Nie brak jednak bardziej złośliwych opinii, które taki kierunek stylistyczny przypisują efektom starzenia się muzyków, z pośród których trzech obchodziło czterdzieste urodziny w roku wydania tegoż albumu.</p> <p>Niewątpliwie ciekawymi pozycjami płyty są, oparta na basowym riffie, zagranym jednak techniką typową dla gitar sześciostrunowych Don’t Forget Me, czy przywołująca na myśl bałkańskie rytmy On Mercury. Uwagę warto zwrócić również na Midnight, w której wyraźnie akcentowane są instrumenty smyczkowe, a także Cabron, kołyszącą akustycznymi gitarami, inspirowanymi muzyką latynoską. At first befuddled by reativity without the aid of stimulants, Frusciante in sessions at home started melding with his old bandmates and Californication- the band's most succesful album - was born.</p> <p>On the surface filled with the usual punk funk, the band had now matured enough to make it sound more convincing. Keidis' voice, ravaged by age and excess, now emerged as a mighty instrument, while Frusciante's guitar held far more subtle nuance.</p> <p>The album yielded four hit singles (Around the World, Otherside, Californication and the Grammy Award–winning Scar Tissue) but even more interesting waas the way the band let more than just fun and frolics into the mix. Frusciante on Get On Top even fused Public Enemy with prog rock, admittting that his unsdersatated solo had been influenced by Steve Howe of Yes.</p> <p>Overall the album has a far more meditative feel, allowing you to finally believe that they'd come to do more than just party your town dry. It was the album that confirmned them as world class. I Like Dirt to przykład rapowanki sięgającej wręcz debiutanckiej płyty, funkowanie Get On Top pasowałoby do epoki Freaky Styley, Purple Stain do Uplift, a przykładem funkowania bloodsugarowego był Around The World czy Scar Tissue – ballada ze szkoły Soul To Squeeze. Zespół zapuścił się też jednak w zupełnie nowe rejony. Weźmy choćby Parallel Universe, gdzie Flea gra na basie, o zgrozo!, kostką i jest zimnofalowa motoryka. Albo Right On Time, w którym pojawia się puls dyskotekowy (żeby nie było zbyt słodko skontrastowany gwałtownym rapem). Najważniejszą nowością były jednak kawałki jak Otherside, Easily czy tytułowy, świadczące o nowym podejściu do kompozycji i aranżacji. Muzycy zrezygnowali w nich z podstawy swojego stylu, czyli groove, skupiając się na harmoniach i melodiach. Powstały klasycznie rockowe piosenki. Piękne piosenki. Zapewne dzięki ich obecności tak fenomenalnie zareagował na Californication rynek.</p> <p>Biorąc to wszystko pod uwagę, trzeba zaznaczyć, że nie jest to album spójny. Nie stanowi jednolitego ciosu, jak Blood Sugar Sex Magik czy One Hot Minute. Flow zakłócają nagłe przeskoki stylistyczne, jak choćby Porcelain, istna kołysanka. One Hot Minute was the sound of the band trying to recapture the sound of Blood Sugar Sex Magic and is seen as a low point in their career. Only "My Friends" appears from that period and for a while the world almost forgot about the Chili Peppers.</p> <p>Then Dave left the band and John returned and in 1999 the band released Californication. The sound was softer and more melodic, yet they still retained that sound that made them, well them. "Scar Tissue", "Otherside" and "Californication" were without doubt Chili Pepper songs, but taken to a different place. Some thought they had sold out. But they hadn't sold out, they were evolving.</p> <p>When By the Way was released last year the sound of the band had shifted further away form the bass lines of Flea to the guitar melodies of John. Nie daje się przyćmić nawet tak znamienitemu gościowi, jakim jest znany z The Mars Volta Omar Rodriguez, który zagrał w "Especially in Michigan".