Antonio Carlos Jobim - Guitar, Piano, Primary Artist, Vocals

As a celebration of "Tom" Jobim's 60th birthday in 1987, a Brazilian consort simply called the Organization sponsored an album that anthologized his output as a composer. Jobim made the final choices of 24 tunes, recorded them with his band of family and friends, and the results were released privately in a limited edition. Recorded at around the same time as Passarim, it's possible that Jobim did not want this retrospective to compete with his new material. Not until 1995 did the Brazilian arm of BMG put out a commercial edition of this project in a very handsome two-CD box with a beautifully illustrated 38-page color booklet (alas, the contents could have been easily squeezed onto only one CD). It's far from a casual project, obviously carefully rehearsed and polished; rather it's an intimate one, using a minimum of resources, backed only by Jobim's simply-stated piano on several tracks. There is the expected quota of greatest hits like "Desafinado," "One Note Samba," "Chega de Saudades," and "Wave," yet the bulk of the material is not very familiar, often dispatched in to-the-point slices that sometimes clock in at less than two minutes. Jobim also takes a personal flyer by including his countryman Heitor Villa-Lobos' haunting "Seresta No. 5," with just himself on piano backing Danilo Caymmi's vocal, followed by his own "Modinha." Jaques Morelenbaum provides the occasional string arrangements and cello solos, again keeping things uncluttered and decidedly less ambitious than Claus Ogerman's charts on a previous Jobim retrospective, Terra Brasilis. Sometimes the arrangements are unpredictable; "The Girl From Ipanema" omits the words of the first chorus, picking up the thread on the bridge, and the stunning "Estrada do Sol" shifts gears several times. The feeling of saudade is very much front and center on Jobim's birthday present to himself -- he later said that this was his favorite album -- and all of his connoisseurs should try to hunt it down in the import bins.

Antonio Carlos Jobim is to Brazilian music what Duke Ellington is to American jazz—an innovative, prolific, and sublime pianist /songwriter whose art has come to symbolize a certain time and place. Influenced as much by the cool sounds of '50s West Coast jazz as by the melodies of Claude Debussy and the rhythms of the Brazilian samba, Jobim wrote the songs that, when performed by the likes of Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto, drove the global bossa nova craze of the'60s. A subtle pianist and guitarist with a soft gravelly voice and a penchant for writing seductive melodies, Jobim always lived in the shadows of those who covered his songs and turned them into hits. While it was Jobim's "Desafinado" that first put bossa nova on the map in 1962 (when Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd scored a surprise hit covering the song), the man behind the music lived in relative obscurity until he was "rediscovered" shortly before his death in the mid-'90s.

By 1970, the year Jobim recorded Stone Flower, the music industry had already succeeded in destroying the public's appetite for bossa nova by oversaturating the market with schlocky albums recorded by fading musicians intent on reviving their careers with a little Brazilian spice. These mass-produced, superficially bossa nova albums were typically formulaic and contrived, generating a garbage glut which all but guaranteed that Jobim's sophisticated Stone Flower would wilt outside the limelight. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and produced by Creed Taylor, this understated Jobim masterpiece brought back all of the hushful elegance and simmering beauty that had originally defined the bossa nova sound. Far from a conventional bossa nova album, Stone Flower was ambitious and original, infused with all of Jobim's creativity and tender soulfulness. The opening track, "Tereza My Love," establishes the lush mood of the album, with a gently strummed acoustic guitar playing out a bossa nova rhythm as Jobim adds meditative touches of piano. The delicate yet complex string, wind, and horn arrangements of Deodato float sensuously over the smouldering rhythms of bassist Ron Carter, drummer Joao Palma, and percussionists Airto Moreira and Everaldo Ferreira. "Children's Games" and "Brazil" draw out the feeling, as Jobim's electric and acoustic piano melodies glide with minimalist grace. The music is moody and cinematic, conjuring up vivid equatorial landscapes of green and blue, sand swept paradises of the mind, imaginary vistas to absorb as the album plays. More of a unified suite than a collection of individual songs, Stone Flower provided Jobim with no radio hits because it had none to yield (although Carlos Santana would later cover "Stone Flower" on his Top Ten album, Caravanserai). The album is a cohesive whole, unfolding song by song, gradually filling the listener with its dreamy vibe. And because mood is everything, there are surprisingly few solos taken, despite the presence of such major jazz talents as Joe Farrell on soprano sax and Hubert Laws on flute. These musicians play with uncharacteristic restraint, stepping out occasionally to punctuate the music with just the right color and shading.

