On Faith No More's major-label debut, Introduce Yourself, the Faith No More that you've grown to know and love finally rears it's ugly head (much more so than on their 1985 independent release We Care a Lot). All the ingredients are there, but like its predecessor there's one crucial item missing, super-vocalist Mike Patton. This would be original singer Chuck Mosley's last outing with the band, before he was ejected due to erratic and unpredictable behavior. Still, the album is consistent and interesting, with Mosley's out-of-tune vocals being an acquired taste to most. "The Crab Song" is one of their most underrated tracks, which packs quite a wallop when guitarist Jim Martin's heavily saturated guitar kicks in. The title track is an enjoyable and brief rant, and the loopy bass and irresistible melodicism of "Anne's Song" should have been a hit. There's also a slightly updated version of "We Care a Lot" included, and the resulting video gave the band their first taste of MTV success (but nothing compared to what they'd experience with their heavily rotated breakthrough "Epic"). Faith No More is dropping Sol Invictus , the band's first record since 1997's Album of the Year, and it's a pretty big deal.

In related news, keyboardist RoddyBottum said in a recent interview that Sol Invictus goes back to the band's roots. it's an interesting statement to make considering Mike Patton joined the group in 1988 and wasn't on the first two records. Not that anyone doubts Patton's ability to adapt vocally to any situation ever.

“I would say that it really does go back to out roots, and really gothic – it’s really sort of in the dark and there’s a lot of sombre tones on it. I get gut instincts from simple stripped down sounds, when we do that successfully, and for me there is a lot of those moments on the record. Like, not as dense as the place that we usually go and there’s a lot of places with a really simple instrumentation and pianos – there is a lot of pianos – and a lot of really, concise smart lyrics that can be heard and understood. And those sort of places on the record are the strongest for me.”

Bottum also reveals the real reason Faith No More made a new record- they were bored. Seriously.

“We got really bored with what we were doing and we also felt like there are a whole lot of people out there who look to us to be inspired and encouraged by what we do artistically. So to be doing old songs on a big stage with a lot of people watching over and over – it felt kind of cheap and easy and a little too safe of a place to be. That’s not who we are. We’ve always pushed buttons and we’ve always rubbed against the grain and we’ve always challenged things."

Bottum could have said they made the new record for basically any reason and we'd still be chomping at the bit to hear it much like we are right now. --- metalinjection.net

This platinum collection offering of Faith No More's finest moments finally does what other greatest-hits collections have failed to do for the band thus far: present a comprehensive overview to the band from start to finish, including some of their lesser known and weaker albums. Of course the big hits from MTV and radio airplay are presented right in a row in the beginning, and from that moment on it's a collection of fan favorites that fills out the disc, including two of their best cover versions, the Commodores' "Easy" and the Bee Gees' "I Started a Joke." For a long time I've been searching for a band with the ultimate vocals. A guy up front who really was The Real Thing. Who could release an Album of the Year. Who could act like a king for a day, but really was a fool for a lifetime. Who really cares a lot. And when all is said and done, and when his ashes were burnt upon the ground, his remains would fall down to earth like dust from the heavens. Angel Dust, in other words.

Now that vocalist I speak of is called Mike Patton. Few match his skill on the mic. From insane falsetto voices, to loud bass singing, to grunting, to rapping, to plain wackiness, he really is one of the most able vocalists ever to roam the earth. Of course, Air Raid Sirens or the haunting and crooning voice of Keenen, or even the divine goddess Tarja Turunen, all have superb aspects of their singing. But no one can do everything, except this guy.

And in the year 1992, he sung for a band called Faith No More, who had gotten an MTV hit with their single Epic. Now Faith No More was known for their disdain of MTV and commerciality. So, splitting their fanbase right in two, they created the masterpiece that would henceforth be known as Angel Dust. And it truly is an excellent album. I would vouch for it to be one of the best albums of the 90s, a classic of rock and metal alike. Of course Mike Patton has a huge part in the success of this record. His vocal antics please the listener and the producer alike. But the groovy bass lines, the guitar riffs, and the fantastic drums not to mention the idiosyncratic keyboards make this album an aural orgasm.

It is the opener, Land of Sunshine, that already sets the tone. The lyrics, sung in Mike Patton style, portray exactly what Faith No More is all about. Nonsensicality, bitterness against society, sarcasm, it's all in there. Not to mention the musical side of things, with an excellent guitar solo to boot, and the keyboards creating an awesome deep atmosphere to this song. The whole album could easily just be described by the word "idiosyncratic."

And the rest of the album continues in the same vein. It is really hard to single out a track as the best one, albeit the aformentioned Land Of Sunshine is an excellent example, the haunting RV, or Kindergarten, or Jizzlobber, Midlife Crisis, or any other song you wish to take out and play as an example of the brilliance of this album, all would tell you the same story despite all being different songs; this has Faith No More written all over it. It has to be your cup of tea, obviously; but if you liked any other work of Faith No More or comparable bands (who are far and between these days; little has ever achieved the greatness of this), you'll be blown away by this.

In fact, while reviewing this album, the best advice I can give when listening to this record is just put it on and see for yourself. It's an excellent ride from beginning to end, with all the trademark elements plus excellent musicianship this is one of the best albums ever released, no matter what your father, brother, best friend, or MTV may say. If you haven't got this in your collection and you're a fan of rock and metal, shame on you. It's a MUST for anyone who wishes to get into Faith No More, and it's a must for everyone who enjoys the metal genre as a whole. It's also a must if you enjoy just going against the grain just like these guys. Just check it out and you'll see what I mean; this album can't be put into words, it defies any law.

Compiled in preparation for Faith No More's 2009 reunion tour, Rhino slapped together The Very Best Definitive Ultimate Greatest Hits Collection, yet another Faith No More greatest-hits collection that doesn't quite hit the mark. This time, the material is divvied between two discs: a disc of their 18 best tracks and a second disc of B-sides and rarities. The main problem here is that the set doesn't seem aimed at any particular audience. The B-sides are targeted to hardcore fans who surely own the songs on the first disc already, and any newcomers will probably be scared away by the severity of the rarities. If you are indeed new to the Faith No More world, your best bet is to pick up the band's first two albums with Mike Patton, (The Real Thing and Angel Dust) for a starting point. For those newcomers looking for a loose chronological history of the group, with songs by the first vocalist Chuck Mosley and a spattering of covers (which are usually great), the Platinum Collection, This Is It: The Best of Faith No More, and Who Cares a Lot: Greatest Hits provide a slightly better overview at a more affordable price. --- Jason Lymangrover, allmusic.com
