Blues guitarist Big Bill Broonzy was born in Mississippi but is considered the granddaddy of the Chicago sound. One of the first rural blues musicians to merge southern country flavor with the grit of the urban north, Broonzy was an influence on generations of blues guitarists from Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy to their many subsequent disciples. Broonzy's impact also extended into the folk realm as he collaborated with, among others, Pete Seeger and Josh White and is cited as a major influence by legendary British folk guitarist Bert Jansch. While perhaps not as well-known today as during his 1930s heyday, Broonzy's impact on blues and folk music is inestimable.

Big Bill Broonzy – guitar, vocals

Big Bill Broonzy was a prolific American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. His career began in the 1920s when he played country blues to mostly black audiences. Through the ‘30s and ‘40s he successfully navigated a transition in style to a more urban blues sound popular with white audiences. In the 1950s a return to his traditional folk-blues roots made him one of the leading figures of the emerging American folk music revival and an international star. His long and varied career marks him as one of the key figures in the development of blues music in the 20th century.

Broonzy copyrighted more than 300 songs during his lifetime, including both adaptations of traditional folk songs and original blues songs. As a blues composer, he was unique in that his compositions reflected the many vantage points of his rural-to-urban experiences. These varied experiences helped Broonzy to pioneer the Chicago blues; a genre later popularized by Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. Though he mostly played the acoustic guitar, Broonzy was said to have played the electric guitar as early as 1942. ---amazon.com

Black, Brown and White includes live tracks recorded in Belgium in March 1952 (three featuring pianist Blind John Davis) and December 1955 during Europe's discovery of Big Bill Broonzy. The highlight of the disc is the laid-back atmosphere in the living room setting recorded at Broonzy biographer Yannick Bruyoghes' house in Brussels. Several Broonzy classics are revisited, along with traditional blues standards "Nobody's Business," "Alberta," and "Careless Love." ---Al Campbell, AMG
