I'm not sure how to review this CD without telling a story.

My family and I were traveling in Ireland this summer when we pulled off the road in County Kildare to visit a local fair. I'd finally gotten secure enough driving on the wrong side of the road to be longing for some music. Not any music, but Irish music. Heck after all I was in Ireland. So I wandered into a very small music store where the locals were trying out Irish whistles. In the corner there was a stack of CDs of Irish artists. I had heard of the Dubliners and figured that it was a good place to start with Irish music.

There were two Dubliner CDs in the bin. I inquired of the shop keep which of the two was better; he replied it depended on which of the traditional songs I liked better. Now not knowing any Irish music I decided on "Seven Drunken Nights". Kinda a catchy title, huh?

Well, on the drive out to the Connemara this was in the Focus CD player. About sixty miles later my kids and I were singing along. I'm a great believer that all road trips need a sound track. Five months later I still listen to this CD (and my kids still sing Irish drinking songs); sometimes because I think of Ireland and sometimes because the music is just plain great. Highly recommend to be committed to memory is "Whisky in the Jar", "Seven Drunken Nights" and "The Sick Note". Is this the best Dubliner's CD? Who knows? But this one is great even so...

This CD makes me misty eyed even while I'm chuckling about the lyrics. You know I'm not Irish, but Ireland feels like home and these songs sound like I've heard them all my life (possibly in another life?). Highly recommend driving in Ireland or not. ---L. Audell, amazon.com
