performed it myself accompanied by the National Youth Orchestra; I have been amazed since that this work still remains somewhat obscure amongst the clarinettist's repertoire.

Beautifully written, in a vein that is somewhat of a cross between Mozart and Weber, the lyrical and technically challenging aspects of these works are wonderfully displayed by Paul Meyer, probably one of the most gifted clarinetists today.

Not once do the more challenging elements sound rushed; the orchestra never dominates the soloist, and Meyer's interpretation certainly, in my opinion, is on a par with that of the late Brymer at his best. For ANY clarinetist looking to expand a collection of beautifully musical works for the instrument, this recording is a DEFINATE must have. --- Englishman In the USA, amazon.com

London Mozart Players
Matthias Bamert – conductor

Recorded in St. Jude's Church, London, NW11 on 11 & 12 November 1993.

The works recorded here are from 1803 and (probably) from around 1820. The earlier work seems tighter in construction while the later work has a pre-Romantic expansiveness that mirrors the direction Beethoven was taking in his later symphonies. Both are memorably tuneful and exhibit expert development of their melodic material.

Franz Krommer's wind music dates from a golden age of wind music composition, a time where profound sentiments, intellectual discourse, and delicacy of expression in instrumental music was not seen to be the sole domain of strings or piano. As all of Krommer's superlative wind music, the quartets Op. 46 are highly instrumentally idiomatic and often virtuosic. They exploit the full three octave range of the period bassoon to dramatic effect, use a full palette of tonal colors and textures, and feature many different effects at which the bassoon excels; running staccato figures, wide intervallic leaps, as well as soaring tenor cantabile lines. ---Editorial Reviews