</p> <p>To, co najważniejsze na tym wydawnictwie to same piosenki, a one stoją na najwyższym poziomie. "Desecration Smile" oczarowuje cudowną melodią i znakomitymi harmoniami, mającymi swoje źródło u The Beach Boys ("Smile" to tytuł legendarnego projektu nad którym pracował pod koniec lat 60-tych Brian Wilson, a który ujrzał światło dzienne po przeszło 30 latach). Funkowo-soulowe brzmienia rodem z Motown w "Warlocks" (gościnnie Billy Preston) nie powinny nikogo dziwić, ale jazzowe inspiracje w "Hey" już nie są takie oczywiste. Kalifornijczycy mocno mieszają w "Animal Bar" i "Storm in a Teacup", bawiąc się ekspresją i pokazując się od najbardziej zwariowanej strony. Dla równowagi w "We Believe" wspomaga ich dziecięcy chórek.</p> <p>Od strony balladowej "Stadium Arcadium" prezentuje się równie interesująco. "If" i "Slow Cheetah" oparte są głównie na akustycznych gitarach. Nawet jeśli kojarzenie pepperowskiego "If" z "If" Pink Floyd jest na wyrost, to jednak obydwie piosenki charakteryzuje podobny, wyciszony nastrój. "Stadium Arcadium" to z kolei ballada w stylu tytułowej piosenki z "Californication", a zarazem potencjalny singlowy przebój. Kalifornijczycy mocno mieszają w "Animal Bar" i "Storm in a Teacup", bawiąc się ekspresją i pokazując się od najbardziej zwariowanej strony. Dla równowagi w "We Believe" wspomaga ich dziecięcy chórek.</p> <p>Od strony balladowej "Stadium Arcadium" prezentuje się równie interesująco. "If" i "Slow Cheetah" oparte są głównie na akustycznych gitarach. Nawet jeśli kojarzenie pepperowskiego "If" z "If" Pink Floyd jest na wyrost, to jednak obydwie piosenki charakteryzuje podobny, wyciszony nastrój. "Stadium Arcadium" to z kolei ballada w stylu tytułowej piosenki z "Californication", a zarazem potencjalny singlowy przebój. The line up had changed prior to recording commenced following deaths and departures from the band, and Rick Rubin had been brought in on production duties. The result is an album that is frequently heralded as one of the defining albums of the 90s and one which far exceeds anything else the band have ever produced.</p> <p>The funk/punk style and Keidis's 'rapping' that had permeated previous RHCP album's is most definitely still there, but mixed with it is a strong melodic feel which adds a different dimension to the tracks. There's a structure and thought process to the songs that hadn't existed before. And even at a just-about-fittable-onto-a-CDR duration, the quality of "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" doesn't waver for a single one of it’s 74 minutes.</p> <p>The album is largely about sex - as the title might suggest. By now, the Chili Peppers shed guitarists like a second skin, changing their outer layer but retaining their inner core. Such is the case with I'm with You, the band’s first album since 2006's Stadium Arcadium. If that double-disc was defined by its unwieldy sprawl, its songs spewed not sequenced, I'm with You is characterized by its focus, both within individual tunes and the songs as a whole. New guitarist Josh Klinghoffer -- veteran sideman and longtime pal of Frusciante who provided secondary guitar on the closing stretch of the Stadium Arcadium tour -- doesn't compete for center stage the way previous Peppers did. He doesn't strut, he weaves, disappearing so completely into the arrangements he doesn't seem to leave his signature despite the heavy layers of guitars on each cut. This makes I'm with You the flipside of One Hot Minute, where the Chili Peppers bent over backward to accommodate Dave Navarro: the Peppers don't miss a step, they almost seem relieved to be carrying on without Frusciante. Part of that could be due to a newfound musical elasticity, a reflection of Flea taking music theory classes at USC during the group’s half-decade