Happy People came out the same year as Cannonball Adderley Quintet & Orchestra, but couldn’t have been more different in styles. While the latter was a mix of Free Jazz, Bop and Soul, Happy People was inspired by a trip Cannonball made to Brazil. The line-up was the usual with Walter Booker on bass, with Chuck Rainey on one cut, Roy McCurdy on drums, George Duke on keys and brother Nat on cornet. Airto Moreira, King Errison and others played percussion and Flora Purim, Airto and Olga James provided vocals. As usual, David Axelrod did production. Two of the four cuts on the record, Happy People and Ela, are Brazilian, while the others, Maria Tres Filhos and Savior light and funky Jazz pieces. All of the songs were recorded live. ---soulstrut.com
