Merkfolk powstał na początku 2013 roku z inicjatywy rodzeństwa – Irminy i Rafała. Od listopada 2013 zespół regularnie koncertuje. Występowali, między innymi, na Ogólnopolskich Zlotach Miłośników Folk Metalu, Ragnard Rock Festiwal (Francja), Kalevala Polish Tour, Hellhammer Festiwal (Czechy). Mieli okazję grać na jednej scenie z Percivalem Schuttenbachem, Kalevalą, Welicorussem, Arkoną, Primordialem, Nokturnal Mortum, Wardruną, Skiltronem, The Moon and the Night Spirit, Nine Treasures i innymi.

Nazwa zespołu, w luźnym tłumaczeniu (z norweskiego), oznacza "niosący folk". Utwory Merkfolk to wpadające w ucho melodie, grane przez akordeon i skrzypce oraz ciężkie brzmienie gitar i perkusji, okraszone kobiecym growlem.

W październiku 2014 r. miał premierę pierwszy teledysk Merkfolk do utworu „Topielica”. W lipcu 2015 r. zespół wydał, nakładem wytwórni Art of the Night Productions, swoją pierwszą płytę LP pt. "The folk bringer".

W grudniu 2015 r. Folk-metal.nl uznało płytę „The folk bringer” debiutanckim albumem roku. Merkfolk jest laureatem kilku nagród, między innymi przeglądu kapel na Cieszanów Rock Festiwal 2016. W lipcu 2018 zespół wydał drugą płytę LP zatytułowaną “Kolovrat”. ---band.pl/merkfolk

Three years after their debut The Folk Bringer Polish Merkfolk release their second full album. Expectations are high, because their firstborn was voted debut of the year by our team. More often than not a band would sound more mature in the way of song writing, sound and diversity. Is that the case with Merkfolk?

Well, that’s open for debate. Most of the strong points of the debut are back on Kolovrat. Which is a distinct sound, good song writing (though not better than on The Folk Bringer), accordion, violin and raw female vocals. However, from a different singer. Current singer Agata Tutkaj is sadly not as convincing as Mery was. Less variety, in fact very monotone and harsh to the point of core vocals. Not an improvement at all. Which really is a shame, because apart from that, there is not a whole lot amiss with this album. It is a bit more mid-tempo, but that’s not a bad choice in itself as long as the songs keep you interested. And mostly they do.

Still a faster song like ‘Woi, Kupala!’ is more likely to get the party started. A song with moderate speed that is typical for this album would be ‘Plony’. Mind you, ‘Plony’ ending with a ‘y’ instead of first song ‘Plonie’. Polish humour, maybe? This song is typical in another way, namely that towards the end of the song you wish Agata would stop shouting in your face all the time.

Other than that, enough to enjoy. The band specializes in writing a gripping first minute in most every song. Often resulting in a nice enough song. Yet seldom better than the songs on the debut album. After listening to Kolovrat for multiple times I accidently heard ‘Nananana’ from the debut album. And it immediately made me smile, whereas I was somewhat frowning throughout Kolovrat. If this would have been the band’s debut, I probably would be a lot more enthusiastic. It still is above average. But with a debut like The Folk Bringer this album can’t possibly score higher than an eight out of ten. ---folk-metal.nl

Co gra MERKFOLK? Ano jest to stosunkowo młody twór na naszej rodzimej scenie. Zresztą, sama scena, a jest to folk metal, to również materia która się ciągle rodzi i powoli rozwija, a ten band, to jak dla mnie, jaśniejszy punkt w owej tematyce. Domyślam się, iż połączenie folku i metalu, to ciągle dla jakiejś tam części metalowej braci, powód do niestrawności, bo czasem tradycja nie pozwala, czasem uwiera gorsecik obyczajowy a innym razem, nie sposób się otworzyć, kiedy kajdany konwenansów wrzynają się w głąb własnego ja. Sam może i wielkim fanem takiej stylistyki nie jestem, ale co dobre docenić potrafię i oddać co się należy również. A MERKFOLK’owi słowa uznania się należą. „The Folk Bringer” to świetny debiut, po odsłuchaniu którego wiedziałem, że na kolejny raz nie trzeba będzie mnie długo prosić.

