The liner notes to Capitol's 20-track retrospective of rock goddess Pat Benatar's golden years are filled with testimonials from some of the genre's queens, both reigning (Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos) and retired (Jane Wiedlin, Martha Davis). It's a fitting tribute to the artist, as her four-and-a-half-octave vocal range spewing arena-sized anthems has yet to be matched by anyone with as much rock & roll panache. "We Belong," "Shadows of the Night," "Promises in the Dark," and "Love Is a Battlefield" are all certifiable '80s classics -- not just guilty pleasures -- and even later semi-hits like "Sex as a Weapon" and "All Fired Up" don't sound as overwrought as one would imagine, having not heard them in some time. Greatest Hits is just five songs longer than 1989's Best Shots -- reissued in 2003 with an accompanying DVD -- but the inclusion of fan favorites such as "Little Too Late" and "Le Bel Age" make this collection the most effective to date. Fair is fair. ---James Christopher Monger, AllMusic Review

This is one of Benatar's most underrated albums. Having generated the commercially successful singles, Invincible and Sex as Weapon, it's criticized by some as being another commercial sellout. Listening to the rest of the tracks, it's clear that this album offers much more musically and lyrically than the 'poppy' radio friendly singles that were produced.

Other than the two commercially oriented singles, there is some great songwriting found in the collaboration between Myron Grombacher (Pat's long time drummer) and her guitarist-hubby, Neil Geraldo. ---Darren, amazon.com

On Tropico, Pat Benatar began refashioning her sound, moving toward a more middle-of-the-road sound as evidenced by the hit single "We Belong." The change in direction revitalized the singer, resulting in her best album since Precious Time. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic Review

The keyboards are in the background by now, but the drums have acquired an obnoxious electronic sound, and the guitars focus on playing distorted chords instead of catchy licks. It's not an improvement. There are a lot of midtempo ballads here, most of which Pat didn't write; on the hit "We Belong" she's in fine voice, but nobody needs to hear half-baked tunes like "Love In The Ice Age" or "A Crazy World Like This." The rock numbers lack any of the band's earlier drama - with no dynamics changes or riffs, "Ooh Ooh Song" and "Temporary Heroes" are rote and boring. Capps apparently left while the album was being made; Donnie Nossov plays most of the bass parts. ---warr.org
