Cleveland Orchestra
George Szell – conductor

(CBS Masterworks – Great Performances 66)

This is a titanic performance of the fieriest of Brahms concertos that has long been a favourite of mine. Serkin was a tremendously exciting pianist and here he is caught on a good day in full command of his considerable powers. This is a very large scale performance, fiery rather than grand, which it should be, as this is a young man's concerto. Szell accompanies wonderfully, challenging his soloist to greater and greater intensity. --- Mr Swallow (UK), amazon.com
