This album was the first of five projects in which pianist Oscar Peterson dueted with a trumpeter. Now reissued on CD, the encounter finds Dizzy Gillespie (then 57) in good form for the period, interacting with Peterson on such pieces as "Caravan," "Autumn Leaves," "Blues for Bird" and two of Gillespie's originals that have become standards: "Dizzy Atmosphere" and "Con Alma." It's a worthy acquisition for fans of Peterson and Gillespie. ~ Scott Yanow

At the Grammy Awards of 1976, Gillespie won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance by a Soloist for his performance on this album.

Classical violinist Itzhak Perlman is not a jazz improviser so this meeting with the Oscar Peterson Quartet is more a loving tribute to the melodies ( ten veteran standards plus two Peterson originals ) than a strong jazz date. While Perlman sticks closely to the themes, one's attention focuses much more on Peterson who had suffered a serious stroke a few years earlier and had been inactive ever since. Peterson sounds healthy in his supportive role and, although it is doubtful if he sweated much during this relaxed music, his apparent comeback is great news. Guitarist Herb Ellis has the most rewarding solos ( although his spots are short ) but overall this is a so-so effort. It's better to acquire Oscar Peterson's earlier records. ---Scott Yanow, AMG

Joining them is a trio of talented musicians - guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Grady Tate sharing their wealth of experience in their respective craft to bring to the listeners an innovative and enjoyable listening adventure.

The charms of these melodies are enhanced by the way Perlman plays his sweepingly beautiful violin. 'Yours Is My Heart Alone' completely captivated my ears. It is adapted from a classical piece 'Dein Ist Mein Ganzes Herz' composed by Franz Lehár from the operetta 'The Land of Smiles.' It's one of my most magical listening moments. While 'Misty' has that tranquil beauty that will penetrate your heart and soul, 'Blue Skies' is all jazzed-up, it will put a smile on your face and will add spark to your listening experience. The interplay between Peterson and Perlman in 'I Loves You Porgy' is so enchanting. They allow each other to have their own shining moments. I've never thought a piano and a violin will produce an utterly entrancing sound. Piano and violin combination is a sheer delight. I can imagine George Gershwin listening to this gorgeous piece with a big smile on his face.

Fans of Peterson and Perlman should not miss out on this recording. What makes this album so special to me is that two of my all-time favorite melodies which are seldom recorded are here, 'Dark Eyes' and 'Yours Is My Heart Alone.' My ears are grateful and blissful! Part of his five sessions that featured duets with different trumpeters, pianist Oscar Peterson's matchup with trumpeter Roy Eldridge (reissued on CD) has its strong moments. Eldridge did not quite have the range of his earlier years, but his competitive streak had not mellowed with age. Peterson pushes Eldridge to his limit and the music is generally quite exciting. A Summer Night in Munich captures Oscar Peterson and his "NATO quartet" in a triumphant concert performance recorded July 22, 1998 at the Munchen Philharmonika. With a program of seven Peterson originals plus the Ellington-Strayhorn standard, "Satin Doll," this group cooks. "Backyard Blues" and "Nigerian Marketplace" are especially exciting and contemporary-sounding originals, while "When Summer Comes," "Evening Song" and "Love Ballade" are beautiful ballads. Bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen lays down the nimble-fingered lines for which he is known, while guitarist Ulf Wakenius is a most complementary figure in dialogue with the leader. Drummer Martin Drew keeps the proceedings on track rhythmically, taking a tasty solo turn on the set closer, "Sushi." The artist in autumn: This eminently agreeable session captures the old master in performance at the Munich Philharmonic. Illness, which he has thankfully triumphed over, has seemingly slowed his ardor and lent an understandable melancholy to his artistry, but Oscar Peterson is an indomitable spirit that refuses to knuckle under to the ravages of time. At this point he is no longer the restless globetrotter; rather he's the grand master who carefully picks and chooses-at one of jazz music's largest fee demands-his spots. Still at the helm of a virtuosic trio that is rounded out by Danish bass giant Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson and British drummer Martin Drew, for this occasion they engaged the considerable talents of Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius.