gap between albums. Certainly a song like "Happiness Loves Company" -- half Beach Boys, half Kinks -- shows a compositional dexterity unthinkable for previous incarnations of the Peppers, but there’s no showiness here, the album is all about precision. This extends to Anthony Kiedis, who neither hams it up on the ballads nor goofs around on his raps, he merely serves the purposes of the song like the old pro he now is. Czasami eksploduje ścianą przesterowanego dźwięku kojarzącego się z Navarro (Monarchy Of Roses). W solówkach jest raczej oszczędny, ze skłonnością do brzmieniowego eksperymentowania. Akompaniując w balladach wtapia się natomiast w tło. Zagadką pozostaje zresztą, dlaczego większość jego partii na płycie wycofana jest w miksie. Zwłaszcza po gitarowej orgii Stadium Arcadium... Acha, Josh lubi pośpiewać w harmoniach, a jego barwa momentami zbliża się do żeńskiej.</p> <p>Można podejrzewać, że namieszał przy tej płycie Flea, który rozwijał się m.in. na drodze studiowania muzyki klasycznej. Stąd zamiłowanie do instrumentów klawiszowych, zarówno jeśli chodzi o wyraźne wprowadzanie ich do brzmienia (Happiness Loves Company, Even You Brutus?), jak punkt wyjścia kompozycji (Police Station – niewydanie tak uroczej ballady na singlu to zbrodnia). Przy czym zastosowane są aranżacje nawiązujące do lat 70. Pchła zgłębiał też muzykę afrykańską. Nie dziwi więc rytmika Dance, Dance, Dance i wprowadzenie dodatkowych przeszkadzajek, za które odpowiadał brazylijski perkusjonista Mauro Refosco.</p> <p>I’m With You to płyta zespołu w okresie przejściowym. By now, the Chili Peppers shed guitarists like a second skin, changing their outer layer but retaining their inner core. Such is the case with I'm with You, the band’s first album since 2006's Stadium Arcadium. If that double-disc was defined by its unwieldy sprawl, its songs spewed not sequenced, I'm with You is characterized by its focus, both within individual tunes and the songs as a whole. New guitarist Josh Klinghoffer -- veteran sideman and longtime pal of Frusciante who provided secondary guitar on the closing stretch of the Stadium Arcadium tour -- doesn't compete for center stage the way previous Peppers did. He doesn't strut, he weaves, disappearing so completely into the arrangements he doesn't seem to leave his signature despite the heavy layers of guitars on each cut. This makes I'm with You the flipside of One Hot Minute, where the Chili Peppers bent over backward to accommodate Dave Navarro: the Peppers don't miss a step, they almost seem relieved to be carrying on without Frusciante. Part of that could be due to a newfound musical elasticity, a reflection of Flea taking music theory classes at USC during the group’s half-decade gap between albums. Certainly a song like "Happiness Loves Company" -- half Beach Boys, half Kinks -- shows a compositional dexterity unthinkable for previous incarnations of the Peppers, but there’s no showiness here, the album is all about precision. This extends to Anthony Kiedis, who neither hams it up on the ballads nor goofs around on his raps, he merely serves the purposes of the song like the old pro he now is. Tym razem bez dramatów – John Frusciante przekazał pałeczkę swojemu kumplowi i muzycznemu współpracownikowi. Josh Klinghoffer namieszał nawet bardziej niż Dave Navarro. A może to zespół, korzystając z okazji, zmienił oblicze, a młodziak tylko poszedł za ciosem?