Last time we saw 3 Doors Down it was in 2011, when the post-alt quintet started to take stock of the onset of middle age on the monotone Time of My Life. Looking straight into the abyss caused the band to fracture, with the group losing founding member guitarist Matt Roberts and longtime bassist Todd Harrell, leaving vocalist Brad Arnold firmly at the helm. Arnold retained drummer Greg Upchurch, kicked Chris Henderson up to lead guitar, added new guitarist Chet Roberts and bassist Justin Biltonen, then hired renowned heavy rock producer Matt Wallace to make 2016's Us and the Night. Despite its nocturnal title, Us and the Night is by many measures a brighter affair than Time of My Life: the guitars are still cranked to the max and the rhythms would fill a stadium but the tenor is lighter, the band spending equal time on affirmations ("Everybody's got a right to change," they cry on "Believe It") and sly sleaze ("In the Dark" -- as in "She likes to do it in the dark" -- is Nickelback by any other name). If 3 Doors Down favor wide strokes over specificity, that only underscores how they're attracted to the elements that drift along in the mainstream current, appropriating shopworn mass culture so they can spin it into something bigger, louder, and simpler. To their credit, these instincts sound better here than they have on the last couple records because they embrace their essence, how they want to be broader and burlier than the rest, how they want reflection to seem like celebration and parties to be a dark night of the soul. This contradiction means the band remains an uneasy good time, but at least on Us and the Night the reconstituted 3 Doors Down have decided to look on the sunny side of life. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic Reviews

3 Doors Down’s “Where My Christmas Lives” is the latest release from the band. It’s an EP that came out for the holidays featuring the band’s new Christmas song that goes by the same name. On the EP you’ll find the normal version of the song and then you’ll find an acoustic version of the song. There’s also six more acoustic songs coming off of the band’s last album. The Christmas song is pretty straight-forward, it will definitely play well in anybody’s holiday collection. That’s not why you should download this LP though. The cool part about this is the acoustic songs that you get alongside of it. It’s good to hear “Let Me Be Myself” and “It’s Not My Time” in their acoustic forms. The band could have just released the Christmas song as a single and called it good, but they decided to add the acoustic tracks to the release, that’s something that their fans will appreciate. This EP is for 3 Doors Down fans, casual listeners might like the Christmas song and a song here and there, but fans of the band will appreciate all 8 tracks on this holiday release. ---Ryan, alternativeaddiction.com

Like many heavy guitar bands who surfaced at the tail-end of the '90s, 3 Doors Down have reverted to comfortable old habits in their advanced years, shedding some of the post-grunge trappings of their hit album in favor of a slightly more conventional sound, one where classic rock mixes it up with '80s metal. Not that the boys have gotten fun on their eponymous 2008 album. Some of the cavernous murk has lifted, some of the sonics have straightened out, replaced by something that's heavier yet still leaden -- as typified by the opening "Train," which lurches with the intention of turning into a Southern-fried Skynyrd rocker but never quite does -- but the group is inherently indisposed to having a laugh. Naturally, a group this earnest does sing about matters of life and death, as on "Citizen/Soldier," a salute to America's National Guardsmen, that wound up being used in a National Guard recruitment ad in the year prior to the release of 3 Doors Down, but there's heartfelt searching, like when singer Brad Arnold complains that "It's Not My Time," or the many times he decides he just has to be himself, thereby exhorting his fans to do the same. All this moodiness is set to guitars that surge, not really riding any riffs but rather pushing his pleas forward on Walls of Sound so compressed and cleansed they wind up sounding like mush. And that's the ultimate irony of 3 Doors Down as they mature: try as they may to pour out their angst-ridden hearts, by riding out their success and smoothing out their music they've turned into mildly aggro background music at malls and movie theaters across the nation. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Time of My Life is an album by American rock band 3 Doors Down, released on July 19, 2011. It is the band's fifth studio album after their self-titled album released in 2008. On July 22, 2010, the band stated during a concert in London, Ontario, Canada that they were due to start recording their new record the very next week. They also performed a new song, confirming it was going to be on the next record, entitled "On the Run."

In October 2010, the band finished the recording process of the new album in Los Angeles, CA, with Grammy nominated Howard Benson taking the role as producer. On October 27, 2010, 3 Doors Down performed at the T.J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia, Cancer and AIDS Research event held in New York City. In an interview at the event, lead singer Brad Arnold revealed the album title as "Time Of My Life." In addition, it was confirmed the band were looking to release the upcoming album in February 2011.

On January 10, 2011, it was confirmed the first single from the album, entitled "When You're Young", was to be released to radio the very same day.

On March 31, 2011, 3 Doors Down announced that "Time of My Life" was set to be released on July 19, 2011. Brad Arnold spoke very positively of the album's heavier sound, "This record shows some growth on our part. We've had success in the past and we're very thankful for that, but there's always room to… take it up to another level. And I feel like we did that. There's a lot of songs that people can immediately identify with. We just really wanted to do our best on this record, and looking back on the whole experience, I can really say that we did."

"When You're Young" was used by WWE on the April 15, 2011 episode of WWE Smackdown and later featured on every WWE programming in a video retrospective to Edge on the night that he surrendered the World Heavyweight Championship for the last time after he announced on WWE Raw that he is forced to retire from in ring competition due to a career threatening injury.

On May 19, 2011, it was announced the second single from the album, entitled "Every Time You Go", was to be released to digital outlets on May 23, 2011.

Initial reviews of the album seem positive, with one reviewer claiming its a "ballsy, rock'n'roll effort" whilst giving us a hint of some of the lyrical content to come.
