Smooth Jazz is an outgrowth of fusion, one that emphasizes its polished side. Generally, smooth jazz relies on rhythms and grooves instead of improvisation. There are layers of synthesizers, lite-funk rhythms, lite-funk bass, elastic guitars, and either trumpets, alto, or soprano saxophones. The music isn't cerebral, like hard bop, nor is it gritty and funky like soul-jazz or groove -- it is unobtrusive, slick, and highly polished, where the overall sound matters more than the individual parts.

Smooth jazz is a genre of music that grew out of jazz fusion and is influenced by R&B, funk, rock, and pop music styles (separately, or, in any combination).

In general, a smooth jazz track is downtempo (the most widely played tracks are in the 90–105 BPM range), layering a lead, melody-playing instrument (saxophones – especially soprano and tenor – are the most popular, with guitars a close second) over a backdrop that typically consists of programmed rhythms and various pads and/or samples. Although many listeners and record companies group smooth and contemporary jazz together, the genres are different. Smooth jazz is generally considered background music, whereas "straight-ahead" contemporary jazz is seen as demanding the listener's undivided attention.

Smooth jazz groups or recording artists tend to play their instruments in a melodic fashion such that they are recognizable within just a few measures; this category includes names such as saxophonists Kenny G, David Sanborn, the late George Howard, Najee and Art Porter, Jr.; guitarists George Benson, Marc Antoine, Peter White, Johnathan Butler, Ray Parker, Jr, Norman Brown, Ronny Jordan, and Yves Vincent; pianists Joe Sample, David Benoit, and Bradley Joseph. Some performers, such as Dave Koz, Bob James, and Nathan East are notable for their numerous collaborations with many of the genre's big names. Groups include Fourplay, Pieces of a Dream, Acoustic Alchemy, Airborne and The Rippingtons. Female performers include Keiko Matsui, Joyce Cooling, Mindi Abair, Candy Dulfer, Sade, Brenda Russell, Pamela Williams, Regina Belle, and Anita Baker.

Ever since the triumph of Paul Simon's Graceland, mainstream pop music fans seem more open to the spirited rhythms and galloping guitars of authentic South African musicians. To this point, smooth jazz has only paid lip service to the vast creative resources of that country's music scene, with Jonathan Butler (who appears here) mixing in a few bars of some home cookin' between his playful acoustic guitar melodies and silky ballads. This collection was the natural outgrowth of several trips label president Dave Love took to that country last year and his fascination with the way said rhythms could blend into his company's usual pop instrumental format. Love's idea was to let his artists Joe McBride and Andy Narell jam on various cuts with the natives, then let the natives loose to do their own thing, and he pulls it off quite attractively. There's no mistaking McBride's lively, melodic piano style on the top of "11K's to Freedom," but more impressive is the way he textures that with a simmering organ sound as bassist Muza Manzini turns the tune into a romp to the border. McBride creates a similarly seductive blues/jazz blend on the South African classic "Manenberg," letting Butler flash his trademark snappy acoustic chops as he reminds listeners where he hails from. On the moody "Mpule," Narell's one-of-a-kind steel pans ride gently over a thick percussion pattern by Roland Guerrero and the dueling guitars of Ray Obiedo and Jonathan Crossley. Love himself wrote the dreamy, hypnotic title track as a showcase for one of the country's best-loved exports, horn master Hugh Masekela. Masekela's distant, soulful cry is echoed by a warm, chanting response from vocalists Darnel Alexander and Gloria Bosman. "Gumba in Durban" is the most exciting track, featuring a horn-section-splashed romp fusing hot percussion, a jumpy sax melody by McCoy Mrubata, Wayne DeLano's lively flute, and Errol Dyers' irresistible rolling electric guitar. Smooth Africa is an effective bridge between American smooth jazz and South African's ethnic flavors. A second volume with less star power and more showcasing by the unknowns would be a welcome treat. --- Jonathan Widran, Rovi

Smooth jazz may have many derivatives but in general it gets its name due to its down tempo. This along with a layering lead that includes a melody-playing instrument, which typically consists of saxophones or guitars, over a backdrop such as programmed rhythms and various pads and/or samples. While this simply sounds like elevator music, smooth jazz also contains formats that have vocals and tracks from the work of artists like Simply Red or Luther Vandross, who are normally considered “soul” or “R&B”.