</p> <p>Bo trudno mówić o jakimś jego wyrazistym stylu. Potrafi grać funkowo, w stylu Mother’s Milk (Look Around), serwować oszczędne zagrywki, jak z Blood Sugar (The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie) albo – to najbardziej oryginalne – odpalać dziwne, niby-elektroniczne odgłosy (Factory Of Faith). Czasami eksploduje ścianą przesterowanego dźwięku kojarzącego się z Navarro (Monarchy Of Roses). W solówkach jest raczej oszczędny, ze skłonnością do brzmieniowego eksperymentowania. Akompaniując w balladach wtapia się natomiast w tło. Zagadką pozostaje zresztą, dlaczego większość jego partii na płycie wycofana jest w miksie. Zwłaszcza po gitarowej orgii Stadium Arcadium... Acha, Josh lubi pośpiewać w harmoniach, a jego barwa momentami zbliża się do żeńskiej.</p> <p>Można podejrzewać, że namieszał przy tej płycie Flea, który rozwijał się m.in. na drodze studiowania muzyki klasycznej. Stąd zamiłowanie do instrumentów klawiszowych, zarówno jeśli chodzi o wyraźne wprowadzanie ich do brzmienia (Happiness Loves Company, Even You Brutus?), jak punkt wyjścia kompozycji (Police Station – niewydanie tak uroczej ballady na singlu to zbrodnia). Przy czym zastosowane są aranżacje nawiązujące do lat 70. Pchła zgłębiał też muzykę afrykańską. Nie dziwi więc rytmika Dance, Dance, Dance i wprowadzenie dodatkowych przeszkadzajek, za które odpowiadał brazylijski perkusjonista Mauro Refosco.</p> <p>I’m With You to płyta zespołu w okresie przejściowym. To człowiek z dorobkiem – jego Jane’s Addiction było w latach 80. podziwiane przez Peppersów jako przykład sukcesu w muzyce alternatywnej. To muzyk z charakterystycznym stylem. Czujący groove, ale budujący wokół niego atmosferyczne dźwiękowe tło zamiast funkowego przycinania. Wpłynęło to na pracę sekcji rytmicznej, mniej zwartej, bardziej zwichrowanej rytmicznie. I na śpiew Kiedisa, który z przeciąganiem fraz i nałożonymi efektami zerkał chyba w stronę Perry’ego Farrella.</p> <p>Kwintesencją nowego kierunku był Warped, dawka czadowej psychodelii. Wybrany na pierwszy singel musiał konfudować – nic dziwnego, że płyta sprzedawała się gorzej od Blood Sugar. Równie agresywny był One Big Mob, gdzie melancholijna wstawka pojawiła się w środku, orientalizujący Coffee Shop, Deep Kick (minus introdukcja) czy utwór tytułowy. Psychodeliczny klimat przeniknął do utworów funkowych: czy będzie to dynamiczny Shallow Be Thy Game czy leniwy Falling Into Grace. A także do ballad: akustycznej My Friends czy Tearjerker opartej na spogłosowanych arpeggiach dalekich od hendrixowskiej szkoły Frusciantego. Przykładem radosnego redhotowego grania był właściwie tylko Aeroplane. Z grubo klangowanym basem, punktowym biciem gitary i dziecięcym chórem pod koniec. Uśmiech musiał się też pojawić przy Pea – miniaturce wyśpiewanej przez Flea wyłącznie z akompaniamentem basu. Pchła był motorem twórczym w sytuacji, gdy koledzy przebywali na innych orbitach.</p> <p>Na bieżąco trudno było taką woltę Red Hot Chili Peppers zaakceptować. Wybrany na pierwszy singel musiał konfudować – nic dziwnego, że płyta sprzedawała się gorzej od Blood Sugar. Równie agresywny był One Big Mob, gdzie melancholijna wstawka pojawiła się w środku, orientalizujący Coffee Shop, Deep Kick (minus introdukcja) czy utwór tytułowy. Psychodeliczny klimat przeniknął do utworów funkowych: czy będzie to dynamiczny Shallow Be Thy Game czy leniwy Falling Into Grace. A także do ballad: akustycznej My Friends czy Tearjerker opartej na spogłosowanych arpeggiach dalekich od hendrixowskiej szkoły Frusciantego. Przykładem radosnego redhotowego grania był właściwie tylko Aeroplane. Z grubo klangowanym basem, punktowym biciem gitary i dziecięcym chórem pod koniec. Uśmiech musiał się też pojawić przy Pea – miniaturce wyśpiewanej przez Flea wyłącznie z akompaniamentem basu. Pchła był motorem twórczym w sytuacji, gdy koledzy przebywali na innych orbitach.</p> <p>Na bieżąco trudno było taką woltę Red Hot Chili Peppers zaakceptować. It was also available digitally as the iTunes bonus track for Stadium Arcadium upon its 2007 rerelease, but was quickly removed for unknown reasons.
