All too often I have heard blues described as depressing, “cry in your beer” type music. Lazer Lloyd is not your typical blues man. How did a Jew who was born in New York and raised in Connecticut end up playing the blues in the Holy Land? On his self-titled album, Lloyd explains it all in a song: “Rockin’ in the Holy Land” tells how he played a concert with a hippie rabbi in New York and ended up playing with him in the Holy Land. He has explained that he fell in love with Israel and has been there for 20 years.

No matter where he lives, Lloyd’s music is universal. This is real healing music at its best. “Never Give Up” had this reviewer in tears, touched by the sheer honesty and the inspiring message. My other favorite tracks, “Broken Dreams,” Love Yourself,” “Time to Love,” and “Whole Heart” all offer superb guitar, heartfelt vocals, and a message of hope and love.

In addition, Lloyd offers an excellent version of “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay,” fairly faithful to the original but just different enough to catch and hold the attention of the listener. The other songs on the album are also well worth hearing multiple times. “Burning Thunder” is a real rocker while “Suffering,” “Out of Time,” “Set My Soul Free,” and “Moroccan Woman” all are a perfect blend of blues-rock, expert guitar and honest lyrics. All of the songs except “Dock of The Bay” were written by Lloyd and you feel that he is speaking to and sharing directly with you.

This album stands out. It is not typical. I am as fond of songs about drinking, partying and romantic relationships as the next reviewer, but these songs, from the heart, are what the blues really are all about: they are, in a word, real. ---Rhetta, makingascene.org

Lazer Lloyd – vocals, guitar, harmonica

One of the best-known blues musicians in Israel, American singer/songwriter/guitarist Lazer Lloyd (born Lloyd Paul Blumen) carved a career for himself by promoting the blues genre in the Middle East, where it was lesser known than at home. A soulful singer and guitarist, he was born in New York and raised in Madison, Connecticut on blues, folk, rock, and jazz by a musician father, having access to his extensive record collection. Eventually developing a style that incorporated all of these genre influences into his emotive blues, he was playing lead guitar along the East Coast with his band Legacy by age 15. He started singing and writing songs while a music major at Skidmore College in upstate New York, where he studied under the tutelage of musicians including jazz bassist Milt Hinton and Blood, Sweat & Tears' Randy Brecker. After graduating, he formed the Last Mavericks and had a brief dalliance with Atlantic Records, who planned to take him to Nashville. Instead, he was moved to accept an invitation by singer/songwriter Shlomo Carlebach (aka Reb Schlomo) to go to Israel after they played a show together in Manhattan.

Arriving in his adopted country in 1994, he joined the psychedelic jam band Reva L'Sheva (under his Hebrew name Eliezer Blumen) and spent the next ten years touring and recording with them until he self-released his solo debut album, the folk-rock-influenced Higher Ground, in 2004. He then established the roots rock trio Yood, which issued two albums, 2007's Passin' Over and 2008's Real People, and toured in Israel and the U.S. In 2011 he released the acoustic Lazer Lloyd Unplugged, Blues in Tel Aviv, and a collection of Hebrew songs titled Haneshama. A collaboration with David Orbach titled King of Blues and the solo My Own Blues followed in 2012. The next year, Blues Leaf Records issued an acoustic Lazer Lloyd album, Lost on the Highway, and the bluesman continued to tour Israel and North America under his own name. Growing up in Connecticut, at age fifteen, Lazer was already playing in night clubs along the Connecticut shoreline and in New Haven with his group Legacy. At eighteen, Lazer went to Skidmore College to study music under Milt Hinton (bass player for Louis Armstrong), Randy Brecker (Blood, Sweat and Tears), and Gene Bertoncini.

After college, Lazer returned to Connecticut to form a blues based rock band called The Last Mavericks. Their first demo gained them a showcase with Atlantic Records. Toby Mofet from A&R at Atlantic took Lazer to Manhattan to record with plans to send him to Nashville to work with producer Garry Tallent (the bass player from The E-Street Band). One night in NY, Lazer played a gig with the legendary Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach who invited Lazer to play with him in Israel and he quickly decided to take his music to the Middle East in 1994.

Once in Israel, Lazer joined the beloved jam band Reva L'Sheva as the lead guitar player and second singer and toured and recorded with them for a decade. Born Lloyd Paul Blumen in NY, Lazer moved at a young age to Connecticut with his parents. Eliezer Pinchas Blumen is his Hebrew name. Lazer is short for Eliezer and Lazer Lloyd is a combination of his Hebrew and English names. Growing up in Connecticut, at age fifteen, Lazer was already playing in night clubs along the Connecticut shoreline. One night in NY, Lazer played a gig with the legendary singing Rabbi, Shlomo Carlebach, who invited Lazer to play with him in Israel and he quickly decided to take his music to the Middle East in 1994. Once in Israel, Lazer joined Reva L’Sheva as their lead guitar player. With few blues fans in his new home country, Lazer became a trailblazer as he wrote and performed his own blues tunes mixed with the classics and built an audience for the blues in a country where it was an exotic delight. In 2014 and 2015 Lazer brought his blues act to the USA to rave reviews featuring great musicians such as on bass Johnny B. Gayden (Albert Collins and Johnny Winter) at his midwest shows and Ron Perry (John Lee Hooker) on bass on the west coast with his US based drummer Kenny Coleman of the Chicago Blues Kings, his Canadian band featured blues all-stars Gary Kendall and Mike Fitzpatrick from JUNO award winning Downchild. Following various solo and band projects, in 2011 he released a live blues album "Blues in Tel Aviv" and in 2012 his studio album, “My Own Blues”, was the Israeli Blues Society’s selection for Best Israeli Blues Album. In 2013 he released an acoustic blues album entitled “Lost on the Highway” on Blues Leaf Records. “Lost” got airplay and charted on radio all across the US as well as in Italy, Germany, England, and Scotland. --- embassies.gov.il