What differentiates smooth jazz from soul is that the music must be mellow and soft. Professionals state that there should be no disturbances on the surface, no undercurrents, nothing challenging or obtrusive in the sound. Smooth jazz stemmed out of a decision to use music to create an instrumental based format that would take the place of music of the 70s and early 80s, which had provided background music for office and business environments.

Smooth jazz was brought to the forefront of the music industry by soprano saxophone players like Grover Washington, Jr., Wayne Shorter and Nathan Davis. Wes Montgomery and Grant Green influenced the industry as well with a mellow flavor of electric guitar. Jazz-fusion ensembles such as Spyro Gyra and Bob James’ Fourplay were important in the development of the genre as well.

Most can recognize groups identified as smooth jazz within a few measures as there is a melodic tempo to its sound. Popular smooth jazz artists of today include saxophonists Kenny G, David Sanborn and Art Porter, Jr.; guitarists George Benson, Marc Antoine, and Peter White; and pianists Joe Sample, David Benoit, and Bradley Joseph. As for groups, these include; Fourplay, Pieces of a Dream, Acoustic Alchemy, and The Rippingtons. On the female performers side there is Keiko Matsui, Joyce Cooling, Mindi Abair, Candy Dulfer, Sade, Brenda Russell, Pamela Williams, Regina Belle, and Anita Baker.

Smooth jazz remained successful until 2007 when it began to show signs of waning. Music industry insiders felt smooth jazz was dying out and began pulling out of the genre. However, those in the industry say that smooth jazz concerts and record sales continue to show strong fan support.

Despite the commercial decline in the popularity of smooth jazz, many prominent stations around the United States are still playing it. Why has the popularity of smooth jazz faded? Many say it is due to a handful of factors that include a lack of compelling new music, over-reliance on instrumental cover versions of pop songs similar to the old fashioned ‘elevator music’ style, lack of revenue and the genre not being viable during the current economic crisis. Many purists of the format also feel that the smooth jazz interpretation has strayed too far from its roots in contemporary jazz and new age music by over-relying on soft urban vocals

Will smooth jazz have a place in the future? It could all depend on how creative the artists become and basically, where people’s tastes lie as time goes by. --- 977music.com

Lounge music is a retrospective description of music popular in the 1950s and 1960s. It is a type of mood music meant to evoke in the listeners the feeling of being in a place — a jungle, an island paradise, outer space, et cetera — other than where they are listening to it.[1] The range of lounge music encompasses beautiful music-influenced instrumentals, modern electronica (with chillout, nu-jazz and downtempo influences), while remaining thematically focused on its retro-space-age cultural elements. The earliest type lounge music appeared during the 1920s and 1930s, and was known as light music. Contemporaneously, the term lounge music also denotes the types of music played in hotels (the lounge, the bar), casinos, and piano bars.

This cd displays great work from some of acid jazz's top performers, who have taken a little edge off on some of these tunes to make it more smooth jazz friendly. I would highly recommend this cd for anyone who is exploring and tired of the same old headline smooth jazz names i.e. Gerald Albright, Kenny G, Najee, etc. I think these bands try harder and are truer to their music and play for love and not fame! I started collecting acid jazz by listening to compilations and then getting cd's of the bands whose sounds I like. You will have people asking you "who is that?", when you put this baby in! --- Jeff Greene "jeff" (roswell, ga United States)

Smooth jazz is a genre of music that grew out of jazz fusion and is influenced by R&B, funk, rock, and pop music styles (separately, or, in any combination).

Modern derivatives of the genre include the more-recent New Adult Contemporary format of broadcast radio. "Smooth jazz" has been successful as a radio format; however, in 2007, the popularity of the format began to slide. Consequently, it was abandoned by several high-profile radio stations across the U.S.A., perhaps most notably by WQCD (now WEMP) in New York and KKSF in San Francisco. Many industry insiders have speculated that the smooth jazz format may die out, particularly with many of industry giant Clear Channel Communications' stations dropping the genre. Critics of the company, however, blame Clear Channel for the format's decline, citing too much repetition of a sharply-reduced number of tracks on Clear Channel-owned stations that alienated many listeners. Despite the format's demise on commercial radio, a growing number of non-commercial stations have taken up the music. In addition, smooth jazz concerts, recording sales—as well as increased smooth jazz offerings on the Internet—continue to show strong fan support for the genre.
