As concept albums go, LeAnn Rimes’ 2011 album Lady & Gentlemen is a good one: a collection of masculine country classics reinterpreted by a female singer. Sometimes, this reinterpretation amounts to little more than swapping a gender -- “The Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line” becomes “The Only Mama That’ll Walk the Line,” Charlotte in John Anderson’s “Swingin'” becomes Charlie -- and some of these songs are standards that have often been sung by either gender (“Help Me Make It Through the Night”), but there are a few songs that do feel slightly different when sung by Rimes, including “A Good Hearted Woman” and “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” neither given a gender switch yet changing slightly with the perspective shift. Generally, though, Lady & Gentlemen isn’t much more than a good straight-ahead covers album, given grit and tradition from co-producers Vince Gill and Darrell Brown, who give John Conlee’s “Rose Colored Glasses” a dusty beer joint kick and Gill’s own “When I Call Your Name” a soulful sway, and transform Merle Haggard’s “Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down” into a slow, spooky crawl, all moves that more than compensate for the too frenetic take on “Swingin'.” Throughout it all, Rimes hits her marks with ease, and the new version of her breakthrough hit “Blue” illustrates just how far she’s come -- how she’s become a stronger, more nuanced singer over the years. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic Review

Remnants is the first album LeAnn Rimes recorded for RCA, and the switch from her longtime home of Curb Records provides the singer an opportunity to redefine herself. So enticing is that opportunity that Rimes winds up trying on every persona she can imagine, a move that means Remnants can seem overstuffed and incoherent but rarely boring. Although this opens up with a dramatic reading of "The Story," a song written by Americana stalwart Brandi Carlile, Rimes isn't refashioning herself as a roots singer by any means. Remnants is the work of a self-styled diva, one who currently is borrowing some moves from Carrie Underwood and Shania Twain. Sometimes, Rimes will flirt with a bit of old-fashioned drama -- "Do It Wrong with Me" is a gospel-inflected showstopper -- but she spends just as much time with deliberate ballads and spangly contemporary soul, something that is a specialty of co-producer Mark Batson. Occasionally, Rimes ties these two sides together, as on the terrific moody groover "Love Line," but usually she keeps her styles separated because that makes it easier to showcase her versatility. Her flexibility impresses but it also means that Rimes doesn't conjure a specific identity on Remnants: she may be able to sing just about anything but the album would've been stronger if it had a greater connective thread than sheer skill. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic Review

LeAnn Rimes is going to heat things up on her new album.

The country star's "Spitfire" is dune June 4 on Curb Records, with Rimes sparking up several collaborations: guitarist Jeff Beck and Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas are featured on "Gasoline & Matches," with Alison Kraus and Dan Tyminsky adding their voices to "What Have I Done?"

Rimes co-wrote nine tracks on the 14-track set, with other credits including co-producer Darrell Brown, Dan Wilson, Missy Higgins and Dean Sheremet -- Rimes' ex-husband.

"I hope I’m saying things that are hard for others to express," Rimes said in a release. "It certainly took me a lot of work to get to this point. And it’s still easier to sing these thoughts than it is to say them out loud. The intimacy in my music is just beginning.” --- billboard.com
