Released in 2012, Scars & Stories saw the Fray expanding on the size and scope of their signature blend of American trad rock-meets-'90s alt-pop with the aid of Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen producer Brendan O'Brien. For 2014's Helios, the band enlisted help from Stuart Price (the Killers, Madonna), and his electronic flourishes serve as the driving force behind their fourth long-player. Helios begins innocuously enough with "Hold My Hand," a straight-up, anthem generator-spawned arm-waver that pairs a safe, circular, entirely familiar chord progression with a melody that returns the favor (a description that applies to most if not all of the ten songs that follow), before unleashing the album's first single, "Love Don't Die," a digitized boot-stomper that leans hard on the Kings of Leon/Black Keys side of the Fray spectrum. Flirtations with disco ("Give It Away") and pure Killers-cloned electro-pop ("Hurricane") follow, but the Fray never sound as comfortable as they do when they're dishing out relatively generic yet undeniably impassioned slabs of Springsteen, Train, Goo Goo Dolls, and Coldplay-inspired, open-highway treacle like "Our Last Days" and "Wherever This Goes." Even the middling power ballad "Break Your Plans" and the easy and convivial "Wherever This Goes," the latter a slick mash-up of the Lumineers "Ho Hey" and something off of Fleetwood Mac's Tusk, outshine Helios' more experimental (sonically speaking) moments, due in large part to the fact that they sound like the work of a band, and not a band working way too hard to sound relevant. ---James Christopher Monger, AllMusic Review

Zespół The Fray połączył siły z producentem Stewartem Price'em, znanym ze współpracy z takimi tuzami współczesnego rynku jak The Killers, czy Madonna, by - jak sądzę - zawojować listy sprzedaży i szturmem wedrzeć się na playlisty największych rozgłośni radiowych. Do pomocy został także skaptowany Ryan Tedder (One Republic), który pomógł zespołowi napisać piosenkę "Love Don't Die". Jeśli zamierzeniem The Fray było osiągnięcie poziomu modnego przeciętniactwa, które w głównym nurcie popowego grania zapewni zespołowi kilka nominacji do komercyjnych nagród i sporo nieszczerych uśmiechów od tych, którzy muzycznym rynkiem rządzą, to brawo - mission complete, można by rzec, trochę złośliwie. Komercyjne rozgłośnie radiowe się ucieszą na nowy materiał, część z tych piosenek powalczy o wysokie lokaty na listach przebojów, niemniej pewnie żadna nie zostanie zapamiętana na dłużej.

Czy jest tak źle? Nie, jest całkiem przyzwoicie. Skupmy się może na jasnych stronach płyty. Akurat udział Teddera, jak najbardziej dodał płycie kolorytu - "Love Don't Die" brzmi przebojowo, świeżo, bardzo tanecznie i nieszablonowo, przynajmniej jak na kawałek, który ma się sprawdzić w popularnych stacjach para muzycznych. Słucha się tego z przyjemnością. Podobnie jak znakomitego, pełnego pulsującej rytmiki "Give It Away", który ma w sobie wiele z disco; funkowo pobrzmiewa tu gitara, fajnie buja bas. Wszystko jest na miejscu, nic tylko rwać nogi do tańca. Następny w kolejności kawałek wita nas riffem gitary przywołującym klimat piosenek The Cure, przynajmniej tych bardziej radosnych ("Closer"). Też pięknie!

Niestety pozostała część materiału jest dość senna i raczej nie spowoduje żywszego bicia serca u słuchaczy. Są oczywiście rzeczy przyzwoite, na których - gdy lecą w radiu - stacji się nie zmienia, jak "Huriccane" (bardzo skoczny i radosny - te zaśpiewy), czy "Our Last Days" (z monotonnym, ale przykuwającym uwagę klawiszem i prostą, ale sugestywną solówką elektrycznej gitary), albo też "Wherever This Goes" (z lekko soulowym zacięciem - znowu chóry). "Same As You" ma całkiem przyjemny, rozmarzony klimat. Czuć tu potencjał zespołu do pisania fajnych numerów. Niemniej trudno tu o zachwyt - raczej podchodzi się do tych piosenek przywołując mądre ludowe porzekadło, że "na bezrybiu i rak ryba". Są jednak na "Heliosie" także rzeczy mocno sztampowe, które słyszało się już miliony razy, i to niekoniecznie u zespołów, które niosą sztandar z napisem rockowa, czy chociaż popowa pierwsza liga ("Keep On Wanting", "Break Your Plans"). Niestety nienaganna produkcja i spory budżet nie zatrą braku naprawdę wpadających w ucho melodii, bo bez tego ani rusz.

Modne, ale przewidywalne granie. Średnia na miarę współczesnego rynku pop, z paroma jaśniejszymi momentami. Nic dla fanów prawdziwego rocka, czy stawiającej wyzwania alternatywy. Spróbować można, gdy nie spodziewamy się rewelacji, rozczarowania nie będzie. ---Paweł Lach, rockmagazyn.pl

Critically acclaimed Denver-based foursome The Fray are back with their third album, Scars & Stories. The album was recorded at the legendary Blackbird Studios in Nashville. The Fray was able to hone their sound with the help of producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, and Neil Young). On the new recording, the band transforms their real life experiences into a collection of songs that are reflective, but still maintain a pop sensibility. The making of Scars and Stories fostered the most evolution the band has ever experienced, both lyrically and musically. "On our first record, we didn't quite trust ourselves yet," says lead-singer Isaac Slade. "We loosened up on the second album, but there was still some element of restraint. But on this one, we just stepped up to plate and swung as hard as we could." Scars & Stories leads with first single "Heartbeat," of which Slade notes, "That song came out of a period of my life when I was trying hard to be open to whatever came my way. I traveled through South Africa and Rwanda with a buddy, and at first it was really hard to stay open in the face of so much pain and heartache. But then I ended up meeting so many cool and inspiring people, and all these ideas for lyrics and melodies just started rushing in." The inspiration specifically came from a chance meeting with an expatriate woman. Speaking of the miracle of the capital city overcoming such remarkable odds, the two held hands and Slade reveals "I felt so connected to her. I couldn t tell if it was her pulse or mine." The Fray is Isaac Slade (pianist/vocalist), Joe King (guitarist/vocalist), Dave Welsh (guitarist), and Ben Wysocki (drummer). The band formed in 2002 after high school friends Slade and King bumped into each other at a local guitar shop. The group achieved national success with their first single, "Over My Head (Cable Car)," which became a top ten hit in the U.S. The release of their second single, "How to Save a Life" brought them worldwide fame, and the group's second self-titled album debuted at number-one on the Billboard charts and was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. ---Editorial Reviews, amazon.com
