Perhaps once or twice in a generation a young musician appears out of the blue, breathing spectacular new life into an old musical genre long regarded as passé. So it was with Barbara Dennerlein who was largely responsible for the rebirth of interest in the almost-forgotten Hammond B3. This album, “Barbara Dennerlein Plays Classics”, was recorded when Barbara was only 24 years old, long before worldwide fame that followed. It shows a mastery of the instrument far beyond her years, and stunning bass pedal work that is the envy of other jazz organists. Already by this time, this Munich native had reached the pinnacle of the German and European jazz scene, with far greater fame soon to come. “Barbara Dennerlein Plays Classics” captures that moment in time as a star of the European jazz scene was on the verge of worldwide recognition.

Here, with dazzling Dennerlein style, the Barbara Dennerlein Trio pays homage to some of the unforgettable songs of the ‘50s and ‘60s…. classics that recall names like Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Count Basie, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichel, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and later, the Beatles. Barbara leads her trio effortlessly through swing, bop, ballads, blues, and even a tasty bossa, then tops it all off with two of her own compositions. Through it all, it’s all too easy to forget there is no bassist playing that tight bass… it’s just Barbara’s lightning-fast left foot.

As the title of the new CD "Best Of Blues: Through The Years" by Barbara Dennerlein already reveals, it is all about "Blues" in the widest sense. Thus, the CD assembles a fine selection of blues titles, which Barbara has composed during her career and recorded solo as well as accompanied with different instrumentations. This new CD, therefore, is Barbara’s answer to her concert audience’s frequently expressed desire, to dedicate an entire album specifically to her "Blüser".

"Blues," says Barbara, "is incredibly diverse and can be played in so many different ways. Ever since I first sat down at the organ, the Blues has been, and to this day remains, my companion. No matter what I play, the Blues feeling is perceptible in every moment in my music. The Blues is a source of inspiration and expression of my deepest feelings."

In listening to Barbara perform, it is obvious that she has the blues in her blood. She masterfully coaxes Blue Notes from her beloved Hammond-B3, whether in wonderfully sensitive slow blues or in uptempo bebop blues. Her intense blues feeling and her versatility come to the fore in this compilation, where she celebrates the most different kinds of blues. Barbara, embraces blues styles, from traditional down-to-earth blues, boogie, swing, bebop and funky blues, to the experimental processing of the blues, as in the intro of "Frog Dance", where she conjures fascinating, ethereal sounds as she plays with the drawbars of her Hammond organ.

And then there’s Barbara’s virtuoso pedal technique, a technique so impressive that all recordings on this CD, many having complex bass passages, feature only Barbara’s pedal bass. She creates a kind of rhythmic triptych, playing melody, accompaniment and bass, completely independently to create her own groove. Under Barbara’s magic fingers, the legendary Hammond B3 comes alive.

Barbara Dennerlein differs from most organists by not sounding all that much like Jimmy Smith. She utilizes MIDI with her organ in order to get a different sound and her baselines (which she operates through her foot pedals) really do sound like a bass. Dennerlein began playing organ at 11 and four years later was already gigging in local clubs. She recorded on her own Bebap label and since 1988 has also made albums for Enja that have created a bit of a stir in the U.S., using such sidemen as Ray Anderson and Mitch Watkins. ---Scott Yanow, allmusic.com

Barbara Dennerlein ist unbestritten die Königin der Hammondorgel und prägt national wie international seit über 30 Jahren das Bild dieses Genres. Mit ihrer neuen Veröffentlichung „My Moments“ präsentiert sie einen Mitmitschnitt aus einem Doppelkonzert, aufgenommen vor gut zwei Jahren im Konzertsaal der renommierten Musikhochschule im nordschwedischen Piteå. Das Besondere daran ist, dass Barbara Dennerlein hier Solo zu hören ist und zwar live an ihrem „Stamminstrument“ der Hammondorgel und im Anschluss auf einer Pfeifenorgel.

Auf einer Hammond C3, ausgestattet mit ihrem MIDI Pedal, swingt sie in gewohnter Weise hochinspiriert. Die vorliegende Aufnahme spiegelt gleichzeitig die einzigartige Atmosphäre des Konzertsaales „Studio Acusticum“ wieder, in der sich eine Woehl Orgel befindet, die ihresgleichen sucht. Mit 9000 Pfeifen und 203 Registern zählt das Instrument zu den größten Orgeln weltweit und bietet Barbara Dennerlein zugleich Herausforderung und Freiheit alles das zu spielen, was das Instrument hergibt. Eindrucksvoll stellt sie hier unter Beweis, wie man Manuale, Register und Fußpedale einer klassischen Orgel beherrscht und ihr spielerisch abwechslungsreiche wie spannende Klänge entlockt.

Solo Konzerte sind für Organisten (egal ob an der Hammond oder einer klassischen Orgel) immer eine besondere Herausforderung, da sie mit der Auswahl der Register den Klang entsprechend orchestrieren, variieren und gleichzeitig die Kompositionen nicht aus dem Augen verlieren dürfen. Diesen Spagat zu meistern und, dass es den Hörer dann auch noch unentwegt mitreißt, ist die eigentliche Kunst des Orgelspiels, die Barbara Dennerlein absolut souverän beherrscht.