Simply put, Stone Flower is a lush, deceptively simple, late-night Jobim classic. It is the perfect soundtrack for escaping into your own mental oasis. - John Ballon, musthear.com

Urubu is the album that MCA's Jobim probably aspired to be, a total break away from the bossa nova past that is both ambitious and strikingly original. The shock of dissonant strings, percussive and wind sounds from the Brazilian interior greet us on the first track "Bôto," the first of four songs in which a defiant Jobim throws structural complexities at us and sings in Portuguese only. The second four tracks are an even more radical departure; all are classical orchestral pieces, melancholy and even anguished in tone, owing little or nothing to anyone, streaked with imaginative, even avant-garde orchestral touches from Claus Ogerman. Clearly we are not on the Ipanema beach anymore, and although this may be rough going for jazz-minded Jobim fans, the pay-off is a glimpse into the depths of Jobim's soul. ---Richard S. Antonio Carlos Jobim's entry in the exhaustive VERVE JAZZ MASTERS set of historical reissues is one of the best single-disc Jobim anthologies available. It's not got much in the way of historical range, since it stops in the mid-'60s, just before Jobim left Verve for Reprise and then A&M. However, since Jobim's Verve years were, in the minds of many, his career highpoint, VERVE JAZZ MASTERS 13 distills the best of his most artistically and commercially successful period. Nearly all of Jobim's greatest songs are here in their definitive versions, and the whole is sequenced thoughtfully, so that the disc has a logical and delightful flow. This is magnificent stuff, as well as being the birth of bossa nova. ---Rovi

On Jobim's second A&M album, Eumir Deodato takes over the chart-making tasks, and the difference between him and Claus Ogerman is quite apparent in the remake of "The Girl From Ipanema": the charts are heavier, more dramatic, and structured. Sometimes the arrangements roll back so one can hear, say, the dancing multi-phonic flute of wildman Hermeto Pascoal on "Tema Jazz," and the rhythms often veer away from the familiar ticking of the bossa nova. Jobim is his usual understated self, adding very subtle electric piano to his arsenal of acoustic piano and guitar, but the material sometimes falls short of Jobim's tip-top level (dead giveaway: "Tide" is a clever rewrite on the chord changes of "Wave"). Still, it's beautifully made and very musical at all times. --- Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

Wave is the third album by Antonio Carlos Jobim. It was released on 1967. It is known as Jobim's most successful album to date. Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim (January 25, 1927 in Rio de Janeiro – December 8, 1994 in New York), also known as Tom Jobim, was a Brazilian songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist/guitarist. A primary force behind the creation of the bossa nova style, his songs have been performed by many singers and instrumentalists within Brazil and internationally.

Jobim i Vinicius de Moraes stworzyli muzykę do brazylijskiego filmu Czarny Orfeusz (1959). Wydana w roku 1959 płyta João Gilberto Chega de Saudade osiągnęła zaskakujący komercyjny sukces i na stałe weszła do kanonu nowego stylu. Już wkrótce bossa nova, z początku modna tylko w Brazylii, zyskała dużą popularność w Stanach Zjednoczonych, głównie dzięki kompozycjom Jobima w wykonaniu Stana Getza i Charlie Byrda. Nowy styl, a wraz z nim sława Jobima, szybko rozprzestrzenił się w obu Amerykach, czego dowodem były nagrania i koncerty brazylijskiego kompozytora z ówczesnymi wybitnymi jazzmanami, m.in. Dizzym Gillespiem. Muzyka stworzona przez Jobima stała się inspiracją dla wielu artystów, nie tylko z kręgu jazzu.

Pieced together from various albums to showcase what a remarkably consistent songwriter and performer Antonio Carlos Jobim was, Hip-O's 20th Century Masters - The Best of Antonio Carlos Jobim opens with two of Jobim's compositions from Stan Getz and João Gilberto's quintessential bossa nova record, Getz/Gilberto, before threading through his own career. With over 12 tracks, many of Jobim's defining songs are covered, from "The Girl from Ipanema" (the song that kick-started the careers of both Jobim and Astrud Gilberto, while also bringing bossa nova to popular consciousness) to "Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)," a song proving that Jobim's talent only grew in emotional depth and complexity over ten years of being in the public eye. Though two-thirds of this collection focuses, rightly so, on his material from the early to mid-'60s, four tracks glimpse at his career in the 1970s and '80s as proof that Jobim's high standards, both as a songwriter and producer, were never forsaken. 20th Century Masters - The Best of Antonio Carlos Jobim proves an excellent set for those casually interested in exploring Jobim's work and the shaping of bossa nova. --- Gregory McIntosh, Rovi

In his first American album, Antonio Carlos Jobim presents a dozen of his songs, each one destined to become a standard -- an astounding batting average. Jobim, who claimed to have been out of practice at the time of the session, merely plays single notes on the piano with one hand, punctuated by chords now and then, sticking to his long, undulating melodies with a few passages of jazz improvisation now and then. Yet it is a lovely idea, not a gesture is wasted. Arranger Claus Ogerman unveils many of the trademarks that would define his Creed Taylor-produced albums with Jobim -- the soaring, dying solo flute and spare, brooding unison string lines widening into lush harmony; flutes doubling on top of Jobim's piano chords -- again with an exquisitely spare touch. The songs include "Desafinado," "Corcovado," "Chega de Saudade" (No More Blues), "The Girl From Ipanema," "Meditation," "One Note Samba," and half-a-dozen others (every one of which is included on The Man From Ipanema set). --- Richard S.
