Gaël Horellou - Born in1975 From the age of nine, he studied music at Caen Jazz Action then in the class Jazz of CNR directed by Richard Foy and received a diploma of final study in Tonic Solfa. He then studies at the Villeurbanne National School of Music. He performed with Normandy drummer, JB Culot: ‘Live a puzzle’ (Arvi 95). In 1994, he joined Mu’s Collective. With this formation, he wins the competition at Vienna’s Festival in 1995 and La Defense in 1996. He records two records, ‘Live au Crescent’ in 1995 and ‘Don Quichotte’ in 1996 with label Seventh Records distributed by Harmonia Mundi. He toured France with the group.

From 1997 to 1999, he toured in Spain, he recorded ‘Versus’ with David Sauzay and the Gael Horellou quintet (Fresh Sound New Talent) in Barcelona in 1999. In 1997, he trained with Philippe Garcia from Cosmik Connection. This project ‘electro-acoustic’ won the Printemps de Bourges competition in 2000: category electronic music. Two records: ‘Electro Jazz Quartet’ in 2000 (Plein gaz Prod) and ‘II’ in 2002 (Cosmic Prod).

Performs several dates in France, the Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Canada (International Montreal Festival). He participates in sextet of Laurent de Wilde and records with him ‘Time for Change’ (Warner Jazz 2000) and ‘Stories’ (Warner Jazz 2003). Tours in France and foreign countries from 2000 to 2001 and played in the quintet of Luigi Trussardi ‘Introspection’ (Elabeth 2001). In 2001 and 2002, he played in a trio with Michel Benita and Philippe Garcia. He records with numerous Drum&Bass projects: VHT, DJ Volta… In 2003 and 2004, he lead quartet ‘Non Harmonix’. --- simonoviez.com

 

Originaire de Basse-Normandie, Gaël Horellou (né en 1975) accomplit ses études musicales au Caen Jazz Action dès l'âge de neuf ans. Attiré par le saxophone, il poursuit son apprentissage au Centre (CNR). Le jeune musicien diplômé de la classe de solfège termine son cursus à l'École Nationale de Musique de Villeurbanne et se lance sur scène avec le batteur Jean-Baptiste Culot. De la collaboration découle l'album Live A Puzzle sorti chez Arvi en 1995.

En 1994, Gaël Horellou rejoint le Collectif Mu et remporte avec elle les concours des festivals Jazz à Vienne et celui de La Défense (Hauts-de-Seine). Il y rencontre le compositeur et programmeur Philippe Garcia avec lequel il collaborera après la séparation en 1997. En 1995 sort un Live Au Crescent, suivi de Don Quichotte (Seventh Records, 1996) et d'une tournée. Après l'aventure Mu, Horellou embraie sur la formation d'un quintette et d'une tournée espagnole conclue par l'enregistrement de l'album Versus avec David Sauzay (Fresh Sound New Talent, 1999).

En 2000, les retrouvailles entre Gaël Horellou et Philippe Garcia débouchent sur le projet électro-acoustique (ou electro jazz) Cosmic Connection ; la formation rangée dans la catégorie « musiques électroniques » remporte le concours du Printemps de Bourges et enregistre les albums Electro Jazz Quartet (2000) et Cosmic Connection II (2001). Un troisième volume, Grand Panache, sort en 2006. Après une tournée à travers l'Europe, Gaël Horellou se joint au sextette de Laurent de Wilde pour Time For Change (2000) et Stories (2003). Le saxophoniste apporte également sa contribution au quintette de Luigi Trussardi, au trio electro UHT, et forme un trio éphémère avec Philippe Garcia et Michel Benita.

En 2003, le groupe NHX formé avec Yoan Serra distille un album homonyme (suivi d'un second volet en 2008). En formule electro sous le pseudonyme Dual Snake, il enregistre un Live sorti en 2004 puis signe Dual Snake 02 (2005). Dans la foulée, Gaël Horellou réunit ses connaissances sur le projet electro jazz Explorations (2006) où interviennent Laurent de Wilde, Yoan Serra, François Gallix, Flavio Boltro et Antoine Paganotti. L'année 2008 voit la sortie de Live 2008 en trio et de l'enregistrement du live Pour La Terre avec Jean-Sébastien Simonoviez et François Gallix. En 2010, après les albums Travels (studio) et Segment (live) pour Petit Label, Gaël Horellou étrenne une nouvelle formation présente sur l'album Sextet Live ! sorti l'année suivante. ---Loïc Picaud, music-story.com
