English composer Joby Talbot made his Royal Ballet debut in 2006, creating the score for Royal Ballet Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor’s Chroma. Talbot has since written two full-length ballet scores for the Company, in collaboration with Royal Ballet Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (2011), the Company’s first full-length commission for more than twenty years, and The Winter’s Tale (2014).

Talbot was born in Wimbledon in 1971 and studied privately with Brian Elias, before attending the Royal Holloway and Bedford New College and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Simon Bainbridge. Works include the opera Everest (2015), first performed by Dallas Opera; the trumpet concerto Desolation Wilderness (2006), first performed by Alison Balsom and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; the choral piece Path of Miracles (2005), written for Tenebrae; and the madrigal The Wishing Tree (2002), commissioned by The King’s Singers. Other works include Worlds, Stars, Systems, Infinity, first performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Esa-Pekka Salonen at Royal Festival Hall in 2012, and Meniscus for Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts 2013 World Environment Day celebrations. Talbot has also worked extensively in film and television, major credits including The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), Son of Rambow (2007), Franklyn (2008) and The League of Gentlemen (BBC2 series, 1999–2002).

Talbot has written widely for dance, collaborations including Wheeldon’s Fool’s Paradise (Morphoses, 2007), McGregor’s Entity (Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, 2008) and Genus (Paris Opera Ballet, 2007) and Chamber Symphony for Medhi Walerski’s Chamber (Residentie Orkest/Nederlands Dans Theater and Norwegian Opera and Ballet, 2012). ---roh.org.uk

Kształcił się w Royal Holloway i Bedford New College, studia na poziomie magisterskim ukończył w dziedzinie kompozycji na Guildhall School of Music and Drama w klasie Simona Bainbridge’a. Jego różnorodna twórczość obejmuje zarówno koncert na trąbkę napisany dla Alison Balsom i filharmoników z Liverpoolu (Desolation Wilderness, 2006), jak i 60-minutowy utwór chóralny a capella dla inspirowany słynną trasą pielgrzymkową do Santiago de Compostella (Path of Miracles, 2005). Artysta aranżował także rockowe kompozycje zespołu The White Stripes i pisał oryginalną muzykę na potrzeby spektaklu Chroma w choreografii Wayne’a McGregora (Royal Ballet, 2006). Jest też twórcą muzyki do realizowanego w koprodukcji z Kanadyjskim Baletem Narodowym pełnospektaklowego narracyjnego baletu Przygody Alicji w Krainie Czarów w choreografii Christophera Wheeldona zamówionego przez Royal Ballet.

Ma na swym koncie także madrygał The Wishing Tree (King’s Singers, 2002), orkiestrowe Sneaker Wave (BBC National Orchestra of Wales, 2004), aranżował także Chacconę g-moll Hanry’ego Purcella dla festiwalu BBC Proms (BBC Symphony Orchestra, 2011). Worlds, Stars, Systems, Infinity wykonane zostało po raz pierwszy w 2012 roku pod batutą Esy-Pekki Salonena w Royal Festival Hall – utwór został zamówiony jako dopełnienie Planet Holsta w ramach cyfrowej instalacji Philharmonia Orchestra Universe of Sound. Tide Harmonic (2009), utwór na poszerzony skład, który posłużył jako muzyka do spektaklu Eau w choreografii Carolyn Carlson dla CCN Roubaix, został także zaadaptowany przez Christophera Wheeldona do jego zrealizowanego w 2013 przez Pacific Northwest Ballet spektaklu, również pod tytułem Tide Harmonic.

Inne znaczące kompozycje napisane lub zaadaptowane na potrzeby tańca przez Jobiego Talbota to m.in. Fool’s Paradise (Christopher Wheeldon i Morphoses, 2007), aranżacja powstałej w 2002 roku jego autorskiej muzyki do niemego filmu Umierający łabędź, Genus (Opera Paryska), Entity (Wayne McGregor i Random Dance, 2008), a także Chamber Symphony do spektaklu Chamber w choreografii Medhiego Walerskiego (Residentie Orkest/Nederlands Dans Theater i Norwegian Opera and Ballet, 2012). W 2014 odbyła się premiera pełnospektaklowego baletu Opowieść zimowa z muzyką tego artysty – to jego kolejny projekt realizowany z Christopherem Wheeldonem dla Royal Ballet i National Ballet of Canada. Oprócz tego wymienić należy wznowienia Przygód Alicji w Krainie Czarów, Chamber, Chromy, Path of Miracles i Tide Harmonic na całym świecie. W styczniu 2015 Joby Talbot realizował swoją pierwszą, jednoaktową operę Everest (wystawioną przez Operę w Dallas). ---teatrwielki.pl

‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, whose score is the first commissioned by The Royal Ballet for a full-length narrative dance work in 20 years, won over not only London audiences but those in Canada and the US, flocking to its premiere North American season with the National Ballet of Canada in June of 2011. The production was sold out well in advance of its close and ended as the company’s highest-grossing production of all time.
