DaVid Carroll born Nook Schrier, 15 October 1913, Chicago, Illinois, USA. David Carroll became orchestra arranger/conductor for Mercury Records in 1951, and from 1953-62, he and the Jack Halloran Singers appeared on 36 US Top 100 hits including the Crew-Cuts’ ‘Sh-Boom’ (1954, a number 1 hit) and ‘Earth Angel’ (1955); Rusty Draper’s ‘Shifting, Whispering Sands’ (1955), covered in the UK by Eamonn Andrews; and several Vic Damone hits. Carroll’s biggest success was an instrumental version of ‘Melody Of Love’, which peaked at number 8 in 1955, although he will be best remembered as one of the early pioneers of the pop percussion album later refined by Enoch Light. ---Rovi
