Falla was an extremely slow worker. He completed only about a dozen major works, and spent several decades of his life trying to finish this religious/mystical oratorio, his most ambitious work. At his death, he left various parts in different states of completion, ranging from the totally performable to disorganized sketches. There were many reasons why he failed to complete the work, including his own hyperactive sense of self-criticism, his poor health, and the shock of moving to Argentina as a refugee of the Spanish Civil War. Ernesto Halffter, himself a composer of considerable ability, spent another three or four decades tinkering with these sketches, finally arriving at this final version. As you can hear for yourself, it was worth the effort. ---David Hurwitz, amazon.com
