Blessed with good looks, a powerful voice, and a gift for communicating with an audience, Julio Iglesias is one of the most popular and enduring figures in the history of Latin music, a true international superstar who has sold over 300 million albums worldwide and remains a popular concert draw and chart-topping recording artist in a career that has spanned six decades. Julio José Iglesias de la Cueva was born in Madrid, Spain, on September 23, 1943. Julio's father was a successful physician, and his son's initial career ambition was to become a lawyer and a diplomat. Young Iglesias was also a gifted football player, and as a teenager he achieved one of his great dreams when he was recruited to play goaltender with his favorite team, Real Madrid. However, Iglesias' athletic career was cut short in 1962 by an auto accident that left him with a spinal injury that kept him in bed for nearly two years. As Iglesias recovered, he taught himself to play guitar, and began writing songs as he discovered his passion for music.

While Iglesias would return to his legal studies in Great Britain, he was still interested in music, and in 1968, Iglesias entered a song he'd composed, "La Vida Sigue Igual" (Life Goes On) in the Benidorm International Song Festival, an annual Spanish songwriting competition. Iglesias' song won first prize, and he was offered a recording contract with the Spanish branch of Columbia Records. Iglesias' recording of "La Vida Sigue Igual" became a number one hit in Spain, and he set aside his career in law to pursue music full-time. Iglesias released his first full-length album in 1969, he represented Spain in the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest, and by 1971 he'd already sold a million records.

Iglesias had a keen facility for languages, and in 1972 he started recording material in German, Italian, French, and Portuguese as well as Spanish; soon he was one of the most popular musical performers throughout Europe, performing for tens of thousands of fans in most of the world's capitals. In 1976, Iglesias played a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City, though the United States was one of the few countries where he was not yet a household name. In the late '70s, Iglesias signed a new record deal with CBS International that reflected his global popularity, and he set his sights on conquering the English-language markets. After Iglesias' version of "Begin the Beguine" became a hit in the U.K. in 1981, a compilation album, Julio, was released to introduce mainstream American listeners to his music; it included a number in English, "Hey."

Released in 1984, 1100 Bel Air Place belated established Iglesias as a star in the United States; featuring his hit duet with Willie Nelson, "To All The Girls I've Loved Before," the album sold over three million copies and confirmed his status as a truly international icon. In 1985, a Basque terrorist group kidnapped Iglesias' father, but he was located unharmed after two weeks; believing his family would be safer in the United States, the singer relocated to Florida, where he owns an estate in Indian Creek Village, as well as a home in the resort town of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

Through the 1980s and the early '90s, many of Iglesias' recordings were tailored to suit his American fans, often featuring duets with stars ranging from Stevie Wonder to Dolly Parton, but with 1996's Tango, he began renewing his commitment to his Latin audience, and the album went on to win the World Music Award; he also enjoyed a major commercial success in his native Spain with 2003's Divorcio. Iglesias also renewed his relationship with his French followers with a handful of French-language releases, starting with 2004's En Français... and 2005's L'Homme Que Je Suis. While he maintained a busy performing schedule, Iglesias seemed to be slowing down his recording commitments after the release of 2006's Romance Classics, but in 2011, declaring his voice to be as strong as it had been in his youth, he re-recorded a number of his best-known songs for a new collection, titled 1, Vol. 1, which was a major commercial success. ---mark deming, Rovi

From 1995, this is a really gorgeous CD, a velvety musical treat from start to finish. 5 of the 10 songs are written by the team of Roberto Levi and Rafael Ferro, and are beautiful, romantic baladas, with "Baila Morena" a lovely melody with a Carribean taste to it. Other good rythmic tracks are "Derroche", by Manuel Giménez, and my favorite, "Agua Dulce, Agua Salá", by Estéfano, Donato, and Batt.

"Con el pasar de los años~he aprendido en la vida~que se vive intensamente~porque si no se termina" There is also a medley of rumbas that are mighty fine, and a sad song of lost love "Sin Excusas ni Rodeos" which was written by Julio, along with Estéfano, Donato, and Arcusa...the CD finishes with the wonderful Alvarez/Beigbeder "Vuela Alto". Needless to say, the arrangements are lush and the musicianship top notch. The Spanish guitar of Toledo deserves a mention in "La Luna me Engaño".

