Jason Mraz's first set of all-new material in nearly three years, WE SING. WE DANCE. WE STEAL THINGS. sees Mraz continuing to tread his own distinctive artistic path, melding a variegated musical tapestry with passionate, personal lyricism. Among the highlights are collaborations with British tunesmith James Morrison and singer/ songwriter Colbie Caillat. "I'm Yours," the album's first single, was chosen due to the undeniable fan response to the song. A demo version of "I'm Yours" originally appeared on a limited release bonus EP Mraz put out with his last album. Today the song is an online sensation, with hundreds of usergenerated videos from more than 25 different countries now appearing on YouTube. Jason will be hitting the road this April on the "Music, Magic & Make Peace Tour".

Since 2002’s jaunty Waiting for My Rocket to Come, Jason Mraz has developed into a more mature, well-rounded pop artist. We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things is his most multi-dimensional work yet, covering everything from groove-based material to ballads. While tracks such as "Make It Mine" and "Butterfly" refer back to the catchy style of previous albums, there are many other styles and textures on display here. His duet with Colbie Caillat, "Lucky," for example, explores his folkish, acoustic side, as does the compelling "Details in the Fabric," both of which are excellent songs. Mraz gets a little more experimental on "Coyotes," which toys with a clubby electronica and strangely seems to work, and on "The Dynamo of Volition" for which he employs a hectic, rapping-style of vocal over a typically contagious rhythm. His ballads, such as "Love For A Child", "If It Kills Me" and "Beautiful Mess" (these last two saved for the end) show a more sensitive side and even when his lyrics are occasionally clumsy, Mraz manages to make his point in an emotive way. If you have not yet been Mrazmerized by the folky-hip talent of the two-time Grammy Award winner, this live five-song extended play is like a sampler appetizer that should entice your musical appetite. For Mraz fans this is a must; a musical snack before the full meal of an album Mraz is slated to release early next year.

Life is Good will give anyone a quick view of the artist that is Mraz. Listeners get a piece of his activism in “Freedom Song.” He is covering Luc and The Lovingtons on this one. The New Orleans-based musician, and a Red Cross volunteer at the time, Luc Reynaud wrote the song in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Mraz brought the song to Ghana on his mission to bring awareness to child slavery with the group Free the Slaves. Mraz and group of former child slaves sang the song together during Mraz's trip to Africa. Mraz has maintained his fun side with track two, “San Disco Reggaefornia.” It is his invitation to dance “and leave your troubles at the door.” Even though this is a brand new acoustic-rap groove, the song has been a huge crowd pleaser during Mraz’s string of fall shows. “Up” is an exploration into love and relationships accompanied by references to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Mraz has an uncanny way of taking deep topics and making them light and sweet. The song speaks about the limitless possibilities of love with music that will make you want to gaze off in thought about your special someone. “What Mama Say” is a simple, fun tribute to moms. Listen to your mom. And treat your future baby mama right. Life is Good marks the third occasion “Coyotes” has been released. The song was released on the studio album We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. and on Jason Mraz’s Beautiful Mess: Live on Earth. On Life is Good the song has a new band to back it and a rested Mraz voice compared to the end of the 2009 tour when Beautiful Mess was recorded. Plus, this tune always allows Mraz to flex his musical muscles as he shreds operatic lyrics mid-song.

Underneath his tongue-twisting wordplay, Jason Mraz fancies himself a loverman -- and given that his greatest success came from the sticky sentiment of "I'm Yours," who can blame him for thinking this way? Nevertheless, he's never made a full-blown makeout record until Love Is a Four Letter Word, an album steeped in '70s soul. Mraz doesn't neglect his acoustic guitar nor does he abandon his showy verbal gymnastics, but apart from a cut or two -- including "I Won't Give Up," the album's first single -- they're buried underneath stacks of luxurious strings and thick, insistent grooves, touches that tie the record together with elegance. Mr. A-Z has hinted at soul before but he's never placed music over words, a shift of emphasis that delivers great dividends. He can still be a nasally, hyperactive twit, too eager to succumb to clever-clever puns and quips, but there's an acknowledgment that even if he can't change who he is -- witness the terribly titled "Fred D Fixer," an ode to a grandfather who lived by his hands, not his wits -- he can build upon this foundation. If all he adds is color and flair, not some serious depth, that winds up being enough: by making alterations and affecting his pose, Mraz pushes himself into new territory, creating music that's perilously close to sounding seductive. What holds Love Is a Four Letter Word from actually being seductive is that Mraz seems more lech than Lothario -- there's always a sense that he's around for nothing longer than a night. But, as Love Is a Four Letter Word plays, Mraz can convince you that his pleasures are a bit more than fleeting. CD/DVD set -- the concert runs two songs longer on the DVD -- is pretty simple, capturing a show Mraz gave at the Charter One Pavilion in Chicago in August 2009. Colbie Caillat shows up to duet on "Lucky," but that's really the only surprise here: Mraz is in total crowd-pleaser mode, running through hits and favorites, bending arrangements and improvising a little bit, but not enough to alter the feel or familiarity of the songs, creating a show that's a good time for fans, which is all that this needed to be, anyway. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic Review
