Soul singer and record producer Barry White is known to some as 'The Love Walrus', thanks to his romantic records and corpulent size. He's sold around 50 million records and developed a reputation for sultry grooves and his distinctive voice, lower and deeper than any similar singer.

As a record producer he nurtured the Love Unlimited Orchestra, and eventually swapped the mixing desk for the microphone when he couldn't find an appropriate male singer for one of their songs. He launched a solo career and continued to work with the Orchestra, writing and producing for them, and occasionally singing. One of his compositions was "Love's Theme", which was a No.1 pop hit in 1974. Not only was it one of the first ever instrumentals to top the charts, it was also one of the very first disco hits. White's solo hits included: "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby" (pop No.3 in 1973), "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up" and "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" (pop No.7 and No.1 in 1974), "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" (pop No.2, No.1 in the UK in 1975), and "You See the Trouble with Me" (UK No.2 in 1976).

Barry White died of renal failure in July 2003, he was 58. ---amazon.com

Barry White's brand of sensual orchestral seventies soul is sorely missed. We can do with a bit of old-fashioned sensuality on radio these days. This love song collection includes all his work (Did he do anything but love songs?) His greatest hits from that melody-friendly decade are all here: Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More and the sublime You're The First, The Last, My Everything. I always liked his understated version of Just The Way You Are much more than Billy Joel's overwrought emoting on the original, and Never Never Gonna Give You Up is still as delicious now as it was back then. There's not a bad track on Love Songs and many classics, like It May Be Winter Outside (But In My Heart It's Spring) and the two tracks originally credited to the Love Unlimited Orchestra: Love's Theme and Walking In The Rain With The One I Love. Sometimes Barry comes across as a lighter, more romantic Isaac Hayes, the same type of hot-buttered voice and deft instrumentation. 1979's "The Message is Love" was Barry White's first release from his own Unlimited Gold label. The album is a mixture of the 70's White with a stab at moving into the new decade of the 80's. There is a greater dance influence in the first four tracks, but it's on the slower tracks where the singer/songwriter does his best work. "Love Ain't Easy", co-written by White and Paul Politi bears a unmistakeable similarity to White's successful cover of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are." Robert Jason's "I'm on Fire" is, perhaps in praise of White's then-wife Glodean. The best track, entitled "I Found Love", has a mid-tempo beat and is a find for White fans. Beginning with the trademark "rap", the song (that hints at a possible ménage a trois) allows both man and band to "do their thing".

A gem like this one won't be found on a "compilation", and that, for his fans, is a travesty. --- Reginald D. Garrard, amazon.com
