Kuschelrock, Vol. 1 is a schizophrenic double-disc collection of well-known pop/rock hits ranging from the '50s all the way up through the '80s. The problem isn't that the music here isn't memorable, it's just that much of it doesn't sit well together. Kuschelrock, Vol. 2 isn't as musically coherent as some of the later volumes in the series, as it mixes pop hits from two distinctly different musical eras -- the '70s and the '80s -- but it still functions as a handy way to obtain loads of popular singles in one two-disc swoop. Although the German-import price might be prohibitive for some, Kuschelrock Vol. 5 is a pretty good double-disc collection of mainstream pop hits circa the late '80s and early '90s. Some singles were more popular than others, naturally, but they generally fit well together, and it would be impossible to find even the biggest of these songs together on a collection released in the U.S. Just a few of those include Roxette's "It Must Have Been Love," Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game," Elton John's "Candle in the Wind," Bette Midler's "From a Distance," Paula Abdul's "Rush Rush," Stevie B's "Because I Love You (The Postman Song)," Lionel Richie's "Say You, Say Me," and many more. ---Steve Huey, AllMusic Review

Distributed in Europe, the Kuschelrock series is often uneven in its attempts to throw pop hits of all stripes together in one package, taking little consideration into the fact that most people don't have wildly diverse taste in music. The seventh volume of the series is quite scattershot, bounding from early-'80s arena rock to ultrahumble '90s alternative rock without much thought, not to mention including some singles that fall well outside of that range.
