By the time of David Gilmour's solo debut, he had not only established himself several times over as an underrated, powerful guitarist in Pink Floyd, but as a remarkably emotional singer, his soothing approach perfectly suited to such songs as "Wish You Were Here." The self-titled album, recorded with journeyman bassist Rick Wills and Sutherland Brothers drummer Willie Wilson, later to be part of the touring Floyd lineup for its Wall dates, isn't a deathless collection of music in comparison to Gilmour's group heights, but is a reasonably pleasant listen nonetheless. Certainly it's much more approachable than Animals, released earlier that year, eschewing epics for relatively shorter, reflective numbers. While Gilmour wrote the vast majority of the songs himself, the most successful number was co-written with Unicorn member Ken Baker: "There's No Way Out of Here," an agreeably dreamy, wistful song featuring an attractive acoustic slide guitar/harmonica hook. That it sounds a bit like a Pink Floyd outtake certainly doesn't hurt, but one figures Roger Waters would have tried for some heavily barbed lyrics to offset the melancholy. Throughout the album Gilmour sounds like he's having some jamming fun with his compatriots in his own particular blues-meets-the Home Counties style, adding keyboard overdubs here and there (his efforts are passable, but it's understandable why he's known for his guitar work first and foremost). Numbers of note include "Cry From the Street," with its fully rocked-out conclusion, the sweetly sad "So Far Away," one of his best vocal showcases, and the concluding "I Can't Breathe Anymore," capturing the recurrent Pink Floyd theme of isolation quite well. While one would be hard-pressed to hum a memorable melody outside of "There's No Way Out of Here," it's still a good enough experience for those who enjoy his work. ---Ned Raggett, AllMusic Review

Po wydaniu w 1977 roku albumu "Animals" nastroje muzyków Pink Floyd nie były zbyt optymistyczne, co było wynikiem coraz bardziej egoistycznego podejścia Watersa do pracy w zespole. Zarówno Wright jak i Gilmour mieli głowy pełne ciekawych pomysłów, które jednak nie trafiały w perfekcyjne aż do bólu gusta Watersa. Dlatego obaj muzycy postanowili niezależnie nagrać albumy solowe. David Gilmour postanowił cofnąć się do czasu, kiedy był nieznanym muzykiem nie obciążonym presją oczekiwań słuchaczy. Postanowił nagrać album kontrastowy do ostatniego dokonania Pink Floyd - świeży i spontaniczny. Ukazał się 19 maja 1978 roku.

Płytę otwiera nagranie instrumentalne "Mihalis". Tytuł Gilmour wziął od nazwy swej łodzi żaglowej, na której nieraz startował w greckich regatach. Kompozycja ograniczona raczej do zagrania efektownej linii gitary, oprawiona średnio bogatym tłem. "There's No Way Out Of Here" to utwór chyba najbardziej przypominający dokonania Floydów. Chórki kojarzą się zdecydowanie z "The Dark Side Of The Moon". Może to dziwić, ale to jedyna kompozycja na płycie, która nie wyszła spod pióra Gilmoura, powstała za sprawą lidera grupy Unicorn - Kena Bakera. Mamy tu bardzo ciekawe brzmienie gitary, przypominające nieco harmonijkę ustną. "Cry From The Street" - w stylu trochę skręcającym ku muzyce funky, jest kompozycją, w której Gilmour delikatnie starał się oddalić od klimatów floydowskich. Ciężko było, bo jak sam stwierdził: "Gdy przez 10 lat pracuje się w tej samej grupie, jak to jest w moim przypadku, to wszystko, co chciałbym stworzyć sam, zawsze będzie się w jakimś stopniu kojarzyć z tym, co wcześniej zrobiliśmy we czwórkę." "So Far Away" - kompozycja pełna wdzięku, ale jednak wydaje się być zagraną troszkę stereotypowo. Jest poprawnie, ale czegoś tu brakuje. "Short And Sweet" - otwiera drugą stronę albumu (oczywiście tylko w przypadku krążka winylowego). Tutaj w komponowaniu wspomógł Gilmoura Roy Harper - pan, który śpiewał na "Wish You Were Here" utwór "Have A Cigar". Kolejne nagranie instrumentalne - "Raise My Rent" - jest jednym z najpiękniejszych na albumie. W zasadzie jest to długie gitarowe solo, które kojarzyć się może troszkę z "Mudmen" z płyty "Obscured By Clouds", ale czy nie tego właśnie oczekujemy od dobrego gitarzysty? "No Way" to kolejna floydowska klimatem piosenka, choć brak jej może nieco werwy. "It's Deafinitely - trzeci i ostatni instrumentalny utwór. Zagrany ochoczo i z sercem, zabarwiony nieco psychodelią. Zamykający płytę "I Can't Breathe Anymore" wydaje się już samym tytułem nawiązywać do "The Dark Side Of The Moon" i jest jakby odpowiedzią na "Breathe". Tekst traktuje o zagubieniu w życiu, chęci odetchnięcia od zobowiązujących dokonań.

Solowa płyta Davida Gilmoura robi bardzo przyjemne wrażenie. To zbiór ładnych piosenek i kompozycji instrumentalnych, urzekających floydowską atmosferą. Dziewięć bardzo zgrabnie zaaranżowanych równych utworów, bez typowych potknięć. Muzyka bardzo przekonująca, utrzymana w wyciszonym, ale pogodnym nastroju. Polecam wszystkim, którym podoba się to, co Gilmour zrobił i robi w Pink Floyd. Warto dodać, że najlepszy utwór jaki wtedy Gilmour skomponował, postanowił zostawić dla zespołu. Roger Waters zgodzi się za rok umieścić go na "The Wall" jako "Comfortably Numb". ---Przemysław Semik, rockmetal.pl

Taken from David Gilmour's 1984 tour supporting his About Face album, this California audience recording is an average recording of an above average performance. Most of the material on the two discs is culled from Gilmour's two solo albums, but there are a few Pink Floyd hits thrown in also. The sound at times is a bit muffled, and the various levels seem a bit skewed throughout. As well, the song times listed are incorrect. As this is one of only two known bootlegs from this tour (the other being a radio recording of a Pennslyvania show), and it's a must for diehard fans. ---Jason MacNei, AllMusic Review
