At first, Lisa Ekdahl's squeaky, girlish voice may seem inappropriate for the pop standards she has chosen to make her trade, but given some time, her voice and laid-back style become endearing. True, she occasionally seems mannered and borrows heavily from her inspirations (most notably Billie Holiday), but she shows signs of developing her own style throughout her second American album, Back to Earth. Like its predecessor, When Did You Leave Heaven, Back to Earth was recorded with the Peter Nordahl Trio and has a charming mellow vibe. Nordahl has an elegant turn of phrase and his rhythm section -- drummer Ronnie Gardiner and bassist Patrik Boman -- has a light touch that keeps the focus on Ekdahl. It is true that her voice may strike some listeners as odd, but it's girlish, not thin, which means she can nail the emotions of the songs. There may be a few missteps here and there, but she delivers ballads ("What Is This Thing Called Love?," "The Laziest Gal in Town," "Now or Never") as well as swing ("Down with Love," "I Get a Kick Out of You"). Yes, the selections are a little predictable and Ekdahl is a bit of an acquired taste, but ultimately, Back to Earth is quite charming. ~ AllMusic

2009 album from the Swedish singer/songwriter, whose voice has been compared to Blossom Dearie, Diana Krall and Astrud Gilberto. Ekdahl became an overnight sensation in Sweden with her 1994 debut album and has since become one of the country's most beloved musical talents. Give Me That Slow Knowing Smile presents an extremely inspired collection of Pop-Folk sung in English and entirely written Lisa herself. The album was partly produced by Swedish multi-instrumentalist Mattias Blomdahl.

In the winter of 1994 Lisa Ekdahl was brought into superstardom over night in scandinavia. Lisa’s debut album sold quadruple platinum and gave her three grammy awards. Her laid back style, matched with her fragility and sensitivity has dazzled fans and critics alike.

Several European countries and especially France has fallen for her understated way of performing jazz standards, bossanova and original songs. Still few people know much about Lisa’s life and few know that she creates and records her music in a tucked away house across a courtyard in central Stockholm. She has never let a journalist or a TV-team cross her doorstep.

Until now. And in her own way.

In the DVD documentary “Lisa Ekdahl at the Olympia, Paris” Lisa opens the door to her universe. The film is maybe one of the most beautiful and artistically genuine Swedish music documentary ever made. This DVD contains songs from the Olympia mixed with Lisa meeting with friends, getting into conversation and playing songs in her home in Stockholm. In Paris Lisa plays a sold out show at the legendary L’Olympia. The CD is a recording of this show.

The Olympia concert (CD and DVD) was the grand finale of Lisa Ekdahl’s critically acclaimed European tour 2009-2010 that followed the release of the album “Give me that slow knowing smile”. ---lisaekdahl.com

Lisa got her first record deal with EMI when she was hired by singer/songwriter Toni Holgersson to sing background vocals on his album. The background singing didn’t turn out well but instead Lisa was discovered by EMI’s head of A&R and offered to make her own record, which became the debut album “Lisa Ekdahl” (EMI).

At the age of 19 Lisa Ekdahl started to perform in small jazz clubs with swedish jazz trio “The Peter Nordahl trio”. Lisa has sometimes referred to the years playing smaller clubs with this great trio as a form or “musical education.”

Lisa & the trio played a series of concerts at club La Villa in the Saint Germain area of Paris which was the starting point for Lisa’s career in France. Lisa Ekdahl & Peter Nordahl Trio released two albums together: “When did you leave Heaven” & “Back to earth”.

In 2001 Lisa released the bossa nova album “Lisa Ekdahl sings Salvadore Poe”. The album gained a lot of appreciation in several european countries, especially in France where the album sold gold.

After living in NYC for some time Lisa went back to Stockholm to record the 9 original compositions for “Give me that slow knowing smile”, released in 2009 by Sony Music France. The album was released in 14 countries.

Lisa’s latest project is the CD & DVD deluxe combo “Lisa Ekdahl at the Olympia, Paris“. --- lisaekdahl.com

Yummi. A Lisa Ekdahl album is a happening. In the first place, this is NOT a jazz album, no sir. It's an italian bossanova album (written and composed by Mr Poe), and what a perfection this is. This is the only album where Lisa's voice goes "with" the music, i.e., singer flows voice, soul and mood (and you can imagine body!) with music. If you have listened to "Back To Earth" or "When Did You Leave Heaven" you know what I mean: Lisa sings Jazz with that angellical-almost-childish voice "against" the bass and drum and only saved by the piano, but don't get me wrong: the whole ensemble is of a perfection difficult to attain, and no aggressivity whatsoever can be found (quite on the contrary). These albums reflect a perfect tempo, voice and band are apart but are felt together and surely with a complicity rare to be found. I've read comparisons to Diana Krall and Norah Jones. For God's Sake, stop mixing compote with honey, though both are sweet... Diana Krall sings with the music, no contrast from that perspective and Norah Jones drowns in the music, tames the piano. Back to "Sings Salvadore Poe", this is a very coherent and homogeneous album that soothes your soul. As a starter, listen to "Daybreak" (nothing to do with Beth Orton's Daybreaker - excelent), following listen to the jazzy "How Many More Times" and go immediately to "The Color of You". Astounding. You're prepared for the rest of the album (or just play it from the beginning). Oh, and your life will change. How? You'll run to get everything from Lisa. And will start discovering the Scandinavian-jazz-gate. And what a wonderful discovery that will be!!! ---Joao, amazon.com
