Clem Leek returns with his third studio album America on YEN. After his stunning debut album Holly Lane, Leek has been likened to Nils Frahm and Peter Broderick. Trained as a pianist from a young age, Clem Leek grew up around music, picking up every instrument he could lay his hands on. He often uses the beauty of natural surroundings from his childhood and personal experiences as inspiration for his works. He draws from a range of genres to create a unique & contemporary style and is now a well recognised name in the 'Modern Classical' genre.

America is a reflection of Clem’s personal transition from Europe to the U.S. Each track refers to new experiences, both information and sensory. Moving from the countryside to the city brought about a plethora of new friends, landscapes and routines and this is reflected in the new styles, instruments and techniques that have bled into the album. The ambi- ent, electronica and raw instrumental styles are a reflection of the ever-changing city atmosphere, always changing, al- ways growing. Keen observers and listeners may see more wider American references to NASA space shuttles, and hear the hidden everyday sounds of life here. ---clemleek.bandcamp.com

There always been something quite personal in the music of Clem Leek. Trained as a pianist from a young age and now a developed into a composer, sound artist, sound designer, and multi-instrumentalist, he has drawn heavily on his surroundings and life experiences from the very start; consider the misty, overcast reflections of growing up in England on Holly Lane (2010) and the intimate piano & guitar based sketches of Lifenotes (2011) and Rest (2013). The past year has apparently been on one of significant change for Leek and this is reflected in his latest opus and third studio album entitled America.

“America is a reflection of Clem’s personal transition from Europe to the U.S. Each track refers to new experiences, both information and sensory. Moving from the countryside to the city brought about a plethora of new friends, landscapes and routines and this is reflected in the new styles, instruments and techniques that have bled into the album. “

One thing that has not changed a great deal, however, is Leek’s penchant for concise forms. He is a masterful musical sketch artist who captivates here with a dozen colorful vignettes of an expansive, filmic quality that belies their diminutive length. Leek can express more in two minutes than many artists can in ten as he uses lyrical piano lines and layers of strings, voice, & electronics to convey wide-eyed wonder and the willing embrace of both personal change & new opportunities so well symbolized by Chris Keenan’s striking rural highway scene gracing the album’s cover. This is one musical road trip you won’t want to miss. ---stationarytravels.wordpress.com

Lifenotes is a nice mixture of complex atmospheres and stripped back pieces. It has a long track list (sixteen), but they are all short tracks, easily digested.

Clem Leek is a composer who has quietly been working away for some time now. He is very often described as neo-classical, which is a pretty loose term for modern music that is based on traditional classical constructs. Although it certainly draws influence from that genre, I would say it is a bit more soundscape oriented. Ambient washes of drones and electronica popping and fizzing while simple melodic motifs are used, often repetitively to add colour and definition to the pieces. Based in Bath, UK, I first came across Clem at a small gig in an underground venue in said town, and was pretty impressed. Not what I was expecting given the venue, it being more suited to a grimey punk band or or something, but the atmospheric and emotive music of his performance was engaging and interesting, if merely for its juxtaposition of content and context.

Since then, Clem has released several works, all steadily developing his style as a composer. This latest offering is another step on his journey. Lifenotes is a nice mixture of complex atmospheres and stripped back pieces. It has a long track list (sixteen), but they are all short tracks, easily digested. Centred on the piano, but also using many other real instruments such as violin and guitar, the album is very much played rather then produced for the main part.

The recording is pretty low tech it has to be said. I once read an article which argued that the recording process was as much a part of the finished product as the performance it captures, and the buzzing and clicking captured during that process is just important to the music as anything else, and should be celebrated as such. Well, you can certainly hear the recording process in all its glory on this album, which could be considered a celebration of the art, or could be seen as unnecessary hiss depending on where you stand on the argument. Either way, it’s a minor gripe, if that’s even what it is. ---Gustave Savy, igloomag.com

Beautiful and tranquil. And yet, very unique in the Ambient genre - not just synth. Clem uses a nice balance of delicate guitar and synth to create a beautiful landscape. I particularly like the piece "Burleson, TX". It's as if I'm transported to a sweet summer day in Burleson Texas. The CD is short but well worth the small investment. ---D. This is an EP, recorded and written in two days whilst the snow was falling outside my house. Each track, even though bundled in an E.P is its own separate entity and relates to different times of the day, different snowy weather conditions and consequently different emotion. I hope you enjoy it. --Clem Leek, discogs.com

Clem Leek - composer, performer, producer

Clem Leek is a British musician and composer from Kent in Southern England. Since getting an MA in Music Composition under his belt, Clem has set about getting his wonderful Schedios label up and running and recording material of his own over the last year. 'Through The Annular' was his first EP, fusing some of his piano compositions with the dusty crackle of a 78rpm record. This latter EP was used to spearhead his own Schedios imprint. His second ep 'Snow Tales' was released as a free download on Experimedia. His third ep "pimlico" is a collaboration with Jannick Schou and came out on the Dead Pilot label, it had sold out within hours. Clem Leek's sound is influenced by a number of sources, from the minimalist composers Steve Reich and Philip Glass through to renowned musicians such as Keith Kennif, Max Richter, Matt Hales and many others.

With such a strong reputation for his ability to perform on the piano/keyboard whether live or in the studio, you'd perhaps expect Clem's first full album to be a carefully arranged feast of such compositions. However, 'Holly Lane' is instead a brooding and mysterious listen from start to finish, showing this talented young artists wide production pallette. Throughout this stunning 43 minute record, an overwhelming level of detail can be heard. It is awash with mysterious drone passages, echoes of ghostly instrument accents, glimpses of forgotten radio broadcasts, quiet, unobtrusive percussive sounds all underpinned by a subtle cavernous celestial chorus which really cements this all-round solid album debut. ---clemleek.bandcamp.com