This CD is like one of those frothy, iced cappuccino drinks I indulge in once in a while...maybe a little sweet, but oh so yummy to the last drop. ---Alekandra vernon, amazon.com

This has 16 tracks from the mid-'80s to the late '90s, but like other installments in Sony's Love Songs series, it's not synonymous with a greatest-hits compilation. Instead, it's just an assortment of various songs from the catalog of one of the most popular romantic vocalists of the late-20th century, though there are of course a whole lot more than 16 "love songs" in the Iglesias discography. These particular ones seem to have been selected with an eye toward the North American market, as all are in English, and the program's heavy on covers of era-spanning pop standards: "Mona Lisa," "Can't Help Falling in Love," "When I Fall in Love," "As Time Goes By," the Willie Nelson-penned "Crazy" (popularized by Patsy Cline), Don McLean's "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)," the Beatles' "And I Love Her," Morris Albert's "Feelings," Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen's "If You Go Away." It does have some of his big American hits in "To All the Girls I've Loved Before" (a duet with Willie Nelson) and "Moonlight Love," yet it's missing his smash duet with Diana Ross, "All of You." Overall, it's representative of the glossily produced, sentimental adult contemporary pop for which the singer's most known to much of the English-speaking audience. ---Richie Unterberger, Rovi

Fantastic!! ... the incomparable enchanting voice of Julio Eglesias. I love Latin music and Julio combines his angelic tenor voice with other Mexican masters on this MASTERPIECE. The mood captures us from the first downbeat and you just know it will be a fantastic journey. The entire album features Mexican artists in duet, and all are new recordings it seems (but I could be wrong). The beat is totally infectious; that turns on your happy dancing feet as you pick up the soft drift of the beautiful melodies and swinging in bare feet through your music fantasy with Julio. Now that would be a dream fantasy!! And if your man is tired and worn out, it is a beautiful romantic dinner album to kindle the night flames of love over escargot soaked in garlic butter and a few appertifs.

I recall falling totally in love with Julio's first big NA album, Bel Air Place. I listened and danced to it with my love until it was worn out. Living in Canada in winter, ii was a journey into the rapture of California fantasy, soft love, and passion. Unfortunately as time goes by Julio has been a bit forgotten in NA I think, complimented by his talented son Enrico, among the younger generation. But Julio is the father of the son, and make no mistake, he still in King of the Spanish Balladeros. It is wonderful music. Search out his legendary career. Enjoy the fine music for lovers and those who dream of compassion and romance, the essence of our private life and happiness!!. ---Kristina, amazon.com

The acknowledged king of adult contemporary offers up a CD that is chock-full of feel-good ballads. Whether he's covering Sting or Santana, Iglesias manages to deliver the material with the perfect combination of sentiment and showmanship. Some songs, such as "Crazy," the ballad originally made famous by Patsy Cline, are a little bit too gooey, but others, such as a beautifully arranged version of "Mammy Blue," are just gooey enough. The album is not short on guest stars; Dolly Parton's vocals soar on the duet "When You Tell Me That You Love Me." For the contemporary version of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy," the entire London Symphony Orchestra along with the Ambrosian Singers provide a rousing, festive counterpoint to Iglesias' laid-back lead vocals.

There is only one song where collaboration doesn't work perfectly: On the cover of Sting's "Fragile," the writer himself performs lead guitar and backing vocals, making the track sound oddly like a karaoke version with an extremely good studio singer. Overall this album is difficult to fault, though. It is beautifully scored, easily accessible to any listener, and performed to perfection in Iglesias' inimitable style. It's liable to sound familiar from the first time you listen to it; and indeed, even if you haven't heard the CD in its entirety before, you've probably heard most of the tracks on a commercial, a radio station, or a compilation of romantic fireside songs. --- L. Arriving in 1996 after several years of alternating English-language adult contemporary pop albums with contemporary Latin pop albums, Tango was a back to basics move of sorts for Julio Iglesias. Back to basics might be stretching it a little, because Iglesias always was a contemporary pop singer, so this was more of a roots move, finding Iglesias tackling 12 of the most famous tangos, many of which date back to the '30s and '40s, if not earlier. If the production did not exactly sound timeless -- it was a contemporary big-budget recording, so it was very clean and polished -- it nevertheless wasn't nearly as slick as his English language records, and the execution of these tangos modernized these classic songs, bringing them to new audiences. Iglesias responded in kind, giving them some of his most passionate performances in years, and the result was one of the highlights of his '90s work. [In 2006, Tango was reissued by Columbia/Legacy in remastered sound with new liner notes.] ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
