Beset by the conviction that the world was going to end this year, this French nu-prog duo set about recording a kind of epitaph. The "new world rituals" of the title are voodoo rites – as horror fans, percussionist Cosmic Neman and keyboardist Etienne Jaumet have a particular interest in the subject – but the link between voodoo and the rambling, upbeat instrumentals here isn't easy to divine. What does come across is their obsession with sci-fi: the analogue squeals that shatter The Wisdom of Stones are pure B-movie, and Rocket Number 9 is punctuated by the doomy chant "Rocket number nine take off for the planet Venus", as if the song has been commandeered by robots. The album continues in this camp, cinematic vein, with diversions into Krautrocky dissonance on L'Age d'Or and hallucinatory jazz on Black Paradise. Much of its charm is its similarity to 1950s space-age pop, which experimented with cutting-edge editing techniques – the same sense of playful curiosity keeps things fresh here. ---Caroline Sullivan, theguardian.com
