First of all, the music is superb (if you like old Christian music). Second of all, the sound quality is as good as it gets for this type of music (1920-era 78s mastered to CD) (Yazoo does a great job as always removing most unwanted noise) My only complaint is the packaging: while I appreciate the quotations from some of the songs, I was hoping for more information about the date of the recordings. Lets face it, one thing we're paying for in a recording like this is the rarity of the music - and it would be nice to know some more about the artists. I give the music and recording five stars but the packaging three stars. --- Tweeedly Eeeedly "blahblahblah" (Fremont, CA United States)

Yazoo has released yet another wonderful compilation chock full of recordings that are essential for roots music fans. The Half Ain't Never Been Told, Vol. 2 chronicles American rural religious music of the 1920s and 1930s. The moving, heartfelt praise and prayers included here range from a cappella choirs to solo artists with musical accompaniment to gospel groups. Unusually, the collection doesn't separate music from black and white rural music traditions, mixing in bluegrass, prewar gospel blues, sacred harp singing, spirituals, and more. With this variety of styles equally dispersed between two volumes, if you want one, you will want them both. Volume 2 contains songs by Phillips, Blind Willie Johnson, Charlie Patton, Blind Joe Taggart, the Kentucky Ramblers, and many groups. As is always the case with compilations of such early and rare recordings, the sound quality varies widely, with a hiss ranging from barely noticeable to hissing at the same volume as any of the instruments. Nonetheless, this compilation makes an important addition to the library of roots music fans who can overlook sound quality inconveniences for the recordings' historical importance. ---Joslyn Layne, allmusic.com
