Boney M.'s follow-up to their 1976 success Take the Heat Off Me closely adheres to the formula established by that album: a combination of original songs and offbeat cover versions done in a style that marries bubblegum pop hooks to a disco beat. Like its predecessor, Love for Sale also scored some notable international hits: "Ma Baker" is a colorful gangster story that boasts a stuttered vocal hook guaranteed to stick in the listener's head, and "Belfast" is an up-tempo dancefloor stormer that works some surprisingly heavy sounding power chords into the group's slick dancefloor sound. Frank Farian's slick, lush production ensures that the album is a slick piece of ear candy from start to finish. However, the album tracks are not as consistent this time out: the cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" benefits from an effective rhythm guitar hook but the up-tempo arrangement robs the song of its emotional power, and "Gloria Can You Waddle," while catchy, is little more than a rewrite of the group's early European hit "Baby Do You Wanna Bump." With these criticisms in mind, the album still offers enough strong tracks to please Boney M.'s fan base. The most interesting of these is a ballad style cover of the Yardbirds' "Still I'm Sad," which transforms this rock song into an effective mood piece dominated by the group's Gregorian chant-like humming. In short, Love for Sale is a solid listen for Boney M. fans, but casual listeners who just want the hits should probably opt for one of the group's compilations. ---Donald A. Guarisco, Rovi

By the time Oceans of Fantasy was released in 1979, Boney M. had become a worldwide sensation thanks to Frank Farian's canny combination of bubblegum-ish pop hooks with slick disco-minded production. Oceans of Fantasy continues very much in this vein: "Gotta Go Home" mixes a wordless singalong hook, an insistent dance beat, and some exotic steel drumwork to create a reggae-styled slice of bubblegum disco, while "Bye Bye Bluebird" transforms what could have been a ballad into a bouncy pop tune by raising the tempo and adding an elastic bassline. It also boasts one of the group's finest hits in "El Lute," the sentimental tale of a freedom-fighting Spanish outlaw that is reminiscent of the ABBA classic "Fernando." However, not all the songs on Oceans of Fantasy live up to this high standard of quality: the title track boasts a lush arrangement but lacks the insistent hooks that would bring it to life, and "Bahama Mama" is cloyingly cutesy even by Boney M. standards. Another problem with the album is that its 52-minute running time is simply too long: Boney M.'s effervescent sound is the kind of music that is most effective when delivered in a short dose, and some judicious pruning of the song list could have resulted in a more consistent and engaging album. With those criticisms in mind, Oceans of Fantasy still offers enough solid dance-pop to keep the group's fans happy. ---Donald A. Guarisco, Rovi

Boney M.'s 1976 debut LP is a very well-crafted album. It opens with the sensational "Daddy Cool" which was the first 'real' Boney M. single, full of gimmicks, opening with Farian playing his teeth with a pen, as well as 'tick-tocking' orally. Producer Frank Farian's deep-voiced male part is answered back with fresh female vocals by Liz Mitchell & Marcia Barrett, and the driving beat, the simple and memorable lyrics and the catchy chorus proved the perfect combination for a hit! The second single off the album was a beautiful up-tempo cover version of "Sunny" in the typical Boney M sound with the two voices of Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett perfectly blending together and Liz Mitchell singing in a charming way the solo partitures of the song.

Marcia Barrett takes her share of the lead vocals on two tracks that were in fact remixes of two songs that Farian had recorded the previous year in German with Gilla. Marcia, however, oozes with cool elegance on "Take the Heat off Me", whereas she really blasts off the roof on the closing track "Lovin' Or Leavin'", which is a storm of a song, a real funky powerhouse. An over-long version of the 1975 debut single "Baby Do You Wanna Bump? (Part I & II)" (with choir vocal overdubs by Liz & Marcia) closes side 1 but falls below the standard of the remaining titles. Farian had to remove this track off the albums distributed by Warner Bros. (the UK, the USA/Canada, Japan) since the single had been released by different labels, Creole Records in the UK and MAI Records in the US. Instead he included "Help Help", an extended remix of Gilla's hit single of the same name, including only Farian's falsetto and deep vocals. A re-make of one of Farian's own songs "Am Samstagabend" was turned into the incredibly charming reggae title "Got a Man on My Mind", lovingly sung by Liz Mitchell, who also takes the lead vocal on the two remaining cover versions: the sultry "Fever" and Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry" which remains one of the most popular Boney M. tunes to this day.

Nightflight to Venus is the third album by the band Boney M, and was released in July 1978. The album became a major success in continental Europe, Scandinavia, and Canada, topping most of the album charts during the second half of 1978 and also became their first UK number one album. Nightflight to Venus includes their worldwide hits "Rivers of Babylon" and "Brown Girl in the Ring", a double A-sided single that topped the UK singles chart and sold close to 2 million copies there. The follow-up was another Boney M. classic, "Rasputin", in most countries also a double A-side coupled with "Painter Man", a cover of a 1966 hit by the band The Creation. In the UK, "Rasputin" and "Painter Man" were released separately as A-sides by Atlantic Records, both reaching the Top 10. Nightflight to Venus also became Boney M.'s most well received album in the United States, peaking at #134 on The Billboard 200. "Rivers of Babylon" which peaked at #30 on The Billboard Hot 100 became their biggest US hit.

In Europe and most other parts of the world the album was followed in November 1978 by Christmas single "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord" backed with "Dancing In The Streets", another chart topper - selling over 1.75 million copies in the UK alone. Upon its original 1978 release, these two tracks did not appear on Nightflight to Venus, but they were included on the 2007 CD reissue.

There were four different pressings of the original Hansa Records vinyl LP, all with slightly altered edits of the tracks. The most significant difference was the length of the title track "Nightflight to Venus". On the very first German pressing it was 7:09 minutes, making the segued medley with the also extended "Rasputin" 13:48 in total, the second pressing 5:55, the third 4:58 and the final and also the one appearing on the UK and US editions 4:46. The timings given here are those of the 1994 and 2007 CD re-issues.
