Love Island finds him unleashing yet another passel of songs which are all pleasant to the ear, if not completely fresh -- what makes it most interesting is that it could almost be considered a concept album, every song title apparently revolving around jungle tropics, warm winds, sandy beaches, and, more likely than not, a few beauties bearing cocktails to complete the picture. The album kicks off with "Area Code 808," which places the initial action in Hawaii, a twitchy extended fusion revolving around quite a nice funk bassline. The remainder of the set carries on from there, with the groove ebbing and flowing from the punchy "Whistle Bump" to the pleasant and decidedly mellow strains of "San Juan Hut," and on to the title track. It is unfortunate hindsight alone, and no fault whatsoever of Deodato's, that it conjures up nothing so much as scenes from The Love Boat. Damn pop culture. Also of note is "Tahiti Hut," co-written by Deodato and Earth, Wind & Fire's Maurice White, and buoyed by guest appearances by three more EW&F members: Verdine White, Freddie White, and the percussive genius of Philip Bailey. A pleasing piece of easy listening, Love Island probably won't thrill the pants off anyone but the most rabid fan. By this late in the decade, one had kind of heard it all before. But if you should need to hear it all again, Love Island sounds great when the sun is shining. ---Amy Hanson, AllMusic Review

download (mp3 @320 kbs):

yandex mediafire ulozto gett bayfiles

back

Eumir Deodato - Love Island (1978)

<img src="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/ObrMuz/Jazz/EumirDeodato/love.jpg" border="0" alt="Image could not be displayed. Enter Creed Taylor, who gave Deodato a chance to step out on his own as a pianist/leader, doing a few tunes of his own plus a healthy quota of CTI-patented jazz interpretations of classical pieces by Richard Strauss ("Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001)"), Debussy ("Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun"), and bowdlerized Borodin ("Baubles, Bangles and Beads"). Well, "2001" -- a clever, up-tempo Latin-groove takeoff on the opening measures of Strauss' tone poem suddenly exploded and became an improbable hit single. In its wake, Prelude soared to number three on the pop LP charts, and Deodato was propelled out of the arranger-for-hire business. Though overshadowed by "2001," the other tracks also hold up well today, being mostly medium-tempo, sometimes lushly orchestrated, conga-accented affairs that provide velvety showcases for Deodato's lyrical electric piano solos. The record also made a temporary star out of John Tropea, whose electric guitar has a lot of rock & rolling zip and fire, and Hubert Laws, Stanley Clarke, and Marvin Stamm each get a little solo room too. This would be the biggest hit Deodato and CTI ever had, and though short on playing time (32 minutes), it still makes enjoyable listening. --- Richard S. Al Jarreau) (Radio Mix) 3:57

This album slipped out without too much fanfare, with the official website and MySpace barely acknowledging it. That's a shame, as it should really have reached a wider audience by now. Especially when you consider the line up of guest musicians featured on the record. Earlier in 2011, Al Jarreau was being picked up in mainstream press with a greatest hits package and tour, yet he's on two tracks here and very little mention of it anywhere.

To the music. Deodato is behind the Fender Rhodes once again, and not only does this hark back to the classic CTI records, but some of his licks sound like they are lifted from them. Notably, this record is jazzier than others before it. It could stand next to Incognito in a DJ mix easily as well, with dance floor traction throughout. Al Jarreau serves on "I Want You More" which is a Bossa duet with the Italian jazz and pop group Novocento and is credited with "Double Face" which opens the album.

The pick is the title track "The Crossing", purely because it is HEAVY. In contrast to the light jazzy feel of the other tracks, this one weighs in and carries its own. UK group Londonbeat feature, and the edge is noticeable from the introduction. One of Deodato's traits is to have long periods for the musicians to solo, but this one is more route one, grabbing you by the lapels and reminding you of what the man is still capable of achieving.

Look out for Billy Cobham, Airto and John Tropea who are all - incredibly - on the record, Make time for the three instrumentals too, with the standard "Summertime" receiving a full orchestral response to Deodato's keys. All in all, it's a reassuringly good record, with some really great tracks, but it just doesn't make sense that it has received next to no attention given the roll call of legends appearing on it. --- W.
