Award-winning, chart-topping vocalist Ana Moura is the most successful and beloved fadista to appear in the 21st century. Her recordings have consistently sold well and her global concert tours are consistent sellouts. She was born in the historic city of Santarem, on the Tejo River north of Lisbon. As a girl, Moura was steeped in fado and its traditions, brought up in a family where the music was valued and loved, sung at home and at family gatherings. Though she experimented in adolescence with pop and rock music, singing in local bands, Moura's commitment to fado never waned. Even in pop shows, she would include some fado in the repertoire. Moura's shift in emphasis toward her national music began at age 20 when she wandered into one of the many fado houses in her region with a group of friends at age 20. Encouraged by friends to sing for the guitarists and aficionados who were gathered there, Moura was received warmly. She became a regular in the local fado culture. At a casual Christmas party that same year, Moura was discovered by the famous Maria de Fe, who invited Moura to come and sing with her at her house. Her love for the music grew with her reputation, and she began appearing on local television and throughout the regional press.

Her debut album, Guarda-me a Vida Na Mão from Universal Music, appeared in 2003 and garnered critical acclaim. Her sophomore release, Aconteceu, was even bigger in scale, placing on the international charts and laying the ground for her breakthrough, Para Além da Saudade, in 2007. Its singles "Os Buzios" and "Fado da Procura" landed high on the charts in Portugal and netted her television appearances on programs such as Family Contact and Superstar as well as Golden Globe nominations. The album stayed on the Portuguese charts for 120 weeks. Also in 2007, she appeared on-stage singing with Mick Jagger when the Rolling Stones played her country. In 2009, Prince, a fan of fado and of Moura, traveled to Paris to catch one of her concerts. That summer, she appeared with him at the Super Bock Super Rock Festival in Meco. Moura released her next album, Leva-me Aos Fados, late in the year. It went platinum during its first week on the shelves, and netted four chart-topping hit singles: the title track, "Caso Arrumado," "Rumo ao Sul," and "Fado Vestido de Fado."

In September 2010, Moura accepted an invitation from the Frankfurt Radio Bigband to perform two concerts in the German city. She reciprocated and asked the jazz orchestra to accompany her at homecoming concerts at the Lisbon and Porto Coliseums in April 2011. Her next album, Desfado, issued in 2013, spent 150 weeks on the Portuguese charts and was certified quintuple platinum. Moura supported its release by touring the globe, giving performances on a variety of important world stages including N.Y.C.'s Carnegie Hall. A hit live album with an accompanying concert film followed Desfado in 2014. Her next studio offering, Moura, hit the top spot on various international charts upon its release in November 2015, with a world tour in support. The album was released in the United States in April, 2016. --- Evan C. Gutierrez, Rovi

Ana Moura nazywana jest księżniczką fado. Jej popularność wykracza jednak daleko poza grono wielbicieli stylu, który jest narodowym skarbem Portugalii. Zachwyciła Prince'a i muzyków The Rolling Stones, na jej ostatniej płycie gra sam Herbie Hancock!

Ana Moura zaczęła śpiewać będąc małą dziewczynką, ale później, jako nastolatka, preferowała nowoczesne style. W końcu jednak trafiła do Domu Fado "Senhor do Vinho", gdzie odkrył ją producent Jorge Fernando.

W 2005 r Tim Ries, saksofonista The Rolling Stones, zachwycony głosem Any, zaprosił ją do współtworzenia płyty w ramach The Rolling Stones Project. Przyjaźń z gigantami rocka zaowocowała udziałem Tima Riesa w pracy nad kolejnym albumem Any.

W utworze "Dream of Fire" gra Herbie Hancock, a jego fortepian elektryczny wnosi nową wartość i ciekawie współbrzmi z charakterystyczną gitarą portugalską. ---koncerty.com

Ana Moura is universally acknowledged as one of the finest fado singers of the present generation. Her plaintive, smoky vocals has garnereda loyal European following, including members of The Rolling Stones. Whether starkly declaiming or swirling into filigreed crescendos of emotion, Ana's burnished alto personifies fado's darkly sensual credo of wisdom born of pain, grace, and futility, and secual passion perpetually on simmer, despite repeated and increasingly bitter betrayals. ---Editorial Reviews

This is a powerful album which is deliciously light-footed at the same time! It has garnered a Best of 2007s Editors' Pick from "The Beat Magazine," among others. Ana Moura is the young fadista of the moment in Portugal, the artist leading the current generation of fado singers. Fado is the poetic, deeply expressive idiom which personifies the Portuguese psyche as it explores such universal themes as lost love, separation, and longing.

Fado literally means destiny, and the music expresses the exquisite longing -- saudade -- for all what fate makes unattainable. Emerging from the working classes at least as far back as the early 19th century Portugal, the music is most often associated with smoky bars and huskily mournfully voiced fadistas. Though often associated with the Portuguese sailors' longings for home from Northern African ports, the music feels far more European than Northern African.

But Ana Maura's fado on this wonderful album manages to capture the smoky sadness of the genre with a voice which is at once longingly husky and lightly spirited. Maura's contralto is not really a "thick" voice like some fadistas'; it is of a thinner, reedier timbre. The music has elements of the joy inherent in simple folk melodies, even while reflecting the saddest of harmonies. An extraordinary combination difficult to describe in words, the effect is aptly summed up in Publico's review as "an emotional work, skin-deep, one that makes you shiver."

There is a strong resonance with awe-inspiring, Cape Verdean music of Cesaria Evora, Cafe Atlanticothough again, Ana's voice is lighter. But both voices are "longing, so long," (this phrase being the title of a gorgeous, totally different Oregon chamber jazz piece fromRoots in the Sky].

All that said, what overwhelms me most on this album is the wonderful guitar and Portuguese guitar work of guitarist Jorge Fernando and Portuguese guitarist Custódio Castelo -- playing at once intricate, graceful and soulful; guitar music as beautiful as any I have heard. Period.

The idea of this album as mood or background music is an odd one. I confess, I myself have heard it while "otherwise occupied." And personally I encourage listening to all music anywhere and everywhere, foreground or background. But make no mistake: this music merits your full attention, in the foreground and without distraction. It will fascinate and thrill you down to your toes! ---J. Winokur, amazon.com
