Ten exquisite miniatures written by Australian pianist/composer Luke Howard and Brooklyn-based trumpeter Nadje Noordhuis, recorded in a Berlin apartment in the summer of 2014. ---bandcamp.com

"Ten Sails" is the debut record from acclaimed Australian pianist/composer Luke Howard and Brooklyn-based trumpeter Nadje Noordhuis.

Recorded in a Berlin apartment in the summer of 2014, the record comprises ten exquisite minatures written by both peripatetic composers. Combining cinematic sweep, transportive emotion, and rich melodic grandeur, Australian-born trumpeter/composer Nadje Noordhuis possesses one of the most unforgettably lyrical voices in modern music. Her deeply-felt, clarion tone and evocative compositional gift meld classical rigor, jazz expression, and world music accents into a sound that is distinctively her own.

Noordhuis was one of ten semi-finalists in the 2007 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition and was selected as a Carnegie Hall Young Artist to undertake a weeklong residency with trumpet great Dave Douglas in 2010. Recent gigs include a week at New York's Village Vanguard with Rudy Royston's 303, performances at jazz festivals in Europe, Canada and Brazil with Grammynominated Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, and regular appearances with her quintet at the historic 55 Bar in Greenwich Village. Luke studied classical piano as a child before graduating with honours from the Victorian College of the Arts. Twice a finalist in the Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition, he has shared the stage and recording studio with many musicians in his career, including Ben Frost, the Grigoryan Brothers, and Lior.

Luke's debut solo record 'Sun, Cloud' was launched to a sold out audience at the Melbourne Recital Centre in 2013. In 2015, Luke opened for Benjamin Clementine on the Royal Albert Hall stage of The Great Escape festival in Brighton, UK. 2014 also saw the release of the remix album 'Night, Cloud', and 'Two & One', a photo book with accompanying music. ---jbhifi.com.au

Luke Howard - piano

Combining elements of chamber music and ambient electronica into his tranquil creations, Luke Howard has earned credits as a pianist, film scorer, and producer in addition to recording his own modern compositions. He worked as an assistant to experimentalists like Nico Muhly, Ben Frost, and Valgeir Sigurðsson while establishing himself as a composer and instrumentalist. The Australian made his Montreux Jazz Festival competition debut in 2001 and began to find work scoring film shorts, television, games, and theater in the late 2000s. He debuted the Luke Howard Trio with Jonathan Zion and Daniel Farrugia on 2010's The Meadowlands, and was nominated for the Australian Music Prize in 2013 for his own Sun, Cloud.

Howard studied classical piano from an early age and went on to graduate from the University of Melbourne's Victorian College of the Arts. In the early 2000s, he was a two-time finalist in the Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition. In the meantime playing piano on recordings by artists including Glenn Cannon, Slava Grigoryan, and Don Banks, he composed music for the 2009 documentary Children of the Eclipse, leading to further assignments in television, film, games, and theater. In 2010, he made his recording debut as bandleader on The Meadowlands by the Luke Howard Trio, which also included bassist Jonathan Zion and drummer Daniel Farrugia. A year later, Open Road was a collaborative album with bassist Janos Bruneel. Back in the scoring realm, Howard was an assistant to Ben Frost on his score for the 2011 online game World of Darkness (based on the Andrei Tarkovsky film Solaris). The following year, he assisted Nico Muhly on his album Drones and Valgeir Sigurðsson on Architecture of Loss.

After signing with U.K. label Mercury KX, the year 2013 brought two releases by Howard: the solo LP Sun, Cloud and the trio album A Dove, a Lion, a Coast, a Pirate. Sun, Cloud earned him a nomination for the Australian Music Prize. It was followed by a remix album titled Night, Cloud in 2014, which also saw the release of Two & One. His score to that year's Where Do Lilacs Come From won Best Music for a Short Film at the 2014 APRA/AMCOS Screen Music Awards. A collaboration with trumpeter Nadje Noordhuis, Ten Sails followed in 2015, and in 2016 Howard released the full-length Two Places via Mercury KX and two solo piano EPs, Forgotten Postcards and Eighty-Eight Days, on 1631 Recordings. The Luke Howard Trio album The Electric Night Descends also arrived in 2016. He returned with Open Heart Story for piano, string orchestra, and electronics in 2018. ---Marcy Donelson, allmusic.com

What is really great about Two Places is that there are so many of those “wow…” moments where you are fully immersed in a soft and deep music, that really inebriates you and taps you something inside. Two Places is the second solo album of the Melbourne-born composer Luke Howard whose name is well known for his compositions for film and theatre. He is also the leader of the group Magnolia and of the Luke Howard Trio. I didn’t know about his music instead before hearing about it in the amazing world of Echoes and Dust, and the first thing I thought listening to Two Places is that Luke Howard composes melancholic, emotionally fueled, and undeniably beautiful music.

Every time I discover a new artist/band I start looking at their previous works and I go back to the first release, and so I did with Luke Howard and his debut Sun, Cloud that’s sublime. Two Places can be considered a kind of continuum of Sun, Cloud like if the two albums were parts of the same experiment where the musician, influenced by both electronic and neo and modern-classical music, incorporates various stylistic elements into his work. ---Daniela Patrizi, echoesanddust.com