The program is largely composed of Peterson originals, including the gorgeous lattice-work of the wistful and lyrical "When Summer Comes," which elicits a most delicate bass solo from Pederson. The comely melody "Nigerian Marketplace" suggests the optimism of the place more than its bustling activity, and Ellington is feted with a sumptuous "Satin Doll." This four-disc box set features the historic reunion of the Oscar Peterson Trio (Peterson, bassist Ray Brown, and guitarist Herb Ellis), who were playing together for all practical purposes for the first time in over 30 years at the Blue Note in March 16-18, 1990. Drummer Bobby Durham -- who had played with Peterson's band from 1967-1970 -- augments the lineup, making this nothing less than a stellar quartet. For the first time, the four albums taped on these nights have been issued together and they include The Legendary Oscar Peterson Trio Live at the Blue Note, Saturday Night at the Blue Note, Last Call at the Blue Note, and Encore at the Blue Note. The box has been specially priced and sells for the price of a two-disc set. Musically speaking, this is Peterson at his peak, and his sidemen, all into their sixties at the time of these dates, just plain shine. These dates were recorded before Peterson's hip replacement surgery or his stroke, unlike the 1993 recordings at the same venue. What shows here is not only experience but swagger, strut, grit, and the finesse only master jazzmen can muster. Whether it's the burning "Honeysuckle Rose," with killer counterpoint between Peterson and Ellis, the understated ostinato in the medley of "Love Ballad/If You Only Knew" that shifts into a shimmering exercise in harmonic extension and rhythmic invention, or in the fresh, insightful, and eye-opening readings of standards such as "Billie's Bounce" or "I Wished on the Moon," the effect is the same: electrifying. This is one of the slickest, most cosmopolitan Jazz albums ever. There is a lush orchestra arranged by Claus Ogerman, that leaves enough room for Peterson's improvisations and manages to actually compliment his dynamic style. Ogerman was originally from Munich, before he started to work as an arranger for stars like Frank Sinatra, Antonio Carlos Jobim and recently Diana Krall. In 1969 he arranged this album for Oscar Peterson called, which originally came out on MPS, a label located in Villingen, a small town in the German backwoods of the Black Forrest. ---amazon.com

Tom Jobim and Wes Montgomery were having considerable success with the help of arranger Claus Orgerman, so you can't blame Oscar Peterson for wanting to record with him too. The jazz pianist tackles 1960s hits (the usual suspects: the Beatles, Bacharach and Mancini) as Ogerman's lush easy listening charts flows around him. You'll love this. I was leery of what sounded to be too good to be true, but it appears to be so.

This is a lot of early 50's Oscar trio (Barney Kessel/ Herb Ellis on guitar) playing songbook standards for Norman Granz. Also included is one full disc of Billie Holiday material from 1952 and 1954 that I hadn't run into before. Disc 8 has the material from the verve album Diz and Getz, and a session with Lester Young from Nov, '52 that was new to me.

The sound quality is very good, in fact much more pleasing to my ear than the Rudy Van Gelder remastered releases. I doubt they had studio tapes to work with but this sounds clean and relativly bright for early 50's material.

Packaging is pleasant and efficient (cardboard box/individual printed sleeves). The Cd's are packed, with the ones I've so far sampled containing two full albums each.

If you're a hard bop or free jazz guy, this will leave you cold. If you're here and like this sort of small session music from the early 50's, this is pretty good stuff -- and at [...], reasonably priced. --- Michael in Sac, amazon.com

These early "songbooks" didn't actually have "songbook" or "song book" in the title, just Oscar Peterson Plays [insert composer's name]. When nine of the composers (all but Vincent Youmans for some reason) were rerecorded in stereo in 1959 with OP's new trio, which had drums instead of guitar, they were actually called "Song Book" in the title. --- organissimo.org