Czternaście utworów (w tym fajne intro i outro) metalowego grania z kobiecym wokalem jakże cudnie growlującym, i oblanych ludową, czy po prostu ogólnie folkową estetyką. Płyta jest mocno zróżnicowana, nie jest jakoś szczególnie skalkulowana według jakichś matematycznych wzorców, że ma być tyle i tyle metalu, a tyle i tyle folku w folku. I bardzo dobrze, bo czyni to ten album atrakcyjniejszym dla ucha. I tak mamy tu świetne, uzbrojone w twarde pazury wałki jak „The Song of the Possessed”, gdzie sekcja rytmiczno-gitarowa wycina takie cuda, że miło posłuchać, a jak dorzucimy do tego wyplute trzewia Mery z wplecioną w ramy tego songa resztą instrumentarium, mamy kapitalny wałek. A takich jest tu więcej.

Oczywiście, metal to jeden z elementów ich układanki, a i folk ma na tym krążku swoich również skądinąd udanych reprezentantów. Dajmy na to przykład „Meadows and Fields”, „Postrzyżyny” czy „Wiła”. Z tym ostatnim utworem, przy pierwszym styku przyznam, iż można mieć delikatną spinkę, bo wstępniak sprawia lekko przaśne wrażenie, ale potem jest już tylko lepiej, i gdyby na „The Folk Bringer” zabrakło tej piosenki, to tak jakby urwać coś z naturalności tego materiału. Zresztą, „wiła” rewelacyjnie sprawdza się na koncertach. Wiem, bo widziałem. Aaa, no całkiem fajna przeróbka utworu „Vodka” Finów z KORPIKLAANI tu w postaci numeru „Weselisko”.

Jest klimatycznie, czasem z melancholijnym wydźwiękiem, melodyjnie, ale niekiedy chciałoby się powiedzieć, że i całkiem jakby death metalowo się robi (oczywiście takie urywki nie podejmują tematu w bardziej rozciągniętej formie), w tej bardziej zadziornej części ich grania. Takie moje spektrum, a przynajmniej ja to tak odbieram. Metalową część instrumentarium uzupełniają tu akordeon, którego brzmienie tu obecne również jest pewnym plusem i skrzypki już zdecydowanie częściej wykorzystywane na takim, muzycznym poletku. Zresztą, oba te instrumenty jakby się głębiej zastanowić, w ogólnym koncepcie są taką klamrą trzymającą całość w kupie. Z pomysłem, z dobrym brzmieniem i kawałkiem uczciwej muzy. A więc, niech niosą ten swój folk dalej. Panie i Panowie, luzujemy paski w spodniach dla swobodniejszego oddechu, bo jest na czym ucho zawiesić. ---Skowron, metalcentre.pl

Merkfolk from Poland have read the book of Folk Metal very well. It’s hard to believe this is their debut album. Everything is done so well. And the band has it’s own specific signature. Not only singing in their mother language (most of ‘em do), a prominent place for violin (not so special) and accordion (much less common) but harsh female vocals too (not very often heard in the scene). It all blends together very harmoniously. And there’s more. The songs stick in your head after you’ve listened to them only two times. And yet they are not boring if you listen to them another ten times. That a sign of good songwriting.

The pace is mostly up-tempo, but there is room enough for a little rest. The instruments are well played and the harsh vocals are sometimes replaced by or accompanied by clean female and male vocals. Aggressiveness and calm go fluently hand in hand. Have I said I like this album yet?

Let’s take a closer look at some of the songs. ‘Nananana’ and ‘WIla’ both are perfect examples of the stick-in-your-head- category.

‘Topielica’ is a bit less aggressive, check their video to understand what Merfolk is about.

‘Instrumental’ is … well, instrumental as you might have guessed. As far as I am concerned not the most interesting song, but during a live show probably a nice quiet moment.

‘Weseliko’: a short up-tempo party song. Reminds me of Korpiklaani’s Wodka.

In ‘Meadows and Fields’ the accordion and violin steal the show.

The song ‘Merfolk’ is almost a ballad. Not my favourite, to be honest. If I would name a song after my band, I would like it to be a typical song, so that people know what my band stands for.

One of the great things about this album is that even the slightly less interesting songs are still good and nice to listen to. When the band is playing such a song, you are going to get a beer and join the singing and dancing during the next song. Most songs are between three and four and a half minutes. A perfect length to keep your attention. Also because in every song there’s enough going on, with all the different instruments and vocals. A very nice debut album indeed. ---Rein, folk-metal.nl
